“Awesome desserts in a cool country location”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

On the advice of a local, we stopped by Grandma's Coffee House for coffee, but ended up having dessert instead. The fresh baked desserts, a coconut/pineapple bar with a shortbread like bottom crust and a banana pineapple layer cake both tasted homemade in the best sense of the word. The bar was not overly sweet and the coconut on top was slightly crunchy where lightly browned and chewy underneath. The layer cake was moist and flavourful without the banana being overpowering. Visiting in a Sunday, this looked like the place to go after church services to have a bite to eat, be it lunch, (we saw some yummy sandwiches being served) or a sweet treat.
Seating is available outside in front, on the deck in back or inside. Lots of character, including what appears to be the resident cat who was sleeping on one of the benches. Water was available. Lots of coffee from which to choose and the gals working the counter were very personable and efficient. Parking can be a challenge as this is a popular spot. They appeared to have live music in the deck. Will stop by next time we are in the area.

“Love It!”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

We visit Maui twice a year, and three or four times each trip we make the 45 minute treck from Kihei to Grandma's for breakfast. As my wife always says, "It's a long way to go for breakfast," but she never turns down an offer to return. It's a funky old building, next to "The Chinese Grocery Store" and an ancient, non-operating gas station. The interior is "rustic" with a couple of old wooden booths and a few wooden tables. There are also some wooden tables and benches for outdoor dining. Their coffee is outstanding and the breakfast menu offers a nice variety. Great omelettes, waffles, french toast and a selection of breads and pastries. Amazingly enough, they even offer bagels with lox and cream cheese! You order at the counter and the food will be brought to your table. Great people watching, too. Lots of local characters, including cowboys, frequent the place and you might find yourself having a chat with them. Weekends there are usually local musicians playing on the outdoor deck. A word of warning; There are no restroom facilities in the restaurant. A stop in the park up the hill aabout 1/4 mile before you get to Grandma's is the closest facility.

“You Must Be Kidding!”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

We planned our day around stopping in Kula before our trip up to the Haleakala Crater for sunset. After looking on Trip Advisor and reading the reviews, we made Grandma's our lunch destination. Really? The place looked grubby, the young woman taking orders at the counter was disinterested, and a peek into the food preparation area while we waited our turn was just plain scary. We turned around and left.

“Starbucks who?”

On our way to Kula, my husband and I decided to stop by Grandma's Coffee House to pick up some coffee and snacks. We were quite impressed with our cafe mocha and iced coffee latte. Bold and flavorful coffee for all the coffee lovers out there. We also decided to pick up lunch and had an amazing meatloaf sandwich with a great side salad and their turkey club. Reasonable prices considering we were in HI. This place is a must!

I can't emphasize enough how much I love this place. Our wedding photographer took us here after our esession. We got a cappucino and a chai - which was all made to order. This is one of the best chai's I've ever had and I drink them all the time. We also ordered a banana walnut coffee cake and I have to say it blew my mind. When we were getting ready to leave, I went back in and chose a bunch of other pastries to bring back to the South side. We ended up getting Rum Raisin banana bread, Banana chocolate chip and Banana coconut bread. I also chose pineapple coconut bars, cherry crumb cake and pumpkin pie. My whole family devoured it right away. Of course I had to go back and we did, so far 5 times since our trip! Get there early if you want bread, it goes fast. We arrived at noon the next trip and the bread was gone. Next trip we got bagels and lox. There was only one chef, so it took a bit since they were slammed. It was SO worth the wait! A HUGE toasted bagel, generous portion of salmon with red onions and capers with local Kula tomatoes. We was KILLER!
Next trip was more pastries and coffee. Great service, excellent food and incredible history.
