We rented a one-bedroom beachfront condo at Sugar Beach Resort for 7 nights stay at Kihei. The condo is everything as advertised: close to the beach, nice lawn area in front of the lanai. Well-stocked condo that provide beach chairs and ice cooler. I do want to give a plug to the Ali'i Resort folks. They greet you at the condo when you arrive and make special deliveries of kitchenware when we ask for specific items that were not in the condo. They are friendly and warm and I highly recommend renting from them.

We are in condo 121 and the beds are very comfortable (contrary to previous reviews). Even the sofa bed is the most comfy I have slept in.

Had a garden view unit but also very good view of ocean. One of the best place we have stayed in the Islands. Small but well keep units on the beach just outside your door. The beach is the longest one to walk on any island.

Room Tip: has some road noise might be better to have the ocean view room, as the are the farthest from the road

As long-time Maui visitors, we think we have finally figured it out. Sugar Beach Resort. It is absolutely the best condo complex on Maui. The location is ideal as it is midway between Wailea and Lahaina. The beach is 5 miles long and sandy. The views are surreal. It is one of the few oceanfront complexes on Maui that has en-suite laundry which makes life so much easier when you are traveling. All of the condos have central A/C which is almost unheard of on Maui. The entire complex underwent a $13 million dollar renovation just a couple of years ago. The oceanfront pool is gorgeous. There is an activities desk and restaurant on property. It is now our favorite spot. Make sure you get a rental car. Maui has a great bus service and there is a bus pick up nearby but I would get a car. Make SURE you carefully look over the photos. Some of the units are still stuck in the 1970's-80's and those were fun decades for sure but I don't want to sleep on a bed with 30 years of funk on it. Make sure you get an updated unit because these units vary dramatically in their standards-- just like all of the condos on Maui--they vary greatly depending on the Owner. The building is concrete so it is very quiet (you can't hear the people walking above you).
Units ending with lower numbers...101,201,301,401 etc are going to be closest to the road.
We stayed in #311 which is a corner unit on the oceanside in the Mill building and it was fantastic.
Everything was updated and super clean.

Room Tip: Corner units are best as long as it is on the oceanside, not the roadside (ends in 11 or12) Pick an oceanFRONT unit or an oceanVIEW unit that at least ends in 08 or 09. The other oceanview units have oceanviews but...if you can get a better view, why not? Look the pix over CAREFULLY. You don't want to show up to ragged towels and pilled-up sheets.

The name penthouse is a misnomer although that is what the elevator says also. This unit is on the top floor of the 6th floor building facing the ocean that is 100 ft away. The unit itself was clean and had all of the utensils needed to cook with. The kitchen area is small and is need of an upgrade. The bathroom/shower area is also small and in need of an upgrade, but we were comfortable enough for the two of us. The resort grounds are always clean & well kept...the grounds & pool area are beautiful and there is a small fish pond with large koi in it. There is an onsite concierge where you can purchase tickets for almost everything that goes on in Maui. You can also rent boards, snorkels etc right there. You can also borrow a noodle to use in the pool. The beach is beautiful and is made for walking. You can walk for miles in either direction. The sand is hardpacked so if you want to wear sandals that would work. Further up the beach towards land the sand is soft. From this unit you can see turtles out in the ocean, but at this time of year (mid may-the whales have left) Also at this time of year you can not see the sun setting as it goes down behind a piece of land. At other times of the year the sun would set where you could see the sunset. Best burgers are at Cool Cats in Lahaina, great breakfast is at the Kihei Caffe and fabulous sandwiches (good price also) at 808 Deli in Kihei.

Aloha and thank you for your review of the Sugar Beach Resort and unit PH30, which we manage. I am glad you found the condo clean, comfortable, and in possession of everything you needed to cook with. We actually require all the condos in our rental program to include a list of over 100 items that we think will allow guests to feel as comfortable as possible while on vacation. I am also glad to hear you walked up and down the five mile beach that fronts the property. It is a great walk! We hope to see you again at the Sugar Beach Resort!

First time in Maui, first time at Sugar Beach Resort and we will never, EVER.....stay anywhere else!! This place is everything you think about when you think of Hawai'i. It's literally on the water (200 ft if you book an Oceanfront Condo). The beach and the property are very clean, the staff is very friendly and informative. They have Event Coordinators in the office and all of them are just happy to sit and hear your stories even of you don't have anything to book. The condos are individually owned so some prices and requirements may vary but may I recommend Unit #220. Direct Ocean Front view, 2nd floor so you can see everything but not everyone can see you such as if you were on the bottom floor. Mr. Meyer provides everything in the condo you could possibly think of. Literally bring your bathing suit, a tooth brush & a little extra shampoo/soap and you are set!!

If you're a smoker, you know how hard it is to find anything in Hawai'i these days that don't make you walk to the parking lot. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO SMOKE ON THE LANAI but only the lanai. Please keep the unit doors shut while you're out there or you could be charged an extra "cleaning" fee. The property says it is smoke free but you CAN smoke on the beach. But PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, be respectful and don't thrown your butts in the ocean or on the ground. I walked the beach daily and took an old water bottle with me to dispose of the cigarette butts. Hawai'i is beautiful for a reason and we smoker's have enough judgment on us as it is. Let's keep the aina (land) clean and not give anyone cause to discriminate against us more than we already are :) Condo Rental Info: http://www.vrbo.com/42670

Room Tip: 2nd floor #220. DIRECT OCEAN FRONT. (Smoking is allowed on lanai)
