This is a great place. The resort is not to big so you don´t feel crowded and service is on a personal level. It has a great pool area and the beach in front of the hotel is brilliant. The rooms are very spacious, with large balconies, modern and clean. I absolutely look forward to returning here. Close by is the very nice little town of Lahaina where you have a good selections of restaurants and a very special charm.

After reading many Tripadvisor reviews we booked a two bedroom condo through VRBO we got a really good deal as it was September and low season. We booked a mountain view,we now wish we would have had a ocean view but it was so windy the whole time, I dont think we would be able to sit on the balcony more than we did. We did our Safeway and Coscto shop first and off we drove int he rental car. Its about 45min drive from the airport. The resort is beautiful. Lush ground, grand open air lobby. Our condo was perfect to masters with own bathroom. Beautiful modern kitchen with stainless steel applicances and granite. The suite cam with everything you could need more. Beach chairs, coolers, floats for the ocean. Nice pools.lots for families and children to do. It was great to have a Duke's Canoe Club restaurant on site, they have great food and a great happy hours everyday. You cannot go wrong with this resort!

This is our second trip and we got to stay in a better ocean view room. We rented from a vacation rental management property and it was somewhat worth it. The resort offers some additional amenities which may be convenient to you. The pools are great for the kids, adults can swim in the beach. There is times market across the street and you can get everything. We never had to go to Costco or Safeway and it was very convenient. Though the December weather was not so great we had a good time in the resort.

Room Tip: All the odd units are inside view and have better oceanic view and even units are outside view.

From the moment we arrived I was impressed with the Honua Kai! We had a packed rental car with our luggage and grocery stop at Costco on the way but the staff un packed it all for us and brought all up to the room. The room was just amazing, perfect for our family of four. We had a two bedroom unit and it had LOTS of space - this living room is larger than our one at home! We often ate supper outside on the deck and used the BBQ area as well. There are lots of choices of pools here and my kids loved the lazy river pool. Some days we did not even leave the property and just stayed by the pool! The pool service was very good also. This resort is close to Black Rock (you can see it from the beach) and Whalers village. You could easily walk there and maybe take a shuttle back if you dont want to walk back. A beautiful place, friendly staff and the rooms are top notch! We will be sure to come back!

Room Tip: Our room on the ocean side was so quiet! Only the second floor also but we never heard anything fro...

We have stayed at the Honua Kai Hokulani twice. Last year we were in 349 which was a 2 bedroom ocean view. It was just fantastic. Great view overlooking green area and pool. This time we stayed in 342 on the shady side. It was very windy while we were there and not a side you would actually lay out on. However the room was a large one bedroom with a good size den. Tv in den, frontroom and bedroom. Suitable for small family only thing just one bathroom.
We love the Honua Kai. I definetly prefer the sunny side but my fault for booking so late at a busey time. The front desk staff and Jerome were incredible. And.... a very big thanks to the great cleaning staff. We had a great gal Bituanna who was delightful The fish and Chips at Dukes is fantastic and so are their burgers. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Don't forget the Deli Aina in the Hokulani building. Great people and great selection for when you first arrive. Good Food and coffee as well. There are just the two of us we don't bother stopping at Costco. There is a Walmart which has a good food and drink selection and prices are resaonable. In Lahina just a 10 minute drive away you have Food Land across the Street from the Lahina Cannery which is great. Across on the opposite corner you have Walgreens which has a good selection of snack food at great prices as well.
Lahina Cannery mall you have Safeway, Longs Drugs store, Restaurants and shops till you drop.
Oh by the way... its expensive but if you get a chance don't miss out on going to Mama's Fish House. Take your camera view is spectacular

Room Tip: We stayed in room 342 HH (Hokulan it is situated between the two buildings facing west. Total Shade...

Our family recently enjoyed a 10 day stay at this property. Many of the units on the property are owned individually (however, it is is evident that many units remain unsold as the resorts real estate division continues to market the remaining units). We rented our unit through VRBO from an individual based in California and observed one of the potential downsides of renting an individually owned, self managed unit. Our flight from the mainland was delayed significantly; thus, we arrived at the property quite late that night. There was another family who had been on the same flight checking in ahead of us. Evidently, they had also rented from an individual owner who was supposed to have met them at the hotel to give them access to the unit. However, because this family was checking in much later than the original plan, the person they were to meet had gone home. The hotel's front desk did not have access to the unit in question and for a time, it appeared that this unfortunate family was out of luck. The mother had to burst into tears before the front desk contacted the hotel's security department (who did have a master key for every unit in the building) and things were eventually sorted out. Although we will continue to rent through VRBO, the poor family's situation was a cautionary example.

As to the property itself, because it is fairly new, the units and the common areas are in a good state. Although maintenance seems reasonable (more than once, we saw an employee in the elevator cleaning the elevator floor tiles), the hotel is obviously quite popular with families with children so there is evidence of wear already showing through in minor areas and I suspect that the property will not be "gently used" over time.

Each unit has a full kitchen and is finished to current 4 star standards (carpet and porcelain/ceramic tile, granite counter tops, Bosch stainless steel appliances, painted floor and ceiling mouldings) and is a step down from some other properties we have stayed at in Hawaii (most notably the Beach Villas in Ko Olina which were finished to a higher standard -- Wolf/SubZero appliances, natural stone floor tiles, stained wood floor and ceiling mouldings etc).

Because our unit faced inland, our view/outlook was unremarkable. Obviously an ocean facing unit would have had far superior views (which we had a peek at when some of the other unit doors were left open during the housekeeping service). The property has two pools -- one conventional pool and another designed for children which was generally shallower and had a waterslide. Our two sons (ages 5 & 7) enjoyed the kids pool and slide immensely. The beach area was certainly busy (given the time of year) but did not feel overrun. We didn't come across good snorkeling -- perhaps we didn't swim in the right areas (reading other reviews, it appears there is good snorkeling near by).

There is a Duke's restaurant and a Time's grocery store in the immediately vicinity of the resort. So meals are convenient (if not inexpensive).

Many people rave about the food in Maui. Perhaps we are somewhat jaded (coming from Vancouver and having travelled fairly extensively throughout Europe & Asia), but my impression of the food in Maui has not changed since my first trip more than a decade ago. My view of the food and the dining experiences that are available is that although the ambiance of many restaurants is quite nice, and the food is generally competently prepared, menus often lack true diversity and after a while, variations of macadamia nut encrusted mahi mahi become quite unappealing!

Booking our trip through AAA, we were ASSURED that this resort was really really great. Maybe when it first opened??

Bottom line: don't stay here.

--It was lounge chair wars (the staff just chuckled at all of the people wandering around looking at all of the empty lounges being 'saved' by a towel for hours on end--it was amusing to them)
--the coral in the water cuts up your feet unless you purchase & wear water shoes or booties
--the washer had mold in it
--the DVD player didn't work
--the toilet plugged up
--not even SALT nor PEPPER provided in the 'gourmet kitchen'(c'mon-really??)
--we all ended up with stiff necks due to the lumpy pillows
--on the 3rd floor, almost every wall had been patched due to people hitting them with luggage...but the patches were beige and the walls were a completely different color. It was as if Maintenance went on vacation & forgot to finish the job??
--they really should remove the 'SPA' part...their literature all stated: 'Spa opening January 2013'...when we checked out-staff said...'ummmm--maybe not until December, if at all.'
--very DANGEROUS: slippery tile on the lanais when it got wet with the rain--we had to walk on beach towels, so that we wouldn't slip and fall
--it ISN'T a 'lazy river'---there is NO RIVER...it is a horseshoe-shaped pool
--trash remained near the lounges day after day until we finally picked it up.
--many many units are still unsold--after 4 years--that alone should be a red flag
--and yes, it does smell due to the sewage plant being across the street...as with most things-it becomes the 'norm' and you don't notice it after 2 or 3 days.

For the amount of $$$$$ we paid, we were assured that we would 'just love it.' As seasoned Maui visitors who have stayed in both big & small resorts, this was by far: THE WORST EVER.
