We decided on seeing sunset at the summit so we could enjoy the drive up and we are so glad we did, We were amazed at the change in landscapes as we got higher and the view going up was something to see and experience. Take note the ticket booth doesn't give change for your park pass so have the $10 per car. Once at the top we stopped at the crater lookout.....that is a sight in itself looking over into that vast area with all the changes in colors.. Wow. We arrived at the summit lookout about 45 min from sunset.. Took a look around at the observation area with all the great information, It was cold and windy but we were prepared and dressed for the occasion, Our biggest laugh of the day was seeing everyone wrapped in the striped hotel towels and even one lady in a bedspread. Not everyone reads trip advisor before taking this trip I guess :). As the sun went down I realized that the observatory that is at the summit (not open to public) sits directly in front of where the sunset would take place so after a few photos and some deliberation we decided our best view would be a little down the mountain at one of the lookouts so that's what we did and it was amazing, the view of sunset was stunning. We stopped at a couple different places and even made it out of the park area before dark. Maybe the sun sets a bit farther north so the observatory isn't always in the way but in December it sure was. I'm glad we chose to descend for some shots, This was worth the drive and even if you aren't keen on sunrise do this instead, Equally amazing!

Enjoyed the trip up the hill for a great sunrise. Had a nice warm cup of coffee from the Coffee Cart on the way up. Worth a chat with the nice guy who runs it each morning. Parked at the crater (not the summit) and enjoyed great colors and receding shadows as the sun came up. Bring a warm jacket or dress in lots of layers. Then hiked the trail around the rim of the crater for a bit. Then drove up to the summit (only a few hundred feet higher) and enjoyed the view. You can see four other islands including the Big Island. Then made our way down the hill for a nice breakfast at Kula Bistro (Lower Kula Road). Passed tons of bikers on the way down (looked like fun) but glad we were warm in the car. It was a great experience for sure!

I think everyone should go to see the sunrise at Haleakala at least once! It is not the easiest thing to do when you're on vacation, but the view is stunning. There will be a lot of people there, so be prepared. Take the warmest clothes you have as it is very cold and windy, especially as the sun is not up yet. There is no food up there as well, so if you must have your morning coffee, take it with you.

Once the sun comes up, most of the crowd goes back down, so take your time to go up to Red Hill, engage in some of the Ranger talks (especially if you have kids).

Get up real earlier (230) drive to the top and watch the greatest sunrise ever.
1. Take warm clothes
2. Take blankets
3. Something to sit on chairs, or mats
4. Coffee or hot chocolate will make it perfect
5. A good camera
You will never forget the vision you will see

Unbelievably beautiful! Worth the groggy trip in the dark up steep switchbacks. 2 recommendations: Get there early as they will shut down the upper lot when it is full and you will have to see it from the lower lot (we saw it there and it was still beautiful). Also, dress warm! we met another couple who didn't get the word ant they froze! it gets very cold here.
