“Awesome Sushi at Good Prices”
Reviewed November 27, 2010

After seeing that Sansei had been recognized by several reputable magazines as a top place for sushi in North America, we had to make a stop!

Atmosphere is not anything special, and I was a bit worried by its dark window/shopping plaza look. Don't let the outside deceive you!

We were very tempted by their $70 tasting menu for two which offered about 8 or 9 full-size portions, but we weren't sure we were that hungry and opted instead to go with their award-winning panko ahi, spider roll, shrimp cake, and mango rolls. The shrimp cake and mango rolls were okay, but the spider roll was very good and the panko ahi was absolutely incredible. Huge plus - prices were very reasonable and completely comparable to any of our local sushi restaurants.

There's no special island atmosphere, but it's absolutely packed! Be sure to make your reservations!

If we'd had more time, we definitely would have gone back and tried more of their creations.

“Great late-night sushi special”
Reviewed November 23, 2010

Finding a special on vacation is never easy, but we were able to find just that at Sansei. It was so easy in fact that we dined there two times (to use the local lingo). The first night we went for dinner and we tried the chef's tasting menu, which was $70 for both of us. The selections were mostly hits, but there were a few misses (though not horrendous, just average), especially some of the fish items toward the end. The sushi items were the strong point of the house.

Therefore, we returned a few days later to try the late-night sushi special. While there is the ubiquitous wait coupled with a karaoke crowd there, I didn't mind that as it gave the place a local feel. I was glad we waited, as you can really fill up at those prices. While the basics are solid at Sansei, I would recommend the Panko Crusted Ahi Sashimi Sushi Roll and the Takah Sushi Special Roll. Those signature rolls really took the dining experience up a notch.

“If your looking for traditional sushi, this is not the place.”
Reviewed November 14, 2010

Perhaps our expectations were set too high from all the praise this place has received? My husband and I went for the late night special, which is half off sushi after 10:00 pm. Little did we know but the late night special converted the restaurant into a karaoke bar which made for a very loud atmosphere. Although it was crowded, we were able to be seated within 5 minutes.

We enjoy traditional sushi without a lot of sauce and this place seemed to cover up their freshness with sauce. We started with one of their "Award Winners - Asian Shrimp Cake" and found that it was a plate full of fried noodles with a secretly hidden piece of shrimp cake and sauce all over the plate. We also had the spider roll and couldn't taste the crab in it because it was covered with sauce. To salvage our taste buds from the sauce overload, we ordered our favorite roll Negi Hama (Japanese yellowtail and green onions) since it's almost impossible to mess up. We were wrong. The fish had the consistency of mush and it did not taste fresh at all. If you want fresh sushi, go to the place down the street (Koiso Sushi Bar), which was significantly better.

“Good Sushi, Good Value”
Reviewed November 12, 2010

The sushi is good quality and fresh. Everything tasted very good and our group enjoyed the meal. The butterfish was excellent, but I would skip the Maui sweet potato tempura. It wasn't just here, as we tried it elsewhere and found it undercooked and somewhat unedible. Everything else was very good.

“Fairly Average Local Hangout”
Reviewed October 17, 2010

Sansei was recommended by our hotel concierge. We discovered that it was off the beaten tourist path, but that was okay for us. It is located in a strip mall in Kihei which was about 10-15 minutes from Wailea. Food was good, sushi was fresh and tasty, service was very good. The shrimp tempura was a bit much, but other than that it was a great night out. This would not be the kind of place, though, that would be described as quiet or intimate. Prepare for a lively atmosphere.
