“Father and daughter vacation”

Pros:
Absolutely amazing grounds! The lawn was exactly like a golf green truly impressive! Beautifully green everywhere with trees spaced out enough that you can see past into the horizon onto the beach and ocean. The swimming pool and hot tub area was well kept and clean and it was great that we could use it till 10pm at night. Our unit was right across the swimming pool area so my daughter loved that. There are bbq areas where you can grill your food outside and since we had a ground floor condo unit it was very easy and convenient for us. The grills worked great and the area was clean as well.
The ground floor unit that we rented was unit 119B and it was "ok". Since these units are privately owned it's up to the owner to furnish and renovate their unit to their own desires and how they see fit. Our living room area was pleasant. A decent couch set and dining room set with older tv (about 36"). The kitchen was the nicest part of the condo. It was newly renovated with newer fridge, stove and dishwasher and the counter and cabinets were nice as well.
Cons:
The unit had two bedrooms, a master suite (no AC) with ensuite washroom with shower and a second bedroom (2 twin beds with AC) with washroom across from it. The bedrooms I would give a 2 out of 5 and both the washrooms I would give a 1 out of 5. The bedding was in dire need of replacement. Both washrooms were in DESPERATE need of renovating especially the shower. I told my young daughter she had to wear her cheap sandals while showering because the tile and grout were in that bad of shape (fully tiled shower) and I'm a bit of a germaphobe so when it's in that kind of condition you really can't tel if it's clean or not.

With some major renovations to the washrooms and new beds and bedding this unit would be very nice. Staying in these types of accomodations it's a gamble. You really don't know what you're going to get until you check in!

Room Tip: Ground floor units are great for easy access to the pool/hottub and bbq grills!

As some of the other reviewers have said, the place certainly isn't new. we traded time share points for a week here. It is not fancy by any means, no fancy soap if you forgot yours, no pool side service other than an activities desk, but the condo was clean. All the appliances worked and the location was perfect. We could walk down to the beach and watch the sunset; the driving distance to everything was great since Kihei is very centrally located and ere are a lot of really good restaurants within blocks. There is a Safeway five minutes away although be warned if you are going to be here any length of time, stop at Costco on your way from the airport since groceries are pretty expensive. Bottom line, how much time do you spend in your room anyway.

Ehhh.... Tripavisorees gave this a
Place very good reviews but I think those people got lucky and got an updated condo. We didn't get so lucky, we got an outdated stuck in the 70/80's condo.
When we first drove up to the compound, i thought the building was old and dilapidated. The lobby/ reception area was just as old and outdated. Although receptionist was very nice, their system was so antiquated. They handed me keys on old key chains, no key cards. When we got to the room, I just wanted turn around and leave. Condo was so outdated, dingy, with cheesy 70's decor. I tried to ask the management for a better updated room, but they could not help me. They have no control over the decor. I felt so stuck, and not on on a relaxed, beautiful Maui vacation. No maid service or towel service so you are stuck with old stained towels that owners provide u with.

Can't get much closer to the ocean, and almost all rooms have a view of the ocean. Been coming here for 25 plus years, and keep coming back. Room fits at least four to sleep, but you can't get a better view. Close enough to stuff

Our trip was 1) educational, 2) restful, 3) inspiring, 4) sometimes tiring and 5) humorous. We had a one-bedroom unit on the fourth floor of Building B. We had air conditioning in both the bedroom and living room (unlike someone we met who stayed in another condo down the street that had air conditioning--but only in the bedroom). Our condo was very clean and provided a pleasant place to stay while we participated in several 'touristy' activities. The morning after we arrived, we met with Tracy near the pool for an introduction to island activities. Tracy provided us with information about these activities as well as mentioning climate changes on Maui. Tracy was very patient while we needed to change a couple of our events. She was extremely helpful and we really appreciated her insight and suggestions. Kudos to Tracy! We had nothing but a very welcome and pleasant place to stay and would certainly choose Maui Sunset Condos again. One mention to anyone who tends to try to schedule a lot of activities: if we had it to do over again, we would probably not schedule 2 full-day activities back-to-back. Getting up very early in the morning for tours can be exhausting.

We got back September 6th and gave the people in Seattle time to contact us about our stay. Why are we not surprised that they never did. They seem to care more about filling condos than giving potential clients the info they need to make good travel decisions. So, here's the skinny
on MAUI SUNSET.....Absolutely gorgeous property with a cozy, picturesque beach area more
condusive to scuba diving and wind surfing than swimming. The bay was breathtaking and
the grounds were stunning. Our 1-bedroom condo was one of the best condos we've ever done.
What we learned was beauty and function only go so far. Here's what I mean:
1. No one bothered to warn us about the channel winds that blow in virtually at noon everyday.
These aren't gentle breezes or even tradewinds, these are gale-force winds that emptied
everyone from the beach area and tennis courts, or be blasted until around sunset. We were
there in August, bu as a tour guide told us, one day, those winds are not seasonal as the
weather varies less than 5 degrees from season-to-season. On several occasions the winds
were so severe that guests could not even use the grills! We love the beach and like to go
from 8AM til about 2PM. NO WAY!
2. The second night we both woke up to the odor of something on fire! I rushed to the lanai and
the stench was so bad I called security thinking the complex had a fire. No, it's the "burning
of the sugar cane fields" which goes on periodically and always between 3 Am-9 AM so you
wind up closing your windows and patio doors and stay inside. Now, that's what 2 desert rats
from Phoenix want to do in August - close our doors and windows! It was so bad that it rained
black soot! You could watch it fall like black snow flakes. One of the most wonderful times of
the day and you had to stay in until the smoke literally cleared!
3. Labor Day was the last straw! Maui Sunset was like living in an industrial park! It was a rare
day that someone wasn't cutting, trimming, spraying, mulching, pounding, or scraping. It was
truly incredible. We were forewarned about Tuesdays so we planned our wonderful excursions
to Molokei (take some dramamine for the ferry ride throught the Lana'i Channel) and Hana and
Lahaina, Wailea and the best Luau on the island - Old Lahaina Luau. Labor Day? Oh, that's
when we dodged falling palm fronds and listened to machines chewing the up all morning. We
wondered if we were here for them instead of them being there for us!
4. Finally, it became a real irritant to go to the beach and park your chairs under a shady tree
only to be disturbed by dogs barking, running and jumping with pet owners who had little or
no regard for the people they were annoying. Yep, no leash laws. Good luck with that. It was
disturbing to watch dogs doing what dogs do and then a little while later seeing a couple just
strolling barefoot along the shoreline - I'll leave the rest to your imagination;
5. The condo was terrific but their bedroom ceiling fan was a constant irritation. They finally
replaced the one, but the "new" one was only an improvement, not a solution. Oh well.
Now, I've started with plusses, let me end with some tips you should find beneficial:
WALMART ..... not the Wally World we are accustomed to. Poorl;y stocked shelves and no
meat or produce departments. We went there once during the entire month;
COSTCO......... If you are in Maui for awhile, this is THE place to shop. Your only challenge
will be finding a parking space, but be patient - it's well worth it;
GROCERS...... watch the Tuesday ads in the paper so the sticker shock won't knock you for
a loop in chains like Safeway, Foodland and The Times;
RX .................. It was really nice having a Long's so close to where we were. Rarely went in
but it was nice to know it was there.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Spend a few dollars more and drift a little farther south into WAILEA. They ar not affected by
Cat 1 hurricanes every midday, nor do they deal with the sugar cane fiasco. The Shops at
Wailea were a really fun day. I loved the galleries and Kay loved the stores.

Aloha, We do our very best to explain to each and every guest the benefits and drawbacks of staying on Maui, specifically Kihei. We are so happy that the comments regarding the actual accommodations, lanai deck, and grounds are very positive.

Maui is a living Paradise, wind, water, local customs, and people create the scene. The Valley Isle can create some fierce winds, ask any of the Kite or Wind surfers. Winds can shift through the year and are stronger in the summer months. When driving south towards Lahaina or Wailea you'll pass through acres of sugar cane. Unfortunately a couple times a year the custom is to burn the cane to make way for new planting...when this occurs is up to the farmers and not shared with the resorts on the island. Sometimes the winds carry it harmlessly out to sea...other times right over Kihei. Maui County has no private beaches...the awesome thing is no beach is offlimits...the bummer is somefolks don't follow the rules, like leash laws, we are asking local enforcement to take another look.

The Maui Sunset is the best value in South Maui. Not perfect, but pretty great place to be anytime of year.

Mahalo,
Steve

We have spent a couple of months a year at Maui Sunset for the past few years, and have enjoyed every minute of our time there. The location is great, convenient to everything, the grounds are beautiful and the one bedroom condos perfect for two people. Many of them will actually sleep five or six people, but I would hate to be one of that size group. The en suite bathroom, with tub shower is adequate. The second bathroom is tiny, but does offer a stall shower. The living/dining/kitchen area is nice size and the lanai, with table and chairs, is perfect. The condos are available through various time share outfits or directly from the owners. We have rented four different units this way and, with one exception, have found them to be more than adequate. The one exception wasn't all that bad, but was in need of a bit of updating. A little advice: Maui Sunset consists of two separate buildings, A & B. They are exact duplicates and face each other. If you like lots of sunshine, stay in A. If you prefer to be in the shade all, or most of the day, (depending on the time of year) stay in B. The higher the number of the condo, the closer it is to the pool, tennis courts and the ocean. I would also recommend staying on as high a floor as possible, the fifth being the top floor. While our experience has only been with the one bedroom units, there are also two and three bedrood condos available. All things being considered, it is a lovely place to stay while on Maui, and reasonalby priced.
