We rented a 3 bedroom, ocean view room. It was sooo beautiful! There was a fabulous view!!! Granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances. There was also a beautiful 8 seat dark wood dining table that everyone in our group could fit at. 6 of us stayed in this room. My brothers decided they wanted to sleep in the living room because the rooms were so cold. Which was fine with us because it allowed two other people to have their own room. (Hint - the air conditioning in the middle room is connected to the last room. If you turn that off, you will turn the middle room off.) The living room included a chair, a pull out bed and a full size couch.

If I had to point out a couple things, I was able to find them (although they were very small.) 1. I don't think any of the vents are cleaned (please clean them). 2. The toilet paper roll holder in the main bathroom was super crooked, 3. One of the sinks in the main bathroom was full of dirty water when we checked in. 4. There was at least two small holes that I noticed were calked but weren't painted. 5. On the website, it showed BBQ grills on the patio of this room but there wasn't one…which sucked for our Super Bowl party. 6. The blankets were not enough. They should add a layer of warmth in each room. I am always super hot and those rooms/blankets were really cold. If they added at least 3 of the thin down comforters in the closet that would have been perfect (one for each room).

In the grand scheme of things these things were miniscule. I am gladly giving this property 5 stars because I still consider this property perfect!! Everything else was beautiful the rooms, the complementary items they leave for you on the dining room tables (dish soap, dish towels, washing detergent, dishwasher detergent, a sponge & a dish cloth), the bathrooms, the toiletries (All Aveda),

I recommend Honua Kai for anyone staying on the Maui West Coast. I don't know how any hotel could top it.

Room Tip: Choose an ocean view room! The hallways are super long!! So if your party has more than one room, ask to be near each other. They put our two rooms on the same floor but they were unbearably far from each other. I didn't even get to see what the other room looked like.

We had a 3 bedroom ocean view room. Gorgeous room, gorgeous view. Every bedroom had its own ensuite/bathroom. Spacious balconies. Amazing pool area and kids pool. Great friendly staff.

The only things I'd change is better room service menu, and location a little closer to the whalers village. Overall very pleased with our stay at Honua Kai. Hope to be back.

My husband, brother, and sister-in-law stayed in Konea tower #813 for two weeks. We rented through VRBO (Kaanapli Beach Properties handled everything), not the resort itself. Overall, we thought it was a very nice resort with the amenities we expected. Here's a summary of our experience:
Positives:
+ Our unit had an absolutely fantastic ocean view. We spent a lot of time on the lanai (it's a corner unit so the lanai was very large) watching the whales and enjoying the beautiful blue ocean.
+ The owners supplied chairs, umbrellas, beach towels and other beach items.
+ Check-in was efficient. The agent met us in the lobby and escorted us to our room, and explained things such as the washer/drier and AC.
+ The resort was very quiet at night; even though we kept the lanai doors open we heard very little noise from other guests.
+ The pool area is well-designed and much nicer-looking than some of the other nearby hotels.
* The fitness center is very nice, and the resort also offers fitness classes for a fee.
+ The sofa bed was comfortable.
+ The beachwalk along all of the Kaanapali Beach resorts is very nice and a great place to walk in the morning or evening
+ It was nice having a Duke's restaurant right in the resort. We ate there a few times and enjoyed the food and the setting.
+ There's a good supermarket (Times) right across the street.
Negatives:
- The kitchen is difficult to use for any serious meal preparation. There is also not enough cabinet space to store non-perishable groceries.
- The unit needs some upkeep: carpet and living room furniture are in need of steam cleaning, one of the toilets has a leak (which we reported but it wasn't fixed), and the AC wasn't working properly.
- As other reviewers have mentioned, the pool furniture is really uncomfortable. The lounge chairs in the pool area are the worst design I've ever seen and were impossible to sit in comfortably without using towels to pad them.
- It would be great if the bedroom windows could be opened slightly to allow for cross-ventliation. We kept the glass lanai doors open all night (weather was cool) but none of that air seemed to make its way into the bedrooms even though we kept the doors open.

Room Tip: If you can get a corner unit on an upper floor, you'll have a fantastic view of the ocean.

My wife took our 2.5 and 7 month old in February. We booked a 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath, Ocean View Room. When we first walked in the balcony faced the adjacent wing of the other side of the building so we weren't greeted with an ocean view. When we stepped towards the balcony we were able to see the gorgeous view of the ocean (obviously angled given the design of most ocean front hotels). I was worried that the view would be too far to really see the migrating whales since this is always a highlight when visiting Maui this time of year. We were not disappointed. Not only were we close enough to the water to enjoy the sights, there wasn't a second you would look at the ocean and not see a blow hole or breaching humpack. Just fantastic! The room was very large and ample enough space for our family of 4. We kept saying that another couple/family could easily accommodate the space as well (this was the only ocean view available to us during our timeframe so we booked it). The furnishings were excellent and my wife and I could not stop talking about how comfortable the mattresses were. We received daily packs of dishwashwer and laundry detergent which was super convenient. The room has a large interior and balcony table to accommodate a large number of people. Every day we enjoyed our meals on the patio enjoying the view. The pools were great as well. Our 2.5 year old did not want to come out of the 1 foot toddler pool and Mom loved the adjacent hot tub. Ate at Dukes one evening and made the mistake of taking a table on the patio to avoid the wait. We had to take our food to go because the wind was blowing our salad leaves off of our plates. Overall fantastic resort and highly recommend!

We stayed here in September 2012. The rooms were extremely well kept and spacious, as were the grounds and pools of the property. The supermarket is right next door so very convenient to stock up on arrival - we had breakfast on our terrace and the occasional lunch, and we saw many people having dinner on an evening. You will need to have a car to drive to most other restaurants, and the sites but it is definitely worth it. It was windier than further down the coast, but in September it was really still just a breeze, which i appreciated on warmer days and especially at night (note - bring a light cardigan for the evenings).

Room Tip: An ocean view is definitely worth it as you get both the sunrish and sunset from most rooms. The mountain has a cloud hanging over it most of the time so it not as pretty.
