I intended to take the ferries in Sep 2013 to Molokai and Lanai for day trips and this hotel is just outside the pier where you would catch the ferries. The front desk was friendly and the room is old but clean. There is a huge lanai that comes with the room and it faces the Banyan Tree Park. There is no parking near the hotel itself but you will receive a parking permit at a location about one block from the hotel. The pier is just outside the front door of the hotel. The ferry to Molokai is on the right and the ferry to Lanai is on the the left. Excellent restaurants are all around the hotel.

This Inn, operated by Best Western is a refreshing change to the plentiful resort accommodations found around Maui.
The inn is located in the center of the Front Street area, surrounded on four sides by the Lahaina Courthouse/Banyan Tree, the Harbor dock, the library and Baldwin House.
It is a Historic Property listed on the National Register. The Inn has about 50 rooms in total with one on site restaurant. The other restaurant location was shuttered during our stay. Maybe it is only used for parties or catered functions. For an older building it has been maintained very well.

We booked a double room which was small with 2 twin beds not the usual queen size beds one expects of hotel rooms. If you need the queen size bed be sure to inquire or state your preference. It didn’t matter to us. Beds were confortable.
Front desk staff was friendly and accommodating. You can sign out pool towels at the front desk.
The room was clean, with usual room amenities or wardrobe, refrigerator, TV. The AC unit was above the window with a remote and the room had a ceiling fan. The ceiling fan makes the AC more efficient. The deck/balcony/lani was large with table and chair. Our room was #32 on the inside overlooking pool and next to a stairway. There are no elevators located in the Inn and all rooms are on the 2nd floor. First floor is all retail/restaurant space along the exterior. With the stairway and the retail below we never noticed any excessive noise during our 4 day stay, not even from the room next door. The pool while small does give a place to catch some sun and relax after visiting the sights, shopping or daily activities. No fitness center.

The true front of the Inn overlooks the harbor. In the morning you can watch the ferries come in and departing. There are also several excursion vessels that leave from this location. When tide is out the lighthouse seawall area has a sandy area below from which some younger folks snorkel/boogie board from. If the cruise ship is in port this is where it embarks from. So the area in front of the Inn can get busy during the day.
The back side of the Inn overlooks Front St, and one side is along the Lahaina Courthouse square with the Banyan Tree. The other side of the inn more of like the Courtyard is along the Public library and park. The Inn is about a block in size.

If driving up to the Inn you must turn down off Front Street to get to the lobby/check in. You cannot directly access the lobby of the Inn from Front Street side. There is dedicated 15 min parking out front for loading. The Inn will give you a pass to display in window so you can park for free in the public pay lot behind Baldwin House across the (Front) street.

The Courthouse deserves a visit as it serves as the Visitor Information center and houses a really nice gallery of works by local artist. Depending on the time of year and day of week you may come upon a festival or art fair held under the Banyan Tree. We were there in Mid September and there wasn’t too much of a crowd for the Maui Friday Town Party.
Baldwin House offers tours and it is a 2 for one admission with the Wo Hing Museum located down the road. The Baldwin house has candlelight tours on Friday evenings.

Front Street is the commercial hub of the town, it caters to the Cruise ship trade but there are some unique and interesting shops to be found among the chains and major brands. Going all the way up Front Street and one block in you will find several shopping centers, supermarket and banks (Starbucks). It is a nice walk, so leave the car parked.
We did not eat in the restaurant attached to the Inn but found a great local breakfast spot on the other side of the library. We tried some of the Front Street restaurants for meals and Went to the Old Lahaina Luau which we thoroughly enjoyed.

All in all, this Historic Inn in this great little Hawaiian town is a welcome diversion to the resort style accommodations and is budget friendly. I would gladly stay here again on my next visit to Maui.

Use the Gypsy Guide App for navigating around Maui, give good tips and information on sights to visit as well as history.
Recommend the Trilogy Snorkel Molokini Excursion which leaves from the Maui Ocean Center Marina.
If you did the Road to Hana you will want to do the drive around the northern part of the island. Takes about 2 hours and the views are worth it, esp for some of Julia Banana Bread.

This is an older character building that has been nicely maintained and conveniently located on Front St in Lahaina. Staff were very friendly and maintenance replaced the missing air conditioner remote control within 10 minutes of asking. My room was facing Front Street where all the bars and restaurants are and everything quietened down around 10 pm. Parking was free about a block away but they let you park the car in front of reception to get your bags to your room. Note - no elevator but the rooms are all on the 2nd floor. Room rate included free wifi and a discount at the restaurant but I never went. For the location and price paid, this is a very good hotel for a cheap Maui getaway.

We only stayed one night here but it was clean and a good location. An older building and parking is a bit of a pain but overall this was a good value at $200 a night. If staying on the upper level, expect to walk up the stairs with your luggage so if you have mobility issues this may be a problem. Staff were friendly and it close to the shopping in Lahaina which is handy.

My wife and I just returned from a 9-day vacation in Hawaii, including 2 nights at the Pioneer Inn. The Pioneer was great. It was close to everything in town, but was still very quiet. The building is very historic, but the rooms were modernized and comfortable. Our deck looked out on to the banyan tree that dominates the town square. We could also see both the harbor and the mountains.
Be aware that there is no elevator to the 2nd floor and the free parking is located about a block away. Neither of those issues were any problem at all.

First time in Hawaii and we could not have been happier. The service at the front desk was impeccable - great local advice re places to visit and eat etc. The hotel had a really colonial look and feel, but was a perfect mix of the old and new. The location was ideal, right in the heart of Lahaina by the banyan tree and harbour. We'd recommend booking with breakfast included as it was delicious and filling -you could skip lunch!

The room was a good size, clean, with AC and ceiling fan being very welcome in the evening. Our pretty balcony faced the internal courtyard which didn't bother us because it was quieter and still managed to see the ocean as well as the garden.

To sum up, among a vast series of giant, concrete hotels, the Best Western Pioneer Inn stood out both in character and a atmosphere. We will definitely stay again if we make it back to Maui.
