“A Memorable Experience”
Reviewed September 24, 2009

We spent 4 days here in August and were delighted with our choice. I had sent my luggage on ahead of our stay, and they were right on top of it when we arrived. The desk clerk was lovely when we checked in - but there was one little glitch. We reserved a partial ocean view room with a free upgrade to full view for our stay, along with one night free and the daily breakfast. When I opened the curtain in our room - we overlooked the roof of the dining room and could barely see the ocean. I immediately let the bellhop know my disssatisfaction and he picked up the phone to the front desk and within minutes we were moved to a room with a great view - ocean and gardens with the mountains in the other direction. It paid to speak up - especially at those prices and due to the fact that the hotel was not fully booked. Our room was very nice - 2 gueen beds, dresser, table with 2 chairs, armchair and a spacious balcony with a table and chairs. Bathroom was all marble - very nice. Walk-in closet with a safe and shelves. All quite roomy.

The main part of the hotel is lovely. The atrium is filled with artwork and lush greenery and flowers. The penguins are fun to watch and you never know when you'll come upon a parrott. We watched the flamingoes from our balcony every day. The grounds were well maintained as were the pools and other public areas.

We took advantage of the breakfast buffet every morning and usually timed it right. There were days when people had to wait in a long line, but we didn't experience that. We preferred to sit back a bit as there are sparrows that fly around as it is open-air and if you get up and forget to cover your plate - you will find them there upon your return. Because it is open, I cannot really fault the hotel for that. I thought the buffet was excellent. I usually had a hard time making up my mind what to select and they did change the offerings a bit each morning. Great way to start the day.

We were quite busy during our stay so only used the pool once. It was wonderful. The waterslide was amazing - a bit scary. At the pool snack bar, we were going to order large nachos, but the bar attendant suggested only getting the small portion - great suggestion and much appreciated. Although the hotel is right on the ocean, I must agree that the beach is not so great. Not much sand but I know you can walk down a bit to a wider sandy area in front of the other hotels.

As for parking, we decided to not use the valet which was $12/day and had no problems finding a space. We parked in the back of the hotel and it was easily accessible to the elevators for our room.

On the last day we stored our luggage and when we returned, the bellman came right out and loaded up our car. Couldn't have been nicer. All in all - we had a very good experience at the Hyatt. It was centrally located, food was delicious, staff was friendly and our accommodations were great.

I stayed here with my husband, 2 young children & our 7 month old baby in May this year and i honestly could not fault it. Our room was spacious, well appointed with quality fittings, the king size bed was beautiful and one of the most comfortable i had ever slept in. The staff were very helpful, friendly & accommodating. We asked to move to a ground floor room and this request was met with no fuss at all. The grounds of the hotel are huge and quite stunning, the bird life is quite special and the children LOVED it. Ditto the kids pool area with water slides, water falls and toddler pool. If you are looking for a great hotel for children AND adults then i really would recommend the Hyatt. Location is perfect, right on the beach, amazing sunsets, nice stroll to local restaurants and The Whalers Village for a bit of retail therapy. For dinner we loved Leilani's & The Hula Grill. Lunch at the Hyatt was good too, try the Umalas grill, again cant fault it. Overall we loved the traditional style of the Hyatt, lots of solid wood, perfect lawns, plant life and an amazing art collection. By the way if you are like me and you have young children and the thought of high rise is too scary then request a ground floor room in the Terrace wing. This was perfect for us, not stressful and room for kids to run around on the lawns directly in front of the rooms. There's a kids club too. Go and enjoy!

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon in Maui and it was simply amazing. We booked our vacation through our travel agent and could not have been happier! Upon arrival we were greeted with 2 fresh flower leis, a complementary bottle of champagne & a keepsake photo ablum. The entire staff from the front desk clerks to the waitresses pool side was extremely friendly and accomodiating, none of our needs went unmet. The grounds are breathtaking and the hotel ammenities unmatched. A bonus perk at this hotel was the in house Expedia represenatives office located just down the hallway from the main lobby. We were able to book a ton of adventerous & relaxing excursions right from our hotel. My husband and I booked a helicopter ride, The Road to Hana tour, snorkling, mountain biking, zipplining and hiking - each tour included lunch and most picked us up right at the hotel. We also enjoyed a couples massage in the ocean side cabanas that was the perfect way to end our vacation. Although the room was a tad small for such an extended vacation, we didn't mind since we were out and about enjoying all Hawaii has to offer most of the time. We had dinner at 3 of the on site restaurants, each with a differnty style cuisine that was mouthwatering! We couldn't have been happier with our choice!!!

My husband and booked this hotel through our travel agent 10 months in advance we had a reservation from a partial ocean view to an ocean view...or something like that. When we checked in (after a really long flight full of honeymooners) the hotel didn't have our room right as our travel agent had made a mistake in booking. The staff was not helpful with this one bit and couldn't care less that this was wrong. They treated us like we were trying to trick them out of a room. The lady finally said they would put us in the same view room but with 2 beds, not the king we booked, as they had to save those for the people who had actually booked them (oh, you mean like us????) When we checked into the room we were really disappointed in the accomodations. It was just you're generic hotel room with 2 crummy beds and an Ok view of the far away beach but mostly the gardens below. Our hearts sank as we wondered if the trip we'd been planning for over a year was being ruined from the start. We spent the first day calling the travel agent, and talking with the manager of the hotel who finally agreed to hold a room with a king sized bed for us the next day (as they had already checked in all those rooms). So we stayed packed and upset that first day and had to stay out the next morning until 3pm when they had our real room ready and WOW, what a difference that made. The room with the king sized bed had a much better feel, even though the room size was the same you just had way more room and a little sofa and table in there. The view was amazing from the opposite tower. You could see the entire ocean, hotel grounds and the mountains. We spent lots of time on the balacony enjoying it all. We had breakfast buffet included in our package and that's the only was I would actually use the buffet. It was really good, lots of variety and well stocked and maintained but really overpriced for $30 each. Maybe splurge one day but find somewhere else the rest. It did seem like most people had it included though as it was pretty busy. They did get you seated fairly quickly and the location was beautiful, right on the pond with swans swimming around and birds flying all over the place. The staff wasn't overly friendly here and service was lacking and we were always left wondering do you tip during a buffet? The beach was our next stop but the beach infront of the hotel we were told in "non-swimmable" though we did see some people in there. There is a reef that runs right along the front with keeps you out of it for the most part and at times there is not sandy beach area there and the waves were kind of rough in that area. We went knowing this so it wasn't a big surprise for us. So we walked down awhile until we found nice sandy area. The only problem is that you have no chairs to use then. I don't know if the other hotels would rent to you or not, we didn't try to find out. Sitting on the sand with just the towel was hard in some spots because the wind blows the sand right onto you, like being sandblasted. We walked down to black rock usually (near the sheraton) and the wind wasn't a problem there and the snorkeling was the best there. After that we tried the pool, but good luck finding a chair. Very little shade available and even fewer chairs. I think my Ymca has more chairs around their pool. When someone finally would get up we'd hover over them until they left. Pool service was lousy if you can even get the ONE server to come over to you. We waited one hour one day and she never came over to us. Once we did get her attention the food and drinks were good but overpriced but who cares when your sitting in the sun. They do have someone coming around with free ice pops and cold towels so that was really nice. The pool itself is realy nice and not very crowded (makes you wonder where all those people who have their towels on the chairs are) Deep in some places and shallow in others. The do have a bar in the pool but it's not a swim up bar, you have to walk around to it in the pool. The slide is super fast and a little scary because it's in the dark. The pool itself is open until 11pm but we never saw anyone in it after 7pm, always meant to go but just ran out of time. We did eat dinner one night at the hotel and it was pretty good though expensive. The staff was very friendly there. I found the men on staff at the hotel all to be very helpful and attentive but the women all seemed to have a chip on their shoulder for some reason. There were alot of honeymooners there and I felt like that's who they really cater too. At times I felt like just another number the staff had to deal with. The truth is anyone going to Hawaii is going for some special reason or another and should be treated that way. All in all, this was a pretty nice hotel, the room was nice and quiet and had a great view, the cleaning staff always seemed friendly and left us fresh towels, extra shampoo, body wash and lotion. There are also lots of shops on the main level with everything from childrens items to bathing suits, gifts, postcards anything you might need, though bring lot so suntan lotion as they charge twice what it cost everywhere else! You really have no need to leave the hotel, but you will, there is so much to do there!

I have stayed at MANY hotels of varying types and not have led me to be more disappointed then this one. The grounds are AMAZING and the staff is very pleasant and friendly! However, we went here for our honeymoon and we checked out the same day as we checked in due to the quality of the rooms. We were shown three different room with the same results! They were dirty, dusty, and run down. In addition, decor wise it is very old and motel-like and very dark. We just couldn't bring ourselves to stay there under those conditions on our honeymoon. We are not picky hotel stayers and we really found this one under par! The grounds, i believe, give it the rating of 4 stars but we do NOT recommend this hotel to anyone. Hotels in Wailea are worth the $$ (that's where we ended up going and losing out on the money we put down on the Hyatt unfortunately(
