“Good Budget Hotel in Fabulous Location”
Reviewed March 19, 2011

Spent 4 nights at KBH as a solo female traveler (late 30s). I really wanted to love KBH...folks always rave about the charm and aloha, and I was ready to experience it myself. I came away liking the hotel, not loving it, but wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to travelers looking for budget lodging in a really great location.

Pros: room was exceptionally clean, nice sized lanai, fridge in the room, location really cannot be beat, Trilogy activities desk onsite was great and reasonably priced, live music nightly.

Cons: room was very dated, had an electrical issue with the sconce (shot flames out of it...very scary but quickly tended to), thin walls, had to pay for parking, pool was just okay, and not fitness facilities, no wireless internet. Also, only the Molokai wing offers non-smoking rooms, and I believe those are the most outdated rooms.

A note about the thin walls -- this actually was not an issue until one night when the electricity went off and I could hear the person next door to me snoring. Otherwise, I found that I was definitely younger than most of the guests at the hotel...which was both good and bad: good because there were no crazy loud nights or early mornings, but bad because I did feel a little out of place and did not really hang out at the Tiki Bar like I thought I might.

I did not really interact with the staff, and that appears to be what typically garners this hotel such high reviews. I know it has a reputation for its true Hawaiian spirit and aloha, but frankly KBH did not have the same hold on me. What it did deliver, unquestionably, was a very clean room in a location that you really cannot beat. I loved being able to walk to Whalers Village in a matter of minutes, and the beach in front of the hotel is really nice (and the cabana rentals are very reasonable). I even enjoyed lying in the beach chairs at night to do a little star gazing.

Come to this hotel if you're on a budget and you don't need a fancy, manicured resort to complete your Hawaiian vacation. For the price and location, it's a solid value.

Just got back from 7 nights in Maui. We have stayed all over the island from Wailea, Kihei, to Kaanapali. The best advice is to make sure you know what you really want before booking this hotel. It is older, built in the 60's and it shows in the building. The grounds are beautiful but not "manicured" compared to some other properties in Kaanapali. The rooms are ok, but worn. Breakfast is good, but exactly the same every morning. The Tiki bar makes great drinks. The Tiki grill has a small menu with very few healthy choices, but really great service. The pool is small, but theres no fighting over lounge chairs, and no charge for towels. We traveled with two young teen boys who didn't really care for it. Not much for them on the property. Nightly music was lovely. This hotel didn't have many young couples (30-40 age range). Mostly older folks 55+. Our stay wasn't bad but it wasn't spectacular either. The entire hotel staff was very very nice. If you want a higher end hotel, multiple pools, updated rooms and amenities, this is not the place for you. If you want laid back on a budget your golden!

Just returned from KBH and left a pretty favourable impression. As other travellers have stated, a pretty good hotel, great location, and really good staff. We recommend staying in the freshly updated rooms. We were on the 5th floor (Kauai bldg), and the room and it's view were fabulous. Only 2 minor criticism's: The property is a bit aged, and the included breakfast package venue is a bit chinsey (location faces the front of the hotel and buffet offerings a little boring). Other than that, a truly fine time and cudo's to the property owners and their promotion of Hawaiian heritage. PS--Don't miss Dale (the 400,000 Mai Tai Guy) at the Tiki Bar. As he would say......AhhhhhhhhRight! Well done KBH. As a side for dining, highly recommend the Tiki Grill (at KBH) and the adjacent Hula Grill and Lelanis.............do not go to Dukes, about 15 minutes down the road. This restaurant does not hold a candle to the other Dukes eateries/locations.

What a wonderful place to visit! We have made 10 trips to Maui and have always stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Why would you stay any place else??? The staff is so friendly, we love the nightly hula show and who could possibly have anything negative to say about the Tiki bar with Dale and the rest of the crew. The Tiki Terrace is a great place to eat (as is the mixed plate) and we have never had a bad meal. The large courtyard with all the lawn chairs is such a draw for many, but I prefer having the ocean at my beck and call. It is a friendly, wonderful place to visit, and we have made many, many friends over the years. Having small refrigerators in the room is a plus, as is the safe. However, I do have to say we have never felt the need to use the safe for our valuables especially since you will get to know your housekeeping staff on a first name basis. I just can't say enough about the Kaanapali Beach Hotel!!

This is not the most glamorous hotel or condo on Kaanapali. You will not be in awe of their lobby. You will be in awe of their staff, their flexibility, their knowledge of the Hawaiian Islands and culture, and their aloha spirit. It was genuine.

They had great classes available at no charge. Adults and kids were welcome. Three different kinds of lei making projects, pineapple cutting, weaving, and a tour and explanation of the medicinal properties of many of the native plants on the property. There was hula provided by students at the local hula schools each evening and music by locals who just like to play Hawaiian music.

Lunch was available at the Tiki Grill and beverages at the Tiki Lounge. I was suprised to see there was no price gouging as I've seen at other places on Kaanapali. Usually there is a premium for poolside snacks and beverages - not here.

There was a large grassy lawn with lots of sun and large trees. You could hang out in the sun for awhile and move to the shade when you'd had enough. They didn't care if the beach chairs were scattered all about. And of course, the beach was just a few steps away

We had an ocean front room that was at most 50 yards from the beach. Which was fabulous until the tsunami warnings came. Then it was a little disconcerting. All was well and the waves never surpassed the beach.

Sam, the conceirge, had 6 strangers knock on his door - at home, looking for a place to stay for a bit during the warnings. His family took them in without question. That is just the kind of folks that work there.

For my husband and I this was our most relaxing Hawaiian vacation. We have been to most of the islands many times and have stayed in hotels and condos, but never the same place twice. I believe we will plan to stay at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel next time we go to Maui. Hopefully sometime very soon.

Excellent location on Kaanapali Beach. Beautiful beach with pretty beachwalk connecting resorts and Whalers Village shopping mall. Hotel has beautiful, well-maintained grounds with an outdoor bar and grill. Rooms were adequate, but not luxurious. Staff was delightful and very helpful. Excellent value for the price; a relative bargain along this pricey stretch of beach.
