On several occasions, I watched people in outrigger canoes at the Lanikai beach. This was finally my chance to go out and it was fun. We got a little information about the fish ponds and about Hawaiian culture, but most of the time was just paddling. We surfed some waves in and also paddled into some waves going out. We did end up getting out of the canoe into waist high water, so be prepared to get wet. The guide did a lot of chanting in Hawaiian both before the
canoe trip and during it. Some people found that interesting; I must confess I found it annoying after a while. I didn't understand the words and I would have preferred to contemplate the beauty and tranquility of being on the ocean.

This was an amazing opportunity to learn about Hawaiian culture and learn about how fish ponds played a key role. Being in the canoe was fantastic and had wonderful views of the Maui coast. We also had an up close encounter with a green sea turtle. Lastly our two guides were performers in the amazing Maui performance Ulalena which we had just seen the night before so it as extra special. Support this great nonprofit and have a great time...

Truly a great experience! This is a morning excursion, and it works by providing a donation to this non-profit organization, which focuses on preservation of Hawaiian culture thru preservation of the fishpond ("revitalizing a wall, revitalizing a culture"). Our family of four adults (not teens, but certainly appropriate) met our guide on the beach by the fishpond at 8 am, and he started by providing background on traditional Hawaiian appreciation of the land and sustainability. He was great! We then launched the canoe (yes, the four of us with our guide), got in, and started paddling. We participated in some Hwaiian chants as we paddled, caught a few waves, and helped to seed the fishpond with specific types of seaweed that are attractive to certain fish. We were back on the beach by 9:30. We got a workout (although our guide did a lot of the work), learned a lot, and helped a good cause. Highly recommend!

A donation ($ amount determined by Fishpond ) per person is made through PayPal prior to booking. The best $ you will spend on Maui as it all goes to a good cause! A maximum of 5 people can go out on the outrigger canoe with the guide. I highly recommend this activity! Skip the luau and do this!

Want to learn a bit about Hawaiian culture AND paddle an outrigger canoe (no experience necessary)? This activity is for you. We first learned a bit about how ancient Hawaiians corralled and nurtured ocean fish here in what is an original fish farm! Then our guide, Kimokeo Kapahulehua, showed us the work this organization is doing to restore the lava rock walls of this ancient Hawaiian fish pond site. Finally, the three of us paddled out a ways in an outrigger canoe to view the second ring of the fishpond. I can't say enough good things about Kimokeo's expertise about Hawaiian culture AND about his gentle manner and patience with us, two canoeing clutzes. Kimokeo is also a major outrigger canoe expert (next year he and 13 others will paddle a double outrigger from Hawaii to Tahiti -- a mere 2000 miles away - to reenact ancient Polynesian canoeing skills!!). And he has some awesome tattoos of his Hawaiian "totem," the sea turtle. Check it out!
