We did the bird watching with Explore Maui Nature.
It was almost 8 hours of activity, but I would say that almost 5h were just inside the car.
It was too expensive for just a couple hours of watching birds.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I’m truly sorry to hear that you were disappointed. Sadly, our native honeycreepers have been decimated by avian malaria, carried by mosquitoes, and we have to drive above the mosquito line to find them—an unfortunately incompressible amount of driving time. We also drive to the summit of Haleakala for a chance at finding Nene, Pueo, and/or Chukars. Our efforts are sometimes unrewarded, as wildlife has a will of its own, but we feel it is our role as birding guides to at least try to find them for you.

As for our rates, they simply reflect the astronomical cost it takes to run a permitted tour in a National Park and on Maui, and the extremely sharp increase in costs of doing business, as well as livable wages for our guides, consistent contributions to local environmental organizations, and higher quality local & organic food for our picnic lunches. We also limit the number of participants to 8 instead of the 11 we can fit in our vehicle. All these efforts to provide superior service and a unique experience come at a cost that we have no choice but to share with our guests if we are to remain in business. Our rates are roughly aligned with the state's official transport rates and many regular tour companies that cram up to 24 passengers in their vehicle.

This being said, I am very sorry that the trip fell short of your expectations, but we are grateful for the opportunity to improve—we will do our best to give more detailed information in our pre-tour communication, and we will always strive to spend as much time as the day allows at the viewing spots. Mahalo nui loa!

We did a private tour to Haleakala Crater and Ioa valley and it was one of the best tours we've ever been on. Wendy was our tour guide and she was absolutely incredible. We were traveling with young kids and Wendy was extremely accommodating and patient and kept the kids engaged the entire time. Wendy made our tour perfect and was Laser focused on all of our needs from the ride up the windy road to Haleakala to providing snacks and water and refreshments throughout the 8 hour tour.

We recommend explore Maui nature specifically Wendy with the highest level of enthusiasm and without any reservations.

If you want to see Haleakala or Ioa valley or any other places in maui, you have to reserve a private tour with explore Maui nature !!!!!

We had a super knowledgeable guide, Wendy, who shared not only fascinating facts about birds but also the history of Hawaii. Beautiful stops on tour and we saw 20 species of birds, including the Hawaiian nene, the Apapane and the I’iwiw. Unforgettable views and sounds. Would highly recommend even for amateur birders .

We hired Explore Maui Nature for a birding and natural history tour. It was super-great, though we are not avid birders. Hawaii has a mostly-isolated ecosystem with unique birds, so the story of its birds are the story of natural migration via wings, water, and wind. Polynesian and European migration and trade also changed evolution on the island.

Wendy, our tour guide, was a former Maui Haleakala National Park ranger, who first sang a song about our tour (hilarious), then provided many interesting facts and anecdotes about Maui, Hawaii, volcanism, evolution, and, of course, birds. I was entranced by her thoughtful descriptions, and her wide-ranging knowledge. We saw many bird species unique to Hawaii, and learned how the environment impacts them.

Though I have been to Maui many times, this tour has changed how I think about wetlands and birds. I can now identify many bird species, and I understand how they eat, reproduce, and otherwise interact with their environment.

I loved this tour. I'm now recommending it to my visiting friends.
