I have nothing but great things to say about South Pacific Kayaks and the morning we spent doing the South Shore Explorer trip on sat. Sep 21st guided by Dan. We started the day at the beautiful bay known as Makena Landing where we showed up to learn that we really lucked out, learning we were the only couple scheduled that day. Dan already had the kayak ready to launch and combined with us being experienced kayak owners ourselves plus having our own snorkel gear meant that we wasted no time getting out on the water after his quick safety briefing.

We paddled up the coast to our first destination, offshore from Chang’s beach where we dropped anchor for the first snorkel session. We saw many colorful fish, lots of corals and several sea turtles here. Nest we headed south to the second destination known as 5-caves 5-graves where Dan proceeded to show us the underwater caves, again surrounded by lots of fish, corals and turtles as well as several scuba divers who were exploring the caves beneath us. We then paddled back to Makena Bay where again we saw more turtles than we could count, sometimes in groups of three or four at a time. After we had our fill of snorkeling, we returned to Makena landing and had a great sandwich lunch while sitting under the trees on a shady rock outcropping enjoying the exquisite Makena scenery.

It was an absolutely fantastic day blessed with a gorgeous blue sky to paddle under and crystal clear water at all three snorkel sites. Most of all though what made this such a great trip was our guide Dan who went above and beyond to make sure we had fun. Unlike other trips we’ve done where a dis-interested guide acts like he doesn’t want to be there, Dan was clearly enjoying the day as much as we were. He was alongside us all the way, describing the scenery, talking about life on Maui and snorkeling with us. Both above and below the water Dan took pictures of us on my waterproof camera so we could remember the day and several times he dove down to bring up unusual sea creatures from the depths to show us up close.

Having used other outfitters on Maui in the past I’m happy to say we will be sticking with South Pacific for our future trips and I have no reservations recommending them to others. Besides the organized trips they also offer simple rentals as well for those already experienced. That may very well be a good choice for some folks but having a guide like Dan makes the organized trip well worth the cost in my opinion.

This is a terrific way to experience the wonders of the waters, reefs and sea life off Maui. Our guide, Garret, was highly professional and engaging all at the same time. He took the time to give us a safety and equipment briefing on our kayaks and snorkeling gear. We had a beautiful paddle out to the reefs and, fortunately, the water had great visibility the day we went out. Garret helped us to look for and identify a myriad of sea creatures, including gigantic sea turtles, moray eels and numerous fish. Then, we took a short paddle to the five caves reef and snorkeled a second time. I can not recommend this operation and guide more sincerely. I was specially grateful for the intimate size of the group and that we were advised to begin our adventure early in the morning. As we were leaving, three larger boats pulled up and disgorged about a hundred people onto the reef. What a zoo! We will definitely be back and look forward to exploring with Garret.

My sister and I were looking online for kayak/snorkeling and this one had the best itinerary and price. We had a very relaxing morning in the water by the west Maui hills with guide Steve. Steve seemed a bit gruff at first, but once we were on the water his passion and knowledge was terrific. He jumped right in the water with us, gave a "tour" of the reef pointing out fish species, types of coral. All in all a relaxing, informative tour- and Steve really is the genuine article, who knows his stuff and these waters, and cannot help but share his information and passion. Thanks for a nice morning!

My wife and I booked the "Pali Sea Cliffs" tour. But the wind and waves were too much there so our guide suggested we go down by Makena Landing. What a great decision. It was awesome. Even with a little spawning by the coral the visibility was very good and the kayaking and snorkeling were great. Our guide, DAN, was awesome. He was able to get us to places that were uncrowded and with great reefs. Of course we saw turtles, too many to count, but we also got to experience several schools of different kinds of fish, an awesome variety of different kinds of coral, an eel or two and even a few barracuda.
Even with a broken toe, that made him a one fin snorkeler, and a crunched finger from preparing for our morning trip, our guide Dan, was very instrumental in making sure he made the best of our trip. And what an experience it was.
I would suggest to everybody to book with South Pacific Kayaks instead of going with one of the crowded boats to snorkel sites, (which we did on this trip to Molokini). It is so much more fun to kayak to the spots and easier than we thought getting in and out of the water from the kayak. (I am 57 and my wife is 59 years old)
We will surely be booking with South Pacific Kayaks next year during our annual trip to Maui.
A BIG thank you to Dan and the rest of you at South Pacific Kayaks for a great time and we look forward to seeing you next year.

We chose to do this at 7am on our first day in Maui. Definitely a good time to go out as the surf was quiet and the weather was beautiful. Our guide Steve was awesome. Not only did he bring us to an awesome spot with a ton of turtles and fish, but he taught us all about them, too. He had cool stories about Maui and even gave advice on some other things to do. There were a few other companies with tours there, but ours was a smaller group which made it more enjoyable. We were also the first in the water. My girlfriend and I absolutely loved this tour and would certainly do it again, hopefully with Steve. Well worth the money.
