My husband and I are staying in Kahana and wanted a casual meal so we decided to try BA. Read a not so good review on Trip Advisor, but it was the only review so what the heck.
I have to agree with the other reviewer about the service. Our young watiress had an attitude of "Move em in, move em out". She had an air of someone who is very busy, and yet there weren't many patrons in the place. The young lady handling the water had to notice we had not been given steak knives. The waitress did not pause long enough to give us a chance to ask. Nor did she even once ask how our meal was or if we needed anything. Although I did hear her ask the people behind us!
The good - Excellent Wedge Salad. First cold salad on a chilled plate that we have had in Maui. Prepared perfectly. Wine was good and nicely chilled. The baked potato - hard to screw that up!
We ordered steak since the hype is their "certified Angus beef".
I was going to go with the nightly special combo since I wasn't starving. But, I wanted to opt for quality and decided on the $27 Filet Mignon. When it arrived, I was jazzed. It was about 2" thick and cooked perfectly (sometimes hard to do with a thick steak) med rare.
Good thing the bus person noticed we didn't have steak knives because I could not have cut the poor steak any other way. Didn't matter though, because I also could not chew it. Never had a filet that bad. I had my husband check it to make sure it wasnt just me. I tried to keep going thinking maybe it would get better but it did not. If our waitress had ever checked back I could have maybe asked for something else. She breezed by once or twice but did not stop. Another server did take the time to ask if we had everything.
I ended up eating half of my husband's New York which he did not want to finish because it just wasn't much more than barely average quality. But it was a lot better than the filet! Something wrong there!Unfortunately only the bus girl noticed my half eaten steak and she probably just dumped it in the garbage.
The place has been remodeled since we last were in Maui. Used to be a noisy Outback Steakhouse. Nicer atmosphere now. Soft lighting, nice decor. Could maybe choose some more appropriate background music at dinner time though.
Overall, with more careful staff training and maybe doing a quality check on the beef once in a while, could be a nice place to eat. I might go back on our next visit, buit I would go for the chicken!
