“Great start to the day..everyday!”
Reviewed May 16, 2013

we were excited to find out we had a daily buffet included in our hotel stay (score!)
We never had to wait for a table and the servers went above and beyond. Thomas and Russell were by far the best. Offered lots of advice on places to go and see while on our vacation.

Lots of choices everyday and all displayed very nicely. you did have to fend off birds on a regular basis but this is pretty common with outdoor seating anywhere in Hawaii.

The fruits were phenomenal and the interesting waffle and pancake combos were fun!

Glad we were able to eat here for a week. Never a disappointment!

“Breakfast at Makena Beach & Golf Resort”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

The food quality was standard hotel buffet with lots of options including miso soup and all the normal western breakfast items. I would have liked more local foods.
If you are staying at the resort, the breakfast package can be a bargain. It's hard to pass up even if you don't regularly eat a big breakfast. I planned to go out and snorkel, kayak, exercise etc early each morning, then have an 11:00 brunch. On the days we did that it worked well, but we got a little lazy by the end of the trip and started going down to breakfast first. If we had just eaten lightly, that would have been fine, but there was always enough to tempt me into eating more.
Breakfast buffet included in our nightly rate was listed at the restaurant as $26 per person. The rate included gratuity as well, so nothing to do but sign each day. We would not have done this big breakfast each day if it wasn't part of our package, but since it was, we regularly ate too much! We enjoyed the breakfast, with plenty of standard choices including made-to-order omelets. There was always plenty of fruit and salad, too, which helped me keep it a little healthier, but I would like to have had more local fruit… apple bananas! And with no seafood choices, it really wasn’t a $26 breakfast.
It was a lovely indoor/outdoor setting with gardens and fountains and the little redhead cardinals hoping for a bite. No view of the ocean here, though and it was pretty windy outside. We learned quickly to bring a jacket. Service was fine, but it was really only being seated and served coffee. We usually tip well, but didn't feel the need to add to the stated "gratuity included" on our bill.
So if you get a good deal on the breakfast included package, and you like to eat a big breakfast every morning, or if you have better self control than I do, breakfast here is worthwhile. They say the breakfast package is worth $60/day and if I could get the room rate for $60 less I would happily eat local fruit on my lanai each morning instead. But I doubt that such a rate is available.

“Only worth the price if it is included with your room”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

$25 for the buffet and diffident service added up to a less than wonderful breakfast. Nice setting with the koi and birds hoping for treats but the buffet options seemed fairly pedestrian for Hawaii.
The highlight was fresh ripe papaya and the lowlight was the "guava" juice that tasted like one of those corn syrup based mixes from the mainland.

“An abundant variety of excellent food every morning”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

Had breakfast every day and never disappointing. Fresh fruits, meats, perfectly cooked bacon, and awesome coffee! The people who made the omlets to order always did them perfectly.

Was it pricey? A bit, but you would drop half that amount at an average diner, instead you pay a little more and feasted on top of the line fresh delicious food.

“A "civilized" breakfast, in pleasant surroundings”
Reviewed June 13, 2012

In late March, we enjoyed 7 consecutive breakfasts here, as they were included with the price of our room (gratuity INCLUDED - as was the Resort Fee), so was a great deal. We had previously stayed in this hotel back in 2002, and while not much has changed in the Cafe since then, there was no reason to change it. The koi pond, at your side at some tables, and adjoining beautifully landscaped courtyards, added to the experience. The only thing missing was an ocean view.
The buffet had all the usual choices, and there was a good variety. The omelette station was popular, for good reason. Servers were, for the most part, very gracious, friendly and helpful (1 fellow seemed to be wishing he was somewhere else, but the rest were great).
While most guests took the buffet, off the menu ordering was available. Fussy eaters may not be fans of buffets, but it was fast, good, and we ate enough that we never had to take time to eat lunch later!
Usually, we would not eat at the same place 7 days in a row, but "the price was right", the surroundings were very pleasant, and we were not disappointed. We plan to return!
