“Perfect honeymoon!”
Reviewed May 8, 2011

My husband booked the westin via starwood points. We found the resort itself to be beautiful from the entryway leading to the common areas and the various pools. We did not have any probs finding poolside chairs at anytime during the days we spent there and it was not overly crowded. We stayed away from buying any food at the resort since there were so much great local fare to be had in the surrounding areas.

The room was fine. Nothing fancy, but the bed and the shower heads were exactly as named - heavenly. Housekeeping was friendly and they did an okay job. If you skip hk, you get vouchers you can redeem for starwood points. Since all they really do is turn down the bed, i recommend opting for the points. We had a bit of an ant prob, but we accepted that it was self inflicted and maintenance came up to spray the prob areas.

The resort fee is a bit of a joke - $25+tax/day for a couple bottles of water, slow wifi and free access to self parking. But we understand its a resort and it didnt take anything away from our experience.

Overall, i would def book the westin again for our future trips to maui, whether its a romantic getaway for two or a fam vacay.

Tips:
Tell the bellmen youre checking in upon arrival to avoid $$$ valet and theyll open the gate for you.

Get a small car - parking spaces are super tiny everywhere and if you do road to hana, the smaller the car the better.

Yelp food in the surrounding areas (lahaina grill for elegant dining, gazebo in napili for yummy bfast, etc).

Snorkle/scuba/snuba with trilogy.

Old lahaina luau is totally worth the $$!!

Me and my husband had a wonderful time when we visited Maui last week. The hotel has a good class & style and is located right at the shore of Kaanapali beach. The spa here is also good. We ordered room service for breakfast for the 2 days that we were here, it was a good service and good food though a little over priced. Overall it was a very good experience.

This was one of the nicest vacations I've been on. We actually stayed with our kids and another family as well. We went for a little R&R before my husbands 16 deployment to Iraq in 2006. So it's been awhile but I'm sure the staff and atmosphere haven't changed much. The pool is within close proximity to the Ocean, what a dream, it's just unbelievably beautiful. Give it a ten. I would highly suggest the lahina luau well worth the money.

We've been to Maui many times and this was our first stay at the Westin. The hotel was beautiful, the pools were very nice (the kids loved them), and the beach right in front of the hotel was great. We had a garden view room on the 2nd floor, but because of the landscaping, our back patio was right at ground level--it was very quiet and private.

The pros:
Clean room/good maid service
Bell hop hooked us up with free stuff left by previous guests (boogeyboards, beach mats, etc.) There are plenty of freebies to be had, so I would check at the hotel before I bought any sorts of water toys.
Beautiful grounds
Helpful and friendly staff
Nice, central location
Breakfast buffet was included and was pretty good . .. well stocked, clean, and consistent day-to-day.
Complimentary valet parking when self-park was full (all but one time this was the case)

The cons:
VERY crowded (all but two of our eight day stay, if you were not sitting in a poolside chair by 7:30am, you were not going to have a chair that day). They were actively "bouncing" people from holding chairs, and you still needed to be down there early to claim a chair. Two different days we unknowingly sat in chairs that had been reserved by someone prior to 6:00am. The staff had confiscated their items before we got there, but that did not stop them from harassing us about it and try to bully us into giving up our seats. I really did not appreciate the stress and tension that the chair situation brought on--I was there to relax!

Workout room was very warm and crowded. I think the temp was due to the number of people in there. Most days all of the treadmills were taken each time we looked. On the quiet days I was able to get in there and get a treadmill and it was cooled down a bit. This resort just seemed to be overcrowded in all facilities.

We never received this complimentary tote bag that everyone is talking about. We saw people with them, but never got one. Not a big deal, but it would have been nice to have.

The kids eat half price is a joke. Part of the reason we picked the Westin is we were sold a package including kids eating half price. All it means is that the Westin has a kids menu . .. they call it half-size, for half-price or something like that. It was typical bar food/kids menu items, and anyone walking in off the street could get those same prices (just don't pay extra for this). We finally wandered over to the mini food court at Whaler's village and were able to find a decent salad and sandwiches on whole wheat (we wished we would have tried this sooner--but were not expecting anything very good out of a mini foodcourt).

The beds are standardly outfitted with down comforters and feather pillows. Being allergic to down/feathers, I requested that they make up one bed non-down, which they nicely did. The only problem was that every night I would be sitting in bed and start coughing . . .turns out the maid would mix pillows/covers up between the beds. Every night we had to sort through all the bedding so that I could get a non-feather bed. Again, not a huge deal, but if you are allergic this is not fun! I've experienced similar problems at other Westins . . .I think they have a corporate misunderstanding of guests with allergies.

We started using our breakfast buffet vouchers at the Sheraton. It was so nice that we had the ability to do this. The staff there was friendly and welcoming. The food was equally good to that of the Westin (though a bit different in offerings) and it was SO much quieter. We enjoyed the peace and quiet and noticed that this hotel was MUCH less crowded.

All in all, it was a great vacation. This is a nice property, and great for kids. If the price were the same, I would stay at the Sheraton or Hyatt, given the choice. We visited the other resorts just to compare and the Westin was far and away more crowded than the other two. I don't want this review to sound too negative, but I also wish I had been more prepared for what we got. I'm used to Hawaii being relaxed and low-key and this resort is not that . . .it's packed full and buzzing with activity.

Aloha Portland456- We appreciate you taking the time in sharing your candid review on Tripadvisor. We were happy to read that you enjoyed breakfast at Ono Bar and Grill, location, scenery and the level of service provided by our housekeeping and valet employees. As we welcome these kind words we are humbled by the feedback we receive to improve ways we can satisfy our guests. Had we known the obstacles that you faced during your stay, we would have been more than delighted to make your stay comfortable and renewing. We are disappointed to about your unforeseen experience you had at pool deck. Clearly this is not representative of our standard in keeping our customers relaxed. We have shared your feedback to our department heads for review and action. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback as it will give us the opportunity to fine tune our service delivery in the areas mentioned. Mahalo!

Afer a long flight to Maui, the Westin Ka'anapali was a beautiful drive from the airport where we arrived to a breath-takingl lobby to start off a wonderful week. The view from our room was unbelievable.....not only could we see the ocean but we also saw the mountains. Spending time at the pool was great.........and the beach in front of the hotel was great. Just down the beach is Black Rock - a great snorkel site.

Spending time in the spa was a highlight of our tour. The staff was friendly and professional.......making sure that your every need/want was met. The quiet room overlooks the beach and puts you in a most relaxed state of mind - just sitting.

The Westin Kaanapali far exceeded our expectations for our trip.....what a wonderful place.

Room Tip: Rooms in the beach tower Whalers Village side

Good -
location, pool (except having to reserve chairs at 5am), no hard sell on condos, shuttle service.
Bad -
rooms small and had many issues (broken stuff and clogged drains), daily resort fee was a joke and should be included in the rate, staff was moderately helpful but disinterested, drinks are through the roof expensive, they charge you for everything
Ugly -
no service model at all. If you are gold or platinum you get meager and varying discounts on certain items, but have to carry your card with you and ask for the discounts. They will not post them at checkout without a fight. Flat rate the discount and apply it at checkout. Nothing is easy. When you are on vacation you want easy, not more work. Concierge tacs on a charge for arranging outings, we found direct booking was 20% cheaper. No attention to detail at all. Novreturn trip for our family of 4 to the Westin.

Beautiful grounds. Modern decor. Lots of kids. Great pools with cool swim through grotto and fun water slide. Hotel Can be crowded. Self parking can fill up quickly (valet available at extra charge). Resort fee includes a reusable tote bag (thumbs up) and REALLY slow wi-fi (thumbs down). Convenient location with stores and restaurants at Whalers Village next door. Be aware that Kaanapali is a haul from some of Maui's attractions like Haleakala and Hana.

Room Tip: Ocean tower newer. One side overlooks whalers.
