Owner description: We combine an island tour with a photography workshop. While driving we talk about camera operations, image design, and composition. We help people learn how to use the rule of thirds, framing, lines of repetition, s-curves in order to create stunning landscape portraits rather than typical vacation happy snappies. We cater to individuals and small groups.

I love photography and taking pictures on Maui is any photographers dream, whether you are an amateur or a professional. During our recent trip to Maui I decided to take a photo tour with Doug Hoffman. My 13 year old son joined us on the tour as well. My goal was to get some great beach shots, and Doug took us around to 6 or 7 different locations in south Maui during our 5 hour workshop. I discovered beaches that I didn't know existed. During the drive Doug discussed important techniques for great landscape shots. He worked with me to get my camera doing what is was supposed to do and taught me some new ways to set my exposure to get the best shot. He was always on the look out for great photo opportunities, even including some great reflective shots in water. My son and I both thoroughly enjoyed our time with Doug and we came away with some great shots and more information under our belts to use in the future.

As an intermediate photographer with a passion to learn landscape photography I wanted to combine a photo learning experience with a family trip to Maui. The challenge, find a teacher who is knowledgeable, passionate, accomplished and can teach. I found all that and more in Douglas Hoffman of Maui Photo Tours.

Doug more than delivered in every respect. He has a way of challenging you to always look for those elements that make a successful image. Throughout the workshop he emphasized a number of landscape photography theories and how important reading the light was to composition.

This review would be incomplete if I did not discuss Doug's coaching technique. At each location he challenged me to look at the scene and compose the image in my head. He then allowed me the time to compose and set up the shot. While shooting the image he would check on me and offer suggestions when he felt they were necessary. Before we would leave a location he would review the images on my camera to be sure I had achieved my goal of at least one workable image from each stop. I was fortunate enough to leave each location with many useable shots. In fact. I have some images that I know would not have been possible without Doug's coaching.

They say "proof is in the pudding" and I would agree. The night after my photo workshop with Doug I went to Secret Beach for sunset. Using the theories and concepts Doug taught me I was able to capture that Sunset portrait that I always dreamed of. Yes the light, clouds and ocean all played a major role in the image. But, it was Doug's teaching that allowed me to recognize them, understand them and ultimately compose them all together and capture the image in the camera.

If improving your photography skills is your goal, I highly recommend spending time with Doug Hoffman.

I was on Maui for my 40th birthday, and as if that wasn't enough, I got to take 4 hours and drive a good portion of the road to Hana and a few other spots with Doug of Maui Photo Tours. He is very friendly, tells great stories, and was full of advice and information on framing my photos, going for different angles, etc. Doug is not just a guy who likes to take pictures who drives you around to different spots, he is professional photographer sharing his knowledge and experience as you go. Yet, I didn't feel like a total "newb" being with him. He was complimentary and encouraging. We would find a good spot for some photos and get everything together, then Doug would show me what he would go for in the shot, and talk to me about any tips specific for what we were shooting, ie. sugar cane forest, waterfall, moon over the ocean. He would stick close and work with me a little, and then we would do our own thing in the location for a bit too. When it seemed we had gotten what we wanted there, we'd hop back in the van and go in search of the next spot. It was a lot of fun, very informative, and gave me far better Maui pics than I would have had otherwise. AND his advice has come back to me several times as I've traveled and taken photos since. If you have the time and want to give your photography a boost, I highly recommend it!

I could not decide between the sunrise or sunset tours, so I signed up to take an all-day (15 hour) private photo tour with Doug on July 8th. I have taken online photo courses as well as read a number of photography books, but I was really looking for guidance to take my photography to the next level. Doug was a great coach throughout the day challenging me to always look for the keys to a successful photo prior to even taking a single picture. By the end of the day, we were both seeing the same photo elements popping out of the landscape as we moved along – this was the most rewarding part of the entire experience.

I ended up with a number of shots that I would not have even thought of taking without Doug's coaching. I was so excited about the gorgeous shots I had gotten that I ended up staying up for several more hours to process and send to friends and family back in Iowa.

If you want great Maui scenery photo opportunities, you can find them everywhere on the island. If you also want to become a better photographer, I highly recommend taking a private photo tour with Doug.
