“Very nice”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Stayed for a week. The pics you see at the website are what you see when you are there (you won't think the pix made it look better than what it is). Grounds are perfectly manicured. Units are clean and updated. Beds and pillows are great (way better than the Hyatt where we stayed for 3 days after the Mauian).

This is a five star place if only they had a hot tub. For the life of me I can't figure out why they don't have one as they have the space for it. Such a relatively small thing addition could make a big difference.

Also, we stayed in an upper unit for the first night and then requested moving to lower unit for the remainder of stay. We are a family of 4 (8 and 10 year old) and so guessed we would like the lower unit better and we did. I'm not sure why most contributors here say that the upper unit is the way to go. I didn't find that to be the case and wouldn't have even without kids. It's nice not having to walk up and downstairs every time you want to come int and out of your place. We're active: going from beach, to playing ball on grass, back to unit for food or sunglasses whatever, then to pool, back to unit for something, etc. you get the idea. If you're upstairs, it just takes much longer to get in and out of your unit. The couple above us seemed to only play board games all day on their balcony so for them it was fine and another couple across from us seemed to be on their laptops all day (odd) so for them it would be fine but for most people, me thinks lower unit is better.

lots of kids under 5 years old while we were there (in case you don't like kids). When summer starts, I'm guessing there will be many older kids.

Gazeebo restaurant (south end of Napili bay) over rated IMO...especially when you may be waiting an hour to be seated. Sea House is good. The cove just north of Kapolua Bay is the best for snorkeling and nobody will be there unless one of the snorkel\scuba boats are there. That's where those boats go in the afternoon and most go to Molokini in the morning.

It took a while to drive from Kahului, but the drive was scenic and once we turned off the highway, past a small shopping center, through a residential neighborhood, we found the Mauian. Easy check in, and the welcome board had our names on it. The gardens and the pool were beautiful and the tiki lights were very romantic looking at night time. The rooms were very clean, had modern Hawaiian decor, really new bathrooms, and a balcony view of the grounds and ocean. There was no TV but I would have never turned it on. There's a great breakfast area, and some evenings you can meet other guests at a cookout. There's a great restaurant at the hotel next door ($$$) but it has a great view of the beach (see picture). Pay close attention to the tides because the beach is quite narrow and our first night we got hit by a random wave, along with our towels, magazines, and camera! Luckily there's a Walmart on the island :) Can't say enough how nice this place was....

The location of this hotel could not be any better. Fell in love with the property. It's extremely clean and well maintained. I really liked the kitchenette in the room as it made the trip more affordable. I found the continental breakfast to be quite generous. Please remember it is a continental breakfast and the hotel tells you that as well.
It's also a very relaxing property. Not many youngsters looking to party and get rowdy.
There are a couple of restaurants that are walking distance as well as a convenience store right next to the property. Other than that you have to drive every where else. We stopped at Costco after we landed and ate in most of the time.
We had an upstairs room so not aware of what it sounded like below.
None of the rooms had air conditioning and we were fine without one. When It's extremely hot there, it might be a problem. We were there in May when the weather was beyond perfect.
One other first world problem: we had an ocean front room and the waves were so loud they kept me up a few of the nights...I know, I know.

Room Tip: From what I heard from other hotel guests, downstairs room are extremely loud. And the oceanfront ro...

PROS
+ terrific location - you can see the ocean from your room, just a half block from a beautiful beach
+ super friendly service
+ free breakfast buffet
+ nicely appointed room, with lanai
+ walking distance to Merriman's

Considerations
- no AC - fine for one night, but might be hard for some when it's extremely hot
- shampoo and conditioner combo was not great, I'd suggest bringing your own
- not a ton of privacy - decks, buildings are fairly close together and there are a number of people on the beach. Perfectly fine for me (traveling solo) and my needs on this trip though.
- screens on windows, but not on main lanai door

Our room was metres away from the beach, premises clean, resort relaxed, love that grounds are open, we had a fabulous stay there, we were visiting for a wedding and quite a few of our family stayed here. Staff were friendly and helpful, great photo opportunities over the beach, sunrises and sunsets, easy walking to restaurants, shops easy walk away. Looking forward to returning with family again.
No airconditioning in the rooms, ceiling fans were going non stop, we did through the early morning hours get a good breeze through the kitchen windows.

This is the perfect location if you're looking to get away from the big resorts and the prices are really reasonable. The rooms are just steps away from the beach and regardless if you get a pool view or beach view the grounds are kept in prestige condition. The rooms have a modern look with that island feel. The only reason I gave it less than 5 is because you can hear everyone around your room. It seems like the walls are very thin and your next door neighbor is just a thin door away. Other than that for the price and the Location!! this is an awesome spot to stay.

We discovered The Mauian for ourselves when we were looking for a place convenient to Kapalua Bay's fabulous snorkeling. But what has kept us coming back since then (probably 2006) is the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The accommodations (updated a couple of years ago) are wonderful, and it is right on the beach. Oh, and Kapalua Bay is a short walk, especially if you take a short-cut like I do through the Napili Kai. We have met and enjoyed socializing with people from all over the country, with diverse tastes and styles. The staff take care of the guests quietly and without fuss. We are taking my sister and her husband in November - and they are from Florida!

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have foot traffic about 20 feet from the lanai, but that is how we meet people. C...
