“best dive on Maui”

Mike Severns Diving
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 1, 2013

This is a long overdue review for Mike Severns diving. We have taken several dives with them and they are always wonderful. We just returned from Maui and enjoyed a great day with them while we were there. Their boat is beautiful and the guides are very knowledgeable, safety oriented and fun to be with. We would not dive with anyone else on Maui but Mike Severn's.

I recently visited an Maui and did a two tank dive with the Mike Severens dive outfit. The experience was wonderful. On the way out to Molokini we stopped to check out some whale action and saw a Humpback full breach about 75 yards from the boat. Warren was our incredible dive master and took the time to do a complete briefing of the dive and what we might see. He was thorough and very personable. I hadn't done a dive (except for a quick refresher) and Warren put me at ease. Randy drove the boat and helped with gearing up. All equipment was top notch. We only have 5 divers on the boat for this trip, so we had a lot of personal attention.

The first dive was on Molokini. We sat in the boat as the sun rose over the crater rim and Warren did his briefing--simply amazing. We saw a about 7 White Tipped Reef sharks right under the boat. The coral was amazing and we also saw Morays, a Green Lion fish and lots more. Visibility was incredible. The second dive was the Tank and Landing Craft which was a man-made reef from old WWII gear. We saw a Spotted Eagle Ray and lots of other fish.

This outfit was highly rated in the Maui Revealed guidebook and here on Trip Advisor and did not disappoint.

We had a very nice dive experience with Mike Severn. Everyone was super nice and helpful. The predive briefings were excellent. We liked that we were one of the first to get out to Molokini, so we got a good spot. One the way to the second dive spot, we stopped and watched some whales, it was great. Make sure you have a big enough dry bag, as they don't have a dry storage on board.

My special lady and I made a quick trip to South Maui and wanted to do some diving. We scoured TripAdvisor reviews, called some other places, and didn't find any shops that seemed to stand out. Thankfully, we were referred by another shop -- something that speaks volumes on its own -- to Mike Severns Diving.

We did two 2-tank dives and couldn't have been happier. There were lots of reasons for this:

1. They're a safe outfit. We've dived with others that weren't close. Quality gear, well-maintained, and full-service -- led by seasoned dive masters. Integrated dive computers with all rentals make safety easy to monitor.

2. They have a great ascent policy, dividing divers into (small) groups based on experience (no newbies mixed with the mer-people), and limiting bottom times based only on safety profiles and remaining air. If you come with a buddy, and you have to ascend early, you know who to blame -- and it isn't the dive master. Individuals, on the other hand, can hang out as long as is safe.

3. The dive sites are chosen the morning of the dive, ensuring relatively peaceful rides and great vis.

4. The briefings are thorough and full of interesting information about what you're going to see, including behaviors and seasonal variations. The diversity of marine life we encountered (sharks, squid, octopus, all sorts of reef fish, turtles, etc.) was awesome, and we learned a ton about it before and after we were in the water.

5. Whales all over the place, including nice serenades while you dive and wonderful stops to check out interesting pods en route to dive sites.

6. Fresh-baked cookies and sticky buns. Don't eat breakfast before you go. Seriously.

7. We were staying in Makena, and they left from the Kihei boat launch!

There's no dive shop, but we didn't notice. Not enough good things to say. We'll be back. Hopefully soon.

(And Captain Andy has great taste in onion rings.)

We enjoyed two days of diving with Mike Severn. Pauline was one of the best dive guides I have ever dove with. They were all very good about moving at our pace and very good at spotting critters. Got one comment complaining about my equipment but otherwise a great operation, and fabulous snacks.
