“Aloha! Maui Schooner Love it Love it Love it!”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

My wife, and two children have been staying at the Maui Schooner for seven years now and love the location of the resort, how quite it is and how accommodating the staff are. I've never seen grounds that are more finely manicured in my life! There are several bar B Ques available, the beach chairs and cooler in the room are a nice touch. I am impressed that they are continuously upgrading and maintaining the resort. I would recommend the Maui Schooner to ANYONE!

We've now been at the Maui Schooner three times on a timeshare exchange - it's never our first choice but it's consistently the first place on Maui where we get confirmed. We've now been in the A building once (great ocean views) and the B building twice (partial ocean views at best). The grounds are decent; the pool area is OK, but it's a short walk (less than 5 minutes) to the beach and there are tennis courts and lots to see and do in Maui. This time we discovered a little mentioned and wonderful place to visit - the NOAA Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Center Visitor Center at 10 minute walk down South Kihei Road. Lots of restaurants and shopping nearby. Wonderful staff. Lacks a fitness center though there are discounts at some that are nearby (still not as good as having one on-site and I never went as a result).

Room Tip: Top floor rooms in B Building have an open loft with the master bedroom. We didn't want that wi...

We banked our 2BDR week through Trading Places in San Diego. We called way ahead to get a QUIET unit. They said they can only assign us at the hour we arrive (1st-come-1st-serve, like a hotel). We stressed so bad, that by the time we got in, it was 6PM, as they closed the office. We got the last/worst unit B205 (next to noisy elevator, and next to the construction project 7:45am-4:30pm hydraulics). we told the lady at check-in that it is our 43rd wedding anniv. No use. No sample shampoo. Bedrooms are by the elevator hallway and the yard with the heavy diesel equipment. Cannot sleep in either BDrms. Construction goes Saturday, Sunday!! Trying to rest on the sofa at 10am... balcony faces the pool with yelling children for 6 hours... Signs are posted all over "Quiet - guests resting" --- HOW ? Wife has HAD it... wants OUT ! All hotels are full. We drag one mattress into the livingroom so we can rest til 0830 (like camping). That helped. But we came to RELAX. That means, easy mornings.
NO - - jackhammering, kids yelling, and gardeners' weed-eaters screaming for hours...all at the same time. I could not be heard. Then we see a posting in the elevator, saying Wed+Thurs is a good day to be away. We only could tolerate 2 out of 7 days. And Trading Places manages this resort. Their web site should disclose these events, so we would decline this trade. AND LATE checkout = $100/hr.
The kitchen was fine. 5 out of 6 pillows were too stiff... causing stiff neck.
What WAS nice at this place ? Breezy. Parking. WiFi. Walk to beach. That's about it. Will NOT be back.
Management - TELL contractors NO WORK on weekends. And a Sign at the Pool "QUIET...Guests resting", and pool hours 10am-8pm. THEN, you will have an Average resort. Just listen to your customers. We do the trading.

Room Tip: Building-A. Get out by 08:00 and back at 8pm...like a hotel. This is NOT for R&R. Bring shampoo.

My first stay at the Maui Schooner was great. Can't beat the location. We lucked out and got a unit in the oceanfront A building, top floor. We are owners but we exchanged in for our first visit. Checkin was smooth and the staff was great, top notch.

The units and grounds were all kept up nicely. A small remodel was just completed and there are now granite countertops in the kitchen and bath. Everything you need is in the kitchen, even sharp knives.

We will be returning and I know some friends will want to come too.

Maui Schooner is located just north of the commercial strip on S Kihei Rd. It is cheek by jowl with other similar resorts on the street, but the grounds are lovely and the tropical flower garden is beautiful. We were here for 4 weeks, in a ground-level two-bedroom unit in the B building (no ocean view) but both bedrooms were enclosed, not a loft situation like other reviews have described.

Unfortunately we were here when they were resurfacing the pool deck, trimming trees, replacing sidewalks, and still all the while doing general garden maintenance, so it was very, very noisy. We are the types who like to get up late-ish, drink coffee, read the paper, and then head out to see the sights around noon. Here you had to be out the door by 8:15 or the noise level was unbearable. It stopped by about 4 pm. It is too bad they scheduled so much maintenance all at once, especially over Thanksgiving week.

The unit itself was compact but nicely furnished and the kitchen was very well equipped. Both bedrooms and the living room have flat screen tv’s and individual room air conditioners. The patio stretched the entire width of the unit. The pool is small and the water is a little chilly, but the spa is hot and a good size. There is a welcome breakfast Sat Sun and Mon to introduce guests to Maui activities (I didn’t go). The front desk is only open till 6 pm but there is a security staff who can help out after hours if you need him.

I had exchanges from 4 different sources and the front desk was so helpful in getting me the same unit for our entire stay so that we didn’t have to move. This is an “old-fashioned” resort that expects guests to take out their trash, tidy up a little and run the dishwasher before check-out, and that is fine with me. Check-out at 10 am is a little early for us but I guess it meets the needs of Housekeeping. Other reviewers have mentioned the nagging element attached to check-out expectations, but we didn’t experience it. We also weren’t expected to pay for paper towels, toilet paper, etc., as mentioned in another review.

The resort is well located to enjoy South Maui beaches and shopping in Kahului, and not a very far drive to Lahaina and Ka’anapali. Maui Schooner does charge an energy surcharge and hotel tax, which worked out to just over $10 a day. Wifi routers were in each unit, making for a strong signal, and wifi was free. I will probably be back here sometime soon, but I will likely ask about extraordinary maintenance plans before choosing my weeks.

Room Tip: The A building has ocean views but is reserved for timeshare owners. The ground floor units have goo...

We really enjoy the schooner, we come yearly now, The end of Oct it was kind of breezy every afternoon and evening with the tradewinds. We stayed in A bldg. and walked to the sunset every evening. 4th Friday events in kihei were great, music and food. We were there just before Halloween so every one was in a dress up mode. Really had no issues with the schooner, nice remodel, beach chairs and cooler in condo used daily, enjoy the BBQ grills. lots of pool time, very comfortable and relaxing. Daily trip to Ululani's for shaved ice, the water this time of year calls for early days for snorkeling and water events. Also ziplines with flying Hawaiian was perfect day. Would like to see at least once mid week for housekeeping to come in and clean and change linens. Will bring macaroni salad to owners meeting again next time. Thanks to Nancy and staff, place was very clean, and kept nice.

Room Tip: If in B bldg the walk out floors on are convienient pool.

We stayed here the second week of September after a trade into the resort. I had read some mixed reviews of the resort and was prepared for a so-so experience. We were checked in quickly, provided tips about the resort and directed to our ground floor, one bedroom unit in the "B" building...Kudos to the management for the smooth experience! Our unit was clean and obviously one of the recent remodels. We looked out over the pool which was clean, quiet and surrounded by a well tended garden area. The beach here is not a great beach but there are plenty of great beaches as you head south...10-15 minutes driving in Kihei traffic puts you at some of the really nice beaches. The real question is would we stay here again? Absolutely! Hard to beat clean, quiet and pleasant surroundings...
