As a return customer, I found it the hotel to almost as great as it was the first time for me which was about 5 years ago. Can't beat the location on Kaanappali beach right next to the best snorkeling area (Black Rock) that I have found in Maui. We actually swam with turtles! huge ones... They hang out there and swim really close to the shore right along with all the people- very cool experience. A ton of colorful fish are right there as well. Probably 1 of the best beaches I have been to, with the clear water and huge mounds of soft sand. Just beautiful! The resort itself is still very nice. Although a little dated, it was clean and had most everything we needed. I do miss the on site laundry facility that they use to have which was really convenient, especially for a family. The food was good but as to be expected, pretty expensive. The activities were somewhat lacking and the TV selections pretty limited. No movies are offered which was kind of a bummer since there wasn't a whole lot to do at night. We were able to walk up/down the beachfront walk that leads to the other hotels and Whalers Village, which is a smaller open air mall with restaurants. Other than that, there is Lahaina close by for nighttime entertainment. We also invested some $$$ on a snorkel trip to Lanaii, which I somewhat regret because there was better snorkeling right at the hotel- but atleast I can add that to my list of traveled places. All in all, a very nice family resort that for us will remain a favorite.

Room Tip: was able to upgrade the room for $30 a night to an ocean view- definitely worth it. Also, go see th...

We just came back from spending 6 days of our 9 day honeymoon at the Sheraton Maui. This hotel is nothing short of 5-stars, first-class. We were upgraded to a deluxe ocean-view room due to capacity, so we may have been a bit spoiled, but honestly, the grounds are just beautiful, and the views are spectacular from any and every area of the hotel. Our room was clean, modern and well decorated. The view from our balcony was nothing but ocean, with the quiet island of Molokai off in the distance. It felt very isolated and relaxing. My only complaint with our room location was that it was quite a haul to get to the pool or lobby, with 4 separate elevator rides! However, there was a private parking lot for our building, just 1 short elevator ride away.
There was never any shortage of chairs at the pool, and no shortage of beach space either. There is absolutely no need to rush down in the morning, which is so nice when you are on vacation! Poolside drinks and food are very expensive, and you are not allowed to bring your own down from your room. The poolside bars do offer happy hour specials though.
We were a bit disappointed how late things open up around the pool, and how early they shut down. We had fallen in love with Mai Tais during our stay in Honolulu, and were excited to check out the poolside Mai Tai bar after we checked in. However they had already closed for the evening, at 5:00 pm! Overall things shut down much earlier in Maui though, as compared to Honolulu. That was a bit of an adjustment for us!
The Whaler's Village is just a short beachside walk away (there is a pathway), and there is quite a bit to do there at nighttime. The Sheraton also provides a free shuttle to Lahaina, that runs until 10:00 at night, so we took advantage of that a few nights, there are several "hip" bars, restaurants & shops worth checking out down there.
Overall, we really truly enjoyed our stay at the Sheraton Maui. It far exceeded our expecations, and was the perfect setting for our perfect honeymoon!

Room Tip: Splurge for ocean view! It's well worth it.

We stayed in the Sheraton Maui on our honeymoon in January 2010. It was our first time to Hawaii and in our taxi on the way to the hotel (about 40 mins by taxi) we were greeted by the most amazing sunset. It was a sign of things to come!

We arrived at the Sheraton just after sunset - a perfect time to arrive at this hotel. It was lit up with the warm inviting light of the tiki lamps and we were greeted on arrival with garlands of flowers. The hotel upgraded us to an Ocean Front room (we had booked ocean view). Our room was beautiful with stunning views form the balcony of the Black Rock, the sea and the lagoon pools and bar.

The hotel's facilities are beautiful, and this hotel is very plush and exceptionally clean. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. It is nice and quiet - the bars do close early at 11:00, so if you want a drink later than this you have to head to Lahaina. Lahaina is about a 15 minute ride away, but there is a shuttle bus which is free which runs hourly. We used this a number of times, but a taxi is only around $10-15. The upside of the bars shutting early is that it is very quiet and peaceful at night.

There were some families in this hotel but there was a nice balance. I would say it suits couples and families and neither intrude on the other (and I don't normally like hotels where there are children!)

The restaurants in the hotel are good. There is a nice range of food and it is all done well. I have to say it is not exceptional though and it is on the pricey side. Especially Tepanyaki Dan's, which is very expensive and feels like it is all over very quickly! However, this is Hawaii - it's not cheap anywhere!!!

The beach is beautiful and the Black Rock is perfect for snorkelling. Word of warning though - sometimes the waves get very powerful we had an "incident" on the last day of our stay, culminating in my husband being tossed by a wave and breaking his hip. We thought that my husband had been very unlucky until we were told by a local doctor that the beach is well known for accidents due to the shelving sand. Do not let this put you off though - most of the time the waves were not that big, and sometimes it was very calm. Just have a healthy respect for the sea when the waves get big (there may have been an element of over-confidence in my husband's case ;-))

Anyway - the hotel staff were amazing and really supported us as my husband was in hospital for a week and then he had to recuperate for a few days at the hotel before we could go home. The hotel was near capacity but they found us a room with disabled facilities and really looked after us for our unplanned extended stay. They also sent us a card and a big bag of goodies to cheer us up.

All in all a very memorable honeymoon, but for the right reasons. The Sheraton played a pivotal part in making our experience of Maui so wonderful and in softening the blow of the unfortunate incident at the end of the trip.

Room Tip: Rooms on the other side of the Black rock are quieter, but we liked being able to see out onto the l...

We inhabited the Sheraton Maui for four glorious nights and 5 days in mid-September for our 25th wedding anniversary celebration. We had stayed at neighboring hotels before and endured the long, arduous hike to snorkel at Black Rock, but we had never actually stayed at the Sheraton. Our ocean front room on the second floor was simply perfect. The view over the pool area to the beach, with the island of Lanai across the channel was spectacular. The location, just a few steps away from the pool, restaurants and lobby, offered the ultimate in convenience, as we struggled each day to perform very large quantities of nothing. The room, amenities, staff, and activities of the resort all exceeded our expectations.
Valet parking is included in the first night stay. After that, for $5.12 extra you can continue the valet service. Our aging legs advised us to embrace this small sacrifice to avoid future pain and suffering, so we happily obliged.
The pool was an enjoyable adventure and we were able to find shade under the umbrellas and palm trees every day, even the time we didn’t arrive until almost noon (1 lonely palm tree was nicely waiting for our gratification). Of course, as the day progressed, the chairs had to be migrated opposite to the movement of the sun to maintain a seamless canopy over all body parts.
If you are celebrating a significant event (or insignificant event for that matter), order a drink in a whole pineapple. In addition to the fantasy appearance and savory taste of the drink, it is certain to elicit comments and conversations from other hotel guests. Order it early in the day, as a “whole” pineapple is ironically a scarce commodity in a Hawaiian resort … the honeymooners next to us got the last ones in existence on our first pool visit.
Unfortunately, the snorkeling at Black Rock was not nearly as good as we had remembered 10-15 years ago. As I recall there was a vendor selling little bags of fish food to snorkelers that may have contributed (you really think?) to the abundance of fish at that time. However, there were still sufficient turtles, fish and coral to make the effort worthwhile (well, aside from the leg cramps that we both enjoyed in the water and later at night).
As with most upper end Hawaiian resorts, the restaurants were very good, but outrageously priced. We did the $29 breakfast buffet a couple of days and then drove down to Cane and Taro at Whalers Village for a more reasonable breakfast price tag the other days. Yes, Whaler’s Village is just a short 5-10 minute walk along the beach. In fact, the concierge at the pool gave us a very perplexed look when we booked a UFO Parasail excursion and then refused to accept his suggestion that we walk to Whaler’s Village for the lift off. However, we didn’t rent the red Mustang convertible to let it sit in the parking lot. Furthermore, I defer again to the almighty ruler of the body, the cramping legs, which again demanded our obedience.
Thank you Sheraton Maui for the wonderful memories!

We've stayed at this Sheraton for two years in a row, both times in building #6, or Moana. To us, having that view makes a huge difference in our enjoyment of this hotel. The rooms are plenty nice, not extravagant though. Bathrooms are spacious. I think there might be other areas of the hotel that would feel more crowded at peak times of the year.

I was a little disappointed that our valet forgot the lei greeting, but no big deal. The check-in process went smoothly and quickly, and the lobby has such amazing views and fresh air that you hardly notice the time passing. Maybe it's the euphoria of arriving in Maui and hearing Hawaiian music playing that makes it special!

We like building #6 also because you can self park through a gate using your room key, and not have to worry about tipping the valet every time you need your car. This is important to us because we stay on the go, sight seeing, hiking, dining out, and exploring.

We usually take time to enjoy the pool, which is very nice and spacious. The beach is wonderful and the water is clear. We also enjoyed the adjacent beach just to the north, off the Royal Ka'anapali golf course and just south of Kahekili Beach Park and the Royal Lahaina Resort. The sand was very steep, going to the water, but the water was very enjoyable and uncrowded.

Ka'anapali is a great section of West Maui, and we enjoy the proximity to Whaler's Village for shopping, as well as downtown Lahaina. Kapalua is a short drive north, and the drive around NW Maui is very do-able from this location.

I like that the Sheraton perpetuates Hawaiian culture through hula lessons, lei making, weekly luaus, and Hawaiian art in the public areas & rooms.

Room Tip: For that isolated feeling and direct ocean, off-island views, choose building 6, also known as Moana...

Have just returned from Sheraton Maui. We were allocated a beautiful ocean front room in building 3 and although we could not fault the room we unfortunately were right next to the elevator shaft which we heard at all hours on the first night and morning. We spoke with Evelyn at the front desk the next day. She couldn't have been more helpful with the offer of moving and several different options including a chance to view a suite in building 4 right on the top left corner which we were able to upgrade to for a reasonable rate. The balcony had exceptional views of the whole resort and beach and the proceedings on black rock every night. The room included a small kitchenette (No crockery or cutlery tho), a spacious lounge, bathroom with bath tub and twin basins and a large bedroom with a very comfortable oversized king bed and a separate balcony. The views were visable from every part of the suite- even the bathroom! Evelyn also chased down some English breakfast tea for me so I could wake up a familiar drink in the mornings....We'd like to thank her for making our experience a memorable one! We were also very happy recipients of complimentary bottles of champagne shortly after check in as our agent had told the hotel we were staying to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was an unexpected and lovely gesture!
My husband loved the snorkelling and had many close encounters with the turtles.
We would be very happy to recommend this resort to anyone looking for a fantastic sun, sea and poolside relaxing holiday.

Stayed here for five nights in late September. Had a wonderful time, it really is the best hotel on the beach, right up against Black Rock with some great snorkeling. We stayed in Building 6 above the Rock with view of Molokai, which was relaxing and quiet.

Check-in. We got there at 2:30 for a 3:00 check in. Not a problem, we went to the bar and had a couple cocktails and left my cell phone number with the front desk clerk. At 3:30 we went up to the desk, I noticed my number had been crossed out and yet I never got a call. He said 10-15 minutes so we walked around the grounds. At 4:00 came back and they were doing a shift change. He left without saying anything to us. I had to find someone else and they said FIVE more minutes. On the couple other occasions I had to talk to the front desk I found that they weren't overly friendly and just going through the motions. But you don't deal with them everyday and I wasn't going to let them ruin my vacation, just a disappointment.

We did the breakfast plan (tip/tax included), excellent food. Had dinner one night at the restaurant and it was great. Service at the restaurant was always superb.

Inside Bar area. Bleh. Not inviting at all. Usually empty, we only went once. The bartender was more interested in watching a reality show. Just not a cool place to hang out for drinks.

Beach Bar area: two beach bars that close early (one at 4pm, huh?, the other at 8) so there isn't anywhere else to have a drink near the beach on this property after 8. Bartenders nice, but not all that personable compared to the Royal Hawaiian in Oahu and other places we went.

Pool - Excellent area, nice to relax by although we are on the beach so we didn't understand why people hung out by the pool every day. More a place to refresh for us at the end of a beach day.

Beach - Great location, some amazing snorkeling (turtles swim right by you).

Cost - They will get your for EVERYTHING and it's not cheap. Want a chair, pay for it. Want an umbrella, pay for it. I'm paying a lot of money for your hotel PLUS a stupid resort fee and you charge me? Just make me prove I'm staying there and give me one. Ridiculous. Luckily we were bequeathed two store bought patio chairs by someone leaving so we used for the week and then gave them to someone else. Wonder how long those have been passed around, LOL.

Towels were free but you have to have a card to get them. Then they'll ask you if you want to buy sunglasses while you're getting the towel. Yes, I'll buy overpriced sunglasses from you since the ones on my face while I'm talking to you are not noticeable enough. You get the drift, any chance to squeeze an extra dime out of you on their already expensive resort with a ridiculous resort fee they will try and do it.

Now, I'm not complaining as much as warning you if you stay here (I did give this hotel four stars). It's just bothersome but won't stop your enjoyment of the beach, sun, cocktails and all the other fun you will have on Maui. It's just the way of the world now. But their front desk staff could use some customer service training, that is for sure.

Coming from the Royal Hawaiian, where service was top-notch, this was disappointing. I'd stay there again for sure, the Sheraton Maui, probably not.

Steve

Room Tip: Building 6 over Black Rock is worth the money for the great view.
