“Paradise!”
Reviewed September 15, 2011

My wife and I stayed at Napili Sunset for a week during the Memorial Day holiday with her mom and our 1 y/o daughter. It was our first time at that property, but the second time at Napili Bay. Like so many others have said on TA, Napili Sunset is not the most modern, but IMO you cannot beat the overall value. We had a 1 br/loft, 1.25 bath condo on the second floor, facing the beach. It was perfect. Plenty of room, saved a truckload of money cooking in the condo instead of going out to eat every night, cable tv, parking, free wifi, falling asleep to the sounds of the waves, exceptional housekeeping and prime location will keep us coming back. That the Napili Sunset is literally in the middle of the beach, you have short, easy walks in the sand to the Gazebo Restaurant to the South for amazing breakfasts (I recommend the macadamia nut pancakes!), and to the Napili Kai's restaurant, the Seahouse, to the North for inexpensive happy hour cocktails and appetizers. The front desk staff are very helpful - I even had Verizon deliver a replacement cell phone to the property when mine went on the fritz! The laundry room is big, clean and they have free soap, along with a myriad books, beach toys, snorkel gear and beach chairs (you'll save a bundle from not having to rent the stuff from Snorkel Bobs, which is right next door to the property, if you can't find all the things you need). I could go on but suffice it to say, the Napili Sunset is my #1 choice for Maui.

Room Tip: The beachfront units are sooo worth the extra cost. Dinner on the lanai at sunset - cannot be beat...

My family discovered the Napili Sunset over 20 years ago and we have made it our yearly vacation spot. Despite some serious searching, I have never found a better location in the islands. It is about twenty feet across the lanai, down some grass and on to a postcard-perfect beach. No high-rise hotels, no activity booths, just laughing kids and happy snorkelers.

The view is unbeatable, especially at sunset. We usually choose to save the hundreds of dollars we'd spend to eat in Lahaina, and use the grill right up from the beach to cook with our neighbors and then eat on our lanai with a better view than any restaurant. The atmosphere is always friendly and relaxed, so it feels like home, but in the middle of the most beautiful place you've seen.

Napili Sunset is a 1970s two-story condo complex on a lovely 1/4 mile sandy cove. As others have commented, the best feature of the of the place is the fantastic setting with a jaw-dropping wide view of the turquoise bay and 2 islands. All at a fair but not cheap price. The living room is furnished with tired wicker furniture, but the king size bed in the bedroom was firm and very comfortable and clearly new-ish. We used the kitchen every day and I found it well stocked. The housekeeping exceeded my expectations. Coin laundry, beach chairs and floaties are a big plus. As other TA members have mentioned there is lots of local flavor here and that is a big positive, but also can be a significant negative. Allow me to explain...between the two Napili Sunset buildings is a beach public access alleyway. All day, every day, seemingly unemployed youth hang out in this alley and drink beer and play their scratchy transistor radios full blast. These youth also hang out in their pick-up trucks in the street and parking lot behind the condos. Most of these vehicles are 20+ years old which would not ordinarily be a problem except when they rev their engines late at night (one morning at 2 am). At least half of the bedrooms to Napili Sunset are immediately out on this back parking lot. If you are a light sleeper, this condo complex is probably not a good fit. The beer-drinking locals mostly kept to themselves but we did witness one ugly brawl which ironically started right under the Napili Sunset sign. But there is no security at the condos so guests were told to call 911. Police never came. My guess is it is all public property in the alley and beach so NS can't do anything about the problem or they already would have. Lovely lady on the end of my building got so fed up with the locals hanging out in the alley next to her unit that she started blaring her own classical music back at them. So like I mentioned in the title, lots of local flavor and aloha feel. I just don't think it's for everyone. And if you stay here be sure to ask for a unit away from the alley.

We stayed for 2 weeks in the studio with a partial ocean view from the Lanai. It had a full kitchen, and the room was large in size and very clean. The property has a BBQ grill poolside for guests to use, which we did. The footpath to the horsehoe private beach is steps away. Larger rooms are directly on the beach. The ocean is beautiful, with a coral reef to block large waves for swimming, or one can snorkel. The staff which included Kim, Zena, and Fred did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. They are terrific! The location is also close to great restaurants, a supermarket, and other shops. This West side of Maui is quieter and relaxing, yet not far from other parts of Maui. This is a great place to stay. We really enjoyed our stay at the Napili Sunset, and would stay again for sure!

Room Tip: studio with aprtial ocean view

My husband and I were married in Maui on April 3rd, 2011. We spent the entire next week on the Island with our 34 guests and all of us stayed at the Napili Sunset together. Fredrick, the manager, was so helpful as we were dealing with all the reservations and he and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout our entire stay. These condos sit right on the ocean so the view is incredible. There is decent snorkeling right off the beach and AWESOME snorkeling right down the road. The condos are very neat, spacious, and comfortable. I loved it here. The pool is warm, the outdoor showers are warm, and there is an awesome BBQ right on the lawn for the guests to use. Everyone who came to our wedding loved this hotel and we will DEFINITELY be back. Thanks Napili Sunset for making our trip so special.

My husband and I stayed here in march in one of the studio units they are not beachfront but it's only a minutes walk to the beach. We stayed in unit 208 which was very well stocked especially the kitchen and also the unit was very clean. The studio units do have air conditioning unlike the beachfront units but we did not need it the tradewinds that were blowing were more than sufficient.
The staff was great very friendly and helpful the place and the grounds are kept up very nicely. The pool is very nice and is heated which is a plus to me.
We loved sitting out on our lanai and even had a litlle view of the ocean. we loved Napili and hope to stay in that area again on our next trip in a couple years. we would definitely stay at Napili Sunset again without hesitation.

Just came back from the Napili Sunset and spent 5 really lovely days there. Once I saw the picture on their home page-with balconies directly facing the ocean, I knew I had found the right place. The low-key ambience was exactly what we needed. The rooms were as expected, a touch dated but very clean. We had to have them come and fix our toilet several times, which they did immediately. One other thing is that the sofa bed was old and uncomfortable, and it should be replaced. If you are planning to utitilze it, this should be a consideration for you. The water was calm the entire time. The bay itself is a good choice for families, as off to one side the surf is as calm as can be and little kids were having a ball out there with their parents. I am the un-resorty type, I like to be able to get my toes wet as soon as possible. Napili is an excellent choice for the price. Aloha, you can't go wrong here.
