I did the afternoon snorkel cruise, which for $36 (online) with snorkel rental and soft drinks/beer/wine is a good deal, I'd say. You're almost certainly not making it to Molokini, but just sit back, and enjoy the ride, then the snorkeling. For something like an extra $6, you get what, in practice, is an all you can eat bbq lunch.

It's a nice boat, with plenty of space inside and out. Captain John is entertaining, too. The only negative is that they need to ease up on the sales pitches. Via the P.A. system, they try to sell you SNUBA, camera rental, DVD still shot purchases, a DVD movie of the day, wetsuits, and probably some other stuff that I tuned out. It's just a bit much. I still give an "Excellent" rating because of what a pleasant afternoon you can make of it.

We went on the AM Molokini snorkel trip on the Four Winds II on our 2nd day on Maui (reserved online the week before and got a pretty good deal, too). The check-in process was smooth and fast, and they had lots of bagels, fruit, coffee and juice readily available nearly all the way to the snorkel site (also beer and wine, as soon as the clock struck 8am!).

The staff was very friendly and laid-back, they explained the process well and got us in and out of the water without much crowding and fuss. The snorkeling itself was pretty great, the water was so clean and blue and there were so many fish that it felt like swimming in a pristinely maintained aquarium! It was pretty crowded in the water with all the other snorkel boats in the area, but we managed to have a good time and see lots of interesting, colorful fish up REAL close.

While we swam, the crew grilled, and there were unlimited burgers, chicken sandwiches, veggie burgers, and hot dogs (with all the trimmings), plus all the soda/beer/wine you can drink. On the way back to the harbor, we sailed closer to the island for lots of good photo ops, and got to see a few sea turtles swimming around (we didn't swim with them, just took pictures).

After having a few more days around Maui, we realized that the snorkeling is pretty great almost everywhere - we saw just as many fish (and eels and turtles) in front of the Sheraton for free. BUT, overall it was a nice trip - beatuiful day for a boat ride, lots of great food, etc. I'm glad we did it! Would we do it again? Probably not. But, I'd recommend everyone try it once!

We recently went on the Four Winds II for a snorkel and it was truely the highlight of our trip. The crew was wonderful and the food was great. We got to see sea turtles, swim with tons of fish and Captain John was so funny and fun. I would recommend the trip to everyone.

I reserved a "Four Winds II Afternoon Snorkel Whalewatch" (their title, not mine). If they had titled it an afternoon snorkel, they would have been closer to the truth. If they called it an afternoon of sales pitches for still photographs, video, alcohol, wet suit rentals, snuba gear, scuba gear, an hour of snorkeling at "Coral Gardens" and if we see a whale on the way back to the dock it'll be a miracle, that would be ACTUAL reality.

I think I would have rather paid more up front than to pay individually for admission, lunch, wet suits, etc. At least we could have spent more time having fun and less time listening to constant commercials for additional items. Also, finding a videographer with actual people skills might help. I mean, if that is how you make your living, I would refrain from irritating potential customers.

Most significantly, it advertised a WHALEWATCH. I got the distinct impression that no one had any plans to actually look for whales. We sailed out from the coast MAYBE ten minutes, never got NEAR the place that whales hang out and were told, basically, oh well. All I can say is, false advertising may get that first sale, but it won't earn loyalty, word-of-mouth referrals or return business.

By the way, we were told to bring a swimsuit and sunscreen. My advice - bring a jacket and long pants. If there is no sun, which is a GOOD possibility in Maui, it is COLD and EXTREMELY WINDY. A swimsuit and sunscreen just isn't going to cut it.
