I am glad we did the Old Lahaina Luau as it was the only event during our stay that exposed us to a little bit of the history and culture of Hawaii. The setting at the beach was beautiful and the weather was perfect. Spending an evening at the Old Lahaina Luau truly instilled in us a sense of 'being in Hawaii'. We saw the men dig out the kalua pig. We wore orchid leis and sipped our tropical drinks. We ate a lot of different foods and among them, poi and taro salad. We watched the traditional dances that signified the stories of the Hawaiian people. We listened to the Hawaian songs whose sound was as soothing as the waves... Just like they said, "Relax, you're in Maui.".
I would recommend the luau to first time travelers to Hawaii such as we were. It really makes for a more complete Hawaian experience by giving this beautiful place its unique definition and character.
