“A wonderful family place.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2005

We stayed there December 17 through 23rd. We were lucky to have beautiful weather and a great hotel. Two kids, age 9 and 11 loved the beach and had many friends from the first day. Yes, the rooms are small but why are you in them except to sleep? Even though the place was full, we had no problem with the pool chairs and no wait for service. We had breakfast included and to our surprise the kids under 12 eat for free. Highly recommend to have breakfast included if possible otherwise the buffet is $25. Took a trip to Molikini and Lanai with the whale foundation and found it to be perfect. The staff all were very knowledgable and helpful and this snorkel cruise was one of the least expensive. Ate at Leilanis a few times with good prices and great food. Lahaina was very pricey and crowded while we were there. Don't know if it is always like that or was just because of the Christmas break. Overall, a great stay with The Westin and will return. Oh yeah, The Heavenly Beds!!!!

Returned this Feb after a wonderful stay last year at the same time. We didn't realize that this time we were booked in the older tower. It certainly is a lot different. No closet space, tiny dark bathroom, stained carpet. Because we were return guests and starwood gold members we were invited to
a "manager's reception" on Wednesdays where managers from different aspects of the hotel really want to know what you think. Those managers were friendly and willing to "make up" for a bad experience. Otherwise, I always found the front desk staff unfriendly and uncaring. The hotel was 100% booked most of the time we were there, and fell to 98% our last few days. Therefore no chance of un upgrade to get out of the old tower. I would go back to the Westin but only if I could get a room in the newer tower. It's
unfortunate that only the top managers have a can-do attitude, but the faces at the desk don't seem to care much.

Stayed at Westin Maui in January 2005 for 9 days and it was worth every penny. We were upgraded to a Oceanview room without asking. The room is spacious with a great view of the pool area and the ocean. The bathroom is super spacious with the wonderful Heavenly Showers. We had the Air Condition on high all the time so having the Heavenly Beds (Down comforter) kept us warm overnight. The grounds are nicely kept. The restaurant is abit expensive but the food is delicious. There is also food service while you're by the pool with almost the same menu as the restaurant which is several dollars less than sitting in the restaurant. We did go the Whalers Village almost everynight which was nice. The shaved ice by the pool is wonderful and delicious especially if you need to cool down from the hot sun. The staff and maid service was excellent. We had a cleaned room everyday with fresh towels and two bottles of water in our refrigerator. The day we checkout (1pm), we were given a suite to shower and change before leaving to the airport at 6pm without charging us. That was a plus since our flight wasnt' till 12midnight. Overall, we had great experience there and are thinking of going back the end of the year. We have also recommended this hotel to friends and coworkers who are thinking of going to Maui.

We just returned from the Westin Maui Resort. If you've made reservations, relax!!! I am a fan of this website and since making my reservations at the Westin last June, I have sweated this trip. When you spend this kind of money to stay at a hotel, you have certain expectations. From many of the reviews I'd read, I wasn't sure what to expect and wondered if I'd spent my vacation wishing, "If I'd only changed my reservation to ..." From the minute we arrived, we found not only the Westin staff, but Maui folks in general, have a very pleasant disposition (heck, what is there to complain about in Maui anyway?!) The bell hops greeted us warmly, we received leighs and were kindly assisted into our room. We had a third floor "garden view" room and found the view very pleasant. We did try for an upgrade, however the hotel was booked (mid-winter break for many of us mid-westerners!) It is always worth asking just the same, as I am often granted upgrades in most hotels if they have a room available!

With a family of four, the standard room is small. Accept that fact right now, resign yourself to living out of your suitcase and getting a comfortable night's sleep and you will have a great time!

For those of you on a budget (if there is such a thing in Maui), consider using your in-room frig to stock up at Costco and Walmart. On our first day we purchased, paper bowls, cereal, spoons and milk; bagels and peanut butter; apples and grapes = with the in-room coffee (Kona coffee is the best) we had BREAKFAST. We also purchased turkey lunch meat, paper plates, a loaf of King's Hawaiian bread (excellent), chips, cookies and "beach snacks" = with the fruit we purchased and some mayo and mustard packets from the breakfast bar downstairs, we had LUNCH. Mix this up with a few meals out and there you go! Not grand, but affordable!
We used the two drawers in the TV armour to store our food and we were all set!

A few other tips: WHALE WATCHING-- do NOT go out with Pacific Whale Foundation's captain "ZEEK." Trust me on this one, you will watch (through your binoculars) the other boats head to the spouts and breaching whales while you troll or "park" in still water. However, our trip with them earlier in the week with captain Mike, was excellent. SNORKELING--if you snorkel around Black Rock in Ka'anapali, don't forget the north shore around the other side of the rock near the Westin Villas. While we saw many beautiful fish and felt very safe in the water in front of the Sheraton; however, we didn't see any turtles until we ventured around to the northern shore. Water is still relatively calm and safe. HANA--it can be a very long day depending on how many stops you make. A couple of suggestions. If you have the Maui Revealed book, there are several suggestions of places to visit where they tell you to ignore "keep out" or "private" signs. The islanders were very clear on this point: in many instances these lands are on private property and in other cases, these stops are on SACRED LAND. While you will probably visit unscathed, we respected the islander's request to leave that land alone and enjoy the many other PUBLIC spots available. We still saw more than we had time to thoroughly enjoy! Lastly, CAR RENTAL--if there are more than two of you and you plan to do the trip to Hana, you really need a four-door car. We had a two-door and after about the third stop, the seat flippin' thing really getting old!

I have really gleaned a lot from this website, hope I can offer something here in return. Aloha and mahalo!

Don't believe the naysayers. The Westin Maui is an awesome place to stay. If you book a "budget deal" room...you get a budget-room! Since you don't go to Maui every weekend, (or else you wouldn't be reading this) step up to the plate and spend the extra dough and get an ocean-front room or suite. You won't be disappointed. (This from a guy who used to stay at the Four Seasons in Wailea)

We had a wonderful week at the Westin Maui! Gorgeous views of the beach (one of the BEST in Maui too) and great service from the hotel staff. They all have the "Aloha Spirit"! You can watch the Humpback whales all day long from your balcony!

I will be back for sure!

The Westin Maui was absolutely OUTSTANDING! My husband and I went here for our honeymoon. We stayed December 12-17, 2004. We were welcomed with a beautiful lei greeting. This is a great time of year to come to the Westin Maui. We are actually considering returning this year for our 1 year anniversary during that same week. It was very quiet and the hotel was filled to about 70% capacity. Everything about the Westin Maui is amazing. The hotel lobby-waterfalls, poi fish, tropical birds, etc. The restaurants are great. I would highly recommend going to the breakfast buffet in the morning, ask for Tammy. She is very nice and has excellent advice on what do to and see in Maui. The "Heavenly Beds" are just that-and the "Heavenly Showers" are average. The pools are excellent, water slides and water falls to play in, very comfortable chairs to lay out on. The outdoor massage is a treat! The gym is nice, it overlooks the pools and beach. In the winter, you can see the whales jump right out in front of the hotel. Honestly, the Westin Maui was perfect to us. We wouldn't have it any other way. The staff is there to make your experience memorable. Also, make sure to always ask if there are available upgrades. We got a beautiful ocean view room just by asking. Enjoy!

My husband I returned today from our trip to Maui. We opted to stay at the Westin as we have never had a poor experience at one and always had an enjoyable stay. I am unhappy to report that this time was different.

We stayed for 4 days. I found the grounds not a nicely kept as most of the other resorts/hotels and everything seemed on "top of everything else". The pool areas were so crowded it was difficult to walk past without bumping into them. One restaurant in particular was practically in the pool area and lacked atmosphere.

The room was small, but clean enough. Though we were supposed to receive two bottles of water daily, this only happened occasionally. The balcony was okay, but dirty, and where our room was situated, fronting the pool, it offered very little privacy.

We found the resort very noisy and busy- and way too compact. We ended up barely staying or eating on the resort. We tried for the breakfast buffet (actually more expensive than the Hyatt) but I refused to eat there because birds (sparows) were dipping their feet in the maple syrup that was laid out and one landed in the bacon tray. When we informed the server we could not be eating there for that reason, we were still charged 16.00 for two glasses of orange juice and two cups of coffee.

Outside of the valet staff, most other staff members were not overly courteous and seemed to just not care.

We toured the Sheraton which is also owned by Starwood and would suggest staying there. It was larger, quieter, and the grounds were much nicer than at the Westin. We do not plan on returning to the Westin Maui. It was not worth the expense.

Also, the waterfall that they have along with the parrots are so loud you can hear them in your room. The waterfall ran all night and it was difficult to relax.

Hope this helps.
