“Fantastic first B&B experience”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

I could reiterate all of the reviews listed here but it would all be for nought because their impressive rating speaks for itself. Bob and Sandee have set up a comfortable, homely environment for the B&B and we had nothing short of an amazing time.

Everything was well set up, breakfasts were delicious, the room was ample and welcoming and we enjoyed ourselves. If you are looking for an affordable place to stay in Maui that doesn't skimp on the comforts of home, look no further.

Just can't say enough about how great our stay was. Sande & Bob are wonderful hosts -- feel like I've known then forever. The gardens are beautiful, rooms are lovely & clean , breakfast was delicious --- lots of fresh fruit, great coffee, bagels, etc.The B&B is convenient to everything & exceptional value for the price. Sande & Bob go out of their way to make everything about your stay memorable. Ocean Breeze Hideaway truly was our home away from home in paradise --- we will definitely be back!

My partner and I stayed in the smaller suite, the Ocean Room, in February of 2013. The bed was comfy, the garden was beautiful, and breakfast was great! Bob and Sande are excellent hosts, and the location is very convenient. They don't serve breakfast on Sundays, but they will pack you a breakfast in the suite mini-fridge the night before upon request. They will also pack breakfasts for early morning excursions. Bob and Sande offered great travel tips and conversation over breakfast. Can't wait to come back!

It was our first time at B&B so we were pretty nervous and we spent a lot of time choosing and reading all the reviews carefully. Ocean Breeze Hideaway originally was not our first choice but they responded the fastest and were the most helpful with our requests so we decided to give it a try. Before we arrived, we got an email from Bob & Sande informing us that they were not going to be there. So we got very worried because all the good reviews are because of them. But as soon as we arrived, we fell in love with the mango tree, the garden, the private patio and the room itself right away! Then, best of all, we were greeted by Jody, the inn sitter, who turned out to be one of the reasons why our trip was so amazing! We truly enjoyed her company and she gave us all the good tips on things to do (e.g. farmer market, First Friday, beaches). We would have missed a lot of these cool events if it was not because of her. Everyday when we came back from a long, full-packed day, we truly felt like we were coming back to our home. There were two suites but there was nobody else in the other suite so we had the whole house for ourselves, the kitchen & the cozy living room! We like going out for breakfast to try great local food but we never had a chance to go out because the breakfast here at B&B was just too good to miss! My husband is more picky but he loved everything, the fresh fruit, the pastry, the coffee, and all. We will definitely come back and stay here when we come back to Maui. We totally can't wait! Thank you again, Bob, Sande and Jody, for making this a perfect trip for us! See you again soon!!! :D

The bed was very comfortable, breakfast was delicious with beautiful scenery on the lanai, the coffee was tasty (unfortunately not always the case when you travel!), and our hosts were delightful. We would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I stayed  at OBH in the Coral Suite for a week. I have mixed, opposite feelings about this B&B, which is unusual for me, and will therefore list "good things, bad things, and ways to improve".  I booked with Bob and Sande months before our trip and indeed they were helpful and genuinely nice in our correspondence. Bob and Sande were away on holiday when we were there but Lilo, the  inn-sitter, was fantastic. Lilo took very good care of us, with tasty breakfasts on the deck (look for anoles and geckos!). She also gave us lots of good tips.

The B&B is uphill, an easy 10 minutes' walk from one of the many pretty beaches in Kihei, as well as South Kihei Road and the bus. Kihei is a great little town and we were able to get everywhere from OBH on bikes (we rented electric bikes from Maui Electric Bikes, behind the 76 gas station on S. Kihei Rd. - fun!). We were provided with lots of bath towels, as well as beach towels, cooler, etc., which was great. Things we also liked about the Coral Suite: it has a bar fridge was was convenient for storing snacks and drinks, and thankfully, also has an air conditioner. It also has a private entrance and patio, which was nice. The king size bed was comfortable. There were two large closets as well as a dresser, so plenty of room to unpack clothing. We liked that our bathroom was private. There are many good things about OBH.

Once we arrived there, however, I became confused by the contrast of what I was seeing and the ratings OBH has received on TripAdvisor...until I realized most reviews refer to the hosts, Bob and Sande. Much of the praise in the reviews is for the personal service provided, but not so many seem to accurately describe the Coral Suite itself. The photos on their site, unfortunately (or not) do not show quite how tired-looking the Coral Suite is. We arrived at night, the room was dark. When we eventually found a light, I have to say my first reaction was one of disappointment. The room needs a decor overhaul - it is busy and cluttered with random decor items and art, which all looks second-hand-ish and flea market-y and frankly, a bit depressing. The room is always dark during the day which does not help things. The bathroom was something else altogether. It is ready for the backhoe: extremely dated, grubby, with a painted wood "Hollywood Bar" style light fixture with 12 bare, glaring compact fluorescent bulbs. We are all for "green" improvements, but a newer fixture with glass shades would've been nice. The yellow-brown/flesh pink sponge-paint job on the walls was really off-putting. The shower sputtered, and the bathtub, which drained extremely slowly at the start of the week, had stopped draining at all by the end of our stay. We mentioned this problem to Lilo who, as an inn-sitter, should not have had to deal with what was likely a long-standing problem - and certainly something that should have been addressed before her arrival.

Also, be forewarned: no breakfast on Sundays, but no reduction in the cost of the room for that day, either.

It would take very little effort and money - and a bit of fresh paint - to update and make the Coral Suite really attractive and bright-feeling...it is unreasonable to expect people to be happy calling it "home" when it is currently so drab and unappealing. The bathroom really needs to be shown some love. Everyone updates their own homes once in a while, and we travellers truly appreciate  efforts made by B&B owners to beautify -and maintain - our "home away from home" for us when on our holidays, don't we?

Room Tip: The Coral Suite has air conditioning.

We are glad you liked some aspects of Ocean Breeze Hideaway. We constantly strive to improve our bed and breakfast, and appreciate feedback from our guests. We wish to address your concerns.
There are always lights on in the guest driveway, walk way and guest room for visitors arriving at night. In checking with our inn sitter, she said you arrived earlier than expected, and she had not yet turned on the Coral Room lights.
Our correspondence clearly states that we do not provide a sit-down breakfast on Sundays. In addition to providing ideas for Sunday breakfast, we state that we are happy to provide breakfast in the guest refrigerators for Sundays, or any other days when guests have early morning activities planned.
The Coral Room and bathroom have both been recently painted. Several original works of art, as well as prints, from local Maui artists, are hung on the walls. New flooring, furniture and mirrored closet doors have been installed within the last few years. Most guests find the Coral Room and bath comfortable and beautiful. Upgrades including fresh paint are done regularly, while keeping our rates as low as possible.
We do want to thank you for bringing our attention to the light fixture in the bathroom, which we are replacing.
A plumber was recently here to fix the drains, and everything seemed to be working well prior to our departure. We are sorry for the issue with the tub, but it was not due to neglect.
In our attempts to provide a balance in the Coral Room between greenery, sunlight and privacy, we have taken into consideration your comments about the amount of light in the room. We have since trimmed the trees near the Coral Room lanai, and the room now has more available light..
If you read the reviews more carefully, you will see that most guests find that besides liking their hosts, the rooms suit them quite well.
This is the first complaint about the Coral Room in 14 years. Perhaps your dislike is a matter of personal taste.

Off-street parking, private entrance, comfortable room, genial hosts, healthy breakfasts - what more could you want. No - it's not on the beach, but does not pretend to be. We stayed a week in the Ocean room and would return. Acces was easy to the highway, restaurants, shopping, and beaches. We enjoyed the conversation around the breakfast table as we feasted on the fresh fruit, muffins, cereal, bagels, fresh juice, smoothies, and coffee. Breakfast was prepared for us for early departures and helpful hints were plentiful. Wi-fi worked well and there was a book shelf available for trades. Good lights for reading in bed and plenty of storage for toiletries in the bathroom. Loved the silk peace flags decorating the patio! Enjoyed being in someone's home rather than in an impersonal hotel. Thank you, Bob & Sande!
