“Great location, gorgeous views, and great time”
Reviewed May 4, 2014

Stayed 4 nights, had an awesome room in building 6, Mona Hale, 3rd floor. Breathtaking views, best view I think Ive ever had from a hotel room ever actually. Like a private whale movie out your patio. Lots of walking to get to our room, which we liked, exercise is fundamental.

We ate at other places for variety really, no other reason. The pool was ice cold, the hot tub boiling hot, but we were in the sea most of the time anyway, so no real big deal there, but does take some points off overall.

Awesome location. Check out the real Black Rock jump (east side of building 6 by the parking lot). Just walk out onto the black rock, and the most beautiful jump into the ocean all to yourself. Much higher than the popular jump everyone else knows about, but who wants to be like everyone else? Swim to the right when you land, and then you can hike back up the rocks.

Cheers

At check-in, we were told there was a request for a double AND a king on our one room reservation?? We requested a king room at booking, in January but king not available for tonight but they could move us to a king tomorrow. Well, I'm in my double bed and I find that the sheets are riddled with holes!! I'm not talking one or two..,serious holes in both the tom and bottom sheet. Not the type of linens I would expect from a Sheraton Resort! Can they not afford new sheets?? We're here for 5 more nights. They have time to turn things around...let's hope they do! Oh how I miss the JW Marriott we stayed at on Oahu!!!

This hotel is set in a beautiful location next to, and on top of, Black Rock. Even if you're not staying in one of the fancier buildings atop Black Rock, be sure to head up to one of them to enjoy the view.

The room I stayed in had a nice view and was spacious enough. The bathroom upgrade in my room was only partial, with a more recently done sink area, but an out-of-place bath that looked like it dated back to the 1970s or 1980s.

Considering how huge the Sheraton complex is, the hotel check-in is strangely small. I arrived at an off hour and still waited 15 minutes to check in.

I was surprised when I overheard a conversation at the front desk. Someone was asking about the Kama'aina discount for the breakfast buffet. The desk clerk, Irene, answered in a rather gruff, loud voice, "You don't qualify for any discount because you booked your room through Priceline" Her facial expression and body language conveyed a condescending attitude toward the somewhat embarrassed guest. Out of curiosity I later asked at the buffet if that was true and they told me (as I had expected) that the Kama'aina discount had nothing to do with how much one was paying for a room.

Speaking of the buffet, the check-in for it is a little unclear. One is tempted to walk right into the restaurant to be seated, but in fact one must check in first at a counter outside the restaurant. I saw more than a few people try to enter first, only to be turned away. If the confusion is so common, why isn't the check-in process indicated in a clearer way? I was told I would be seated in 5 minutes, but in fact it took over 15. To avoid guest frustration, it would be better to say 20 if it's realistically going to take 15.

Generally I found the service here to be somewhat lacking, with a certain lack of cheerfulness and "aloha". A well-trained staff will put away their personal grudges, troubles, contempt for guests habits or perceived (better) financial situation, and bend over backwards to make people feel welcome and happy.

I WAS very happy with the somewhat older woman at the counter outside, where the cars pull up near the front desk. She seemed genuinely happy to see people, and intent on sharing the aloha spirit with everyone. I felt she ought to be pressed into service as a trainer for other staff. With a better service ethic, this hotel will regain some of the panache it seems to have lost since its heyday.

This is exactly the type of resort that I envisioned when thinking of a Hawaiian resort! Beautiful winding pool, soft sand in a calm clear bay. We booked an oceanfront standard king room but they didn't have any king rooms when we arrived so we were upgraded to building 6 as we are SPG. The view was absolutely amazing and we enjoyed the sunset from our very private balcony every night. Unfortunately we had to sleep in 2 double beds as a trade off. I do think that we would have been very disappointed if were not upgraded as the oceanfront rooms otherwise were quite a distance from the beach and overlooked the pool area. Also, we noticed that other buildings really required renovation as the walls were peeling and the carpet was worn and coming up from the floor. We didn't mind the extra walking to get everywhere from our building but it is a long trek.
The $30 resort fee includes almost nothing...parking and local calls should be included in a $400 per night room. Why not include 2 free chair rentals on the beach with the sat as 12.50 for a chair for one day until 5pm is too expensive. The pool should be open past 8pm so that guests can enjoy a swim after dinner or a long day on the road to Hana. And I should be able to get towels after 5pm, and more than 1 at a time. As other reviewers stated, the restaurants and bars were very expensive...especially the drinks in tiny plastic cups for $11. We walked to the whalers village every evening for dinner and found good happy hours too.
Overall, I would come back here but only if I knew that I would be in an upgraded room. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the resort was beautiful.

This hotel was over-priced. Rooms were outdated and grungy, and the resort only had one hot-tub which packed the entire time. Lahaina is a great area though, and Cliff Rock was great for snorkeling. We saw a bunch of sea turtles; however, on the weekend local boys were all over the rock screaming at the guests and spraying water in everyone's snorkel.

We stayed in a deluxe ocean view in building 4. It was a perfect location! We had a room in building 6 at first but it is a long way and three elevators from anything. We loved the hotel, had great service. Great snorkeling right outside with sea turtles! We would definitely stay here again.

Checking out today and going to stay at the Westin villas.

Pros
- Beautiful grounds
-Great beach
-Great location. Easy walk to Whaler's Village. Saved money on lunches by just walking to Whaler's village and grabbing a few slices of pizza
- Pool is beautiful to look at
- Plenty of lounge chairs
- Got upgraded to a suite even though the resort was at full

Cons
- POOL NOT HEATED. IT WAS FREEZING COLD! Only would see about 2 people in at a time. I love going in the pool on vacation and wasn't able to use the it. This is a deal breaker for me and wouldn't return for this reason alone

I have stayed at many resorts in Maui, my favorite is still the Westin villas. (not the Westin hotel but the villas)
