What this lovely little hotel lacks in 21st century amenities, it more than makes up for in charm. There is no room service. There is no 24 hour front desk service. My husband and I really waivered on whether to book this hotel given the possibility of a real "BOMB". When we arrrived in the parking lot, I can admit I was a bit worried. Once we came through the gate and into the courtyard, the palm trees and view straight into the ocean soothed any fears. Our room was 'beachfront' and never has a description been more accurate. During high tide, the waves were so strong we could feel them in our room. If no one has mentioned the water in Hawaii, be PREPARED. The waves are seriously strong. There is a lovely (perhaps a bit narrow) stretch of beach and it was not at all crowded. Many people sat on their decks and patios and opted to use the average size pool.
The hotel was not exactly as it was showed in the internet pictures, but in some ways it was better. Our room was clean, perfectly appointed, and the bathroom had been remodeled. We had a LARGE tile shower, new vanity and storage shelves. There were beach chairs and towels provided. There was a small kitchenette which we didn't use, but I know there were some dishes and pans/bowls. There was no A.C. in our room, but a fan which worked just as well. We left the sliding door open and felt the breeze all night.
My husband and I spent four nights in February during a two week honeymoon tour of Hawaii. When starting to plan our First Anniversary trip, The Mauian was the FIRST place we checked for availability. We didn't even consider the beach front condo on Kauai or the resort in Waikiki. We would not hesitate to return to this charmer. It is basic, but it is beautiful.
