My husband spent five days at this hotel in February 2011 we had planned a longer stay but had to leave early as my mother was dying..this was our first trip to Maui we loved the informality of the hotel, the location right in beach and walking distance to sights also 10 minute local bus ride to Lahaina. The hotel is run by Hawaiians and decor is authentic Hawaiian. Nice poolside bar and all amenities but not high end like Hyatt or other expensive hotels close by. Our room was on top floor sixth with ocean view. Hotel was always quiet in evenings and lots of great restaurants close by. You pay half for this hotel what the high end hotels charge for all the frills. Hotel staff really friendly even when we has to check out early. Only complaint is that it is a long drive from airport we took shuttle van it took an hour. Would not recommend making that drive on your own at night after a long flight.

Room Tip: Ask for sixth floor room with ocean view

We spent a week at this hotel and really enjoyed our stay. This hotel is not by any means luxurious or super sophisticated however, it was clean, well maintained and a great value for being on the beach. The staff was sweet, courteous and accommodating. The location was excellent and made it easy for us to get around. We will definitely stay here again!!!

We had a wonderful time at this hotel, excellent location on a great stretch of Kaanapali beach The property is older but in good repair, high levels of service and hospitality and an affordable hotel in an expensive area. A few minor maintenance issues were quickly dealt with. The grounds are spacious, very tropical, trees, lawn areas and the beach. The pool is medium sized. A ten minute walk to the Whalers Village shopping center along the beach walk, a paved walkway that goes along the length of the beach. One main restaurant that is open for breakfast and dinner, as well as the free standing Tiki Grill (also a separate bar) that serves burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings and such. Free nightly Hawaiian entertainment close to the restaurant, you can dine while listening to the music and hula show. Spacious lobby with tour desk, gift shop and craft sales from tables in the lobby area. There is a guest laundry. We had an ocean view room with a great view of the resort and the beach. About a 45 minute drive from the airport. Really nothing I would think of changing.

Room Tip: The views would vary depending on the building, depends if an ocean view is important to you or not...

We spent only one night here, thank goodness. The room was overpriced and desperately needs updating. The mattress offered very little support and the air conditioner failed to cool properly and kicked on and off it seemed like every five minutes. The breakfast buffet was crowded and food mediocre.
The pool is small but the grounds are nice.
I would not stay here again.

My family (consisting of 2 adults and two young children under 4) stayed here late February and enjoyed ourselves but recognise there are many things this hotel can improve on.

PROS
- Fantastic location -in front of a beautiful beach (head down to the front of the Sheraton called Black Rock to swim and snorkel with turtles!) and a few minutes walk to Whalers Village.
- Some great staff, especially Khoo Ui on the Service Desk (both my sons loved her and she embodied the aloha spirit).
- Value for money - one of the cheaper hotels.
- Children's passport program - a kids club isn't offered but they do offer a program that children can participate in. My older son loved this as he loved receiving stamps and gifts and learning Hawaiian words.

CONS
- The crowd - this hotel is full of senior citizens which didn't suit a young lively family.
- The room is dated and you can hear everything from the room next to you. We were in a connecting room and could hear the phone ringing and conversations from next door.
- Some poor staff and silly decisions - the Tiki Grill was closed on one particular day from 11.30am-1.30pm. This would have been fine if the other restaurant served lunch but it didn't and wouldn't serve food despite the Tiki Grill being closed during the lunch period. There was no food available on the premises which forced us to walk to Whalers Village, not fun with hungry children. When we spoke to the manager we were shocked by his unresponsive attitude. He looked away several times when we were explaining our problem hoping that by not looking at us we would just go away. He didn't know how to assist us and the apology for the inconvenience was made through gritted teeth.

This hotel is a favorite of ours. Its a bit dated but very welcoming and relaxing. The hotel staff has always been so helpful and very kind. We've stayed there several times over the past few years and it just never disappoints. The hotel grounds are always so beautifully maintained and its very relaxing just lounging on the lounge chairs and reading. The Tiki Bar is fun and our favorite bar tender is Dale. He is a fun guy and always seems to know just what you like!! The location of the hotel is just about as good as it gets, too! If you are looking for a trendy place to stay, this is not your place. If you just want to relax with a very 'old school' Hawaiian vibe...this is your place!

Room Tip: We love the ocean front rooms!

Having just returned from 10 days in Hawaii, for my Birthday,I have to say our stay in Maui in this wonderful hotel has left us with memories we will never forget. There is nothing about this place that we didn't like,. Loved the very friendly staff who always greeted us with a big warm smile, promptly followed by an "Aloha" . Our room (on the Maui floor) was just amazing, we had partial views of the sea, but was high enough to see the sunset and capture some amazing images on our camera. Our room looked onto the wonderful green gardens which were immaculate, you could sunbath , rest & relax anywhere you choose as there are plenty of sun loungers provided dotted all over the garden/pool & beach side areas. In the evening, you could sit on your balcony and listen to the waves with Hawaiian music playing in the background ! We loved the history of the place...50 years old and has an amazingly strong Hawaiian culture running through it, this was felt from first entering the hotel on our first day.We didn't have the breakfast package as we had booked tours which left early in the morning, they did however offer to make something up for us, but it wasn't necessary as both our tours included breakfast & lunch. You are so close to everything and can do as much or as little as you choose. Whalers Village is only a short walk away with some lovely shops and restaurants with wonderful atmosphere. Truly a holiday to remember, we have plans to return to this wonderful place with our family.

Room Tip: Our room on the Maui floor was perfect..you have the best of both worlds, a partial sea view that st...
