Incredible food joint. The poke bowl was insane, you get to sample all four types of poke for like $11, the customer wins this one hands down. The fish tacos are easily five stars out of five stars. The beef short ribs were the best we have had so far in Maui and the Pegs Leg platter, fried fish, shrimp, scallops, oysters, and calamari was fresh, fried right and for $12 bucks felt like I was robbing the joint. Atmosphere is great, you eat at several tables near the deli counter or outside, the ladies working the inside were so nice it felt like you were a part of the family. Everyone needs to head to this place when in Maui, this Northern Nevada Family will be back again before we head back to Wolf Pack country....

This is a great little restaurant. They have the best poke available on the island. They make it fresh and almost always run out before the day is through. The fish plates are great as well. They have a small indoor dining area as well as outdoor dining. The staff is friendly and the food is good.

Eskimo Candy is a small, family-run restaurant with excellent food and great prices!!! Although there is limited seating, we took our food back to our condo to enjoy the sunset on the lanai.

We went here after reading TA reviews and it did not disappoint. We ordered the Captain's platter, BBQ ribs, and calamari, all to go. It was delicious, the waitress was friendly, the price was a value and we felt like locals.

So here we are on our quest and wondering how a place called Eskimo Candy would ever fit the requirement of a Hawaiian plate lunch. We had our doubts as we drove through industrial Kihei, parked the car in the small lot, and walked into this wacky place. Still doubts darkening our hungry hearts, we looked around at the wooden fisherman sculpture, the two huge shark heads on the wall, tons of signs listing the offerings making the small room even smaller. The open kitchen was about the same size, and it cranks out some mighty fine food.
We started with the mixed poke bowl for $11. A tasty rendition of four types of their poke that you can also buy to take out at their fish counter. Shoyu, Furumake,Wasabi, and Spicy Tuna versions of poke is piled over some warm rice, not the Hawaiian way to eat this traditional raw tuna dish but very tasty and understandbly popular.
I had the plate lunch which consisted of nicely cooked fresh rice, and presentable macaroni salad, two pieces of battered Ono (previously frozen) fish, one battered and fried boneless chicken thigh, one piece of Kal-bi (Korean barbequed short ribs). The fry job was very good, hot and not oily. The Kal-bi was delicious, smoky sweet and tender.
My quest partner had the fish and chips. Afterall this place is really a fish exporter/importer which is aptly demonstrated when going to the restrooms, passing by the cases of frozen seafood piled halfway to the ceiling. We were told that you could have the fish and chips with frozen mahi mahi for about $11 or the fresh that day mahi mahi for $15. It was my treat so obviously he ordered the fresh. We were both glad he did. The fried fish was hot and crunch on the outside but moist and flaky inside, the fish meaty and tasty, obviously fresh and just delicious. There were a generous 4 large pieces over respectable battered french fries. The tartar sauce tasted bottled but who cared, we didn’t use it since it would have been a shame with such fresh fish.
In summary, see you there next time we are in Maui. I’d go there no matter what part of Maui I was staying, it’s worth the trip.
The staff were just the nicest, happiest, friendliest bunch of folks. Happy to answer any questions, smiling all the while.
Plate Lunch Score: 9 out of 10 (one being the worst)
