“Low Key, Friendly, Quiet”
Reviewed June 29, 2012

Cottages at the Nona Lani are quiet, clean, comfortable and private - and surprisingly affordable. The kitchen has everything you need to cook simple meals. You can also cook outside. The ocean is right across the street - and although the street can be busy during certain times of the day - you can definitely walk to the ocean. The gardens surrounding the cottages are wonderful, and we saw a jungle moa (wild Hawiian chicken - recently reintroduced to Maui), which made our stay perfect. All of Maui is accessible from Kihei, but it's worth going to the Nona Lani just to sit in the shade and look at the palms waving in the wind. The Nona Lani is owned and managed by the family - there is nothing impersonal about this place.

Room Tip: We've stayed at two of the cottages and both were wonderful. It's a very small place and th...

Aloha 1959Rambler,

What a lovely thing to say that there is nothing impersonal about Nona Lani Cottages... we certainly try our best to make the cottages, the grounds and our service the low key and friendly place that will create happy travel memories for our guests.

Mahalo for the time you took to write about your memories of the ocean close by and the palms waving in the wind. We sensed you got a moment to breathe in and breathe out with a wonder-filled "Aaaaahhhhh...".

We would love to take all the credit, but we know the weather, the lush grounds, and yes, "Henny-Penny", our wild hawaiian hen did most of the work. Now if we could just make her give us some fresh eggs!

Sincerely,

Cherlyn Kong

We spent eight nights at Nona Lani cottages in April 2012 and really enjoyed it. We were traveling with our 4-year old son and 9-month old baby. We found it to be a very low key, family-oriented spot that made a great base to explore Maui. Everyone who works there is super accommodating and genuinely wants to make your stay perfect.

The cottages are cozy and comfortable, and our son enjoyed exploring the surrounding gardens. We enjoyed most meals on our lanai and found it to be very private. We took advantage of the coin-op laundry and then hung our laundry out to dry on the communal clothes line.

The beach is just across the road and grocery and drug stores are just a short drive away. We would definitely stay here again, it's a great alternative to the run-of-the-mill condo complexes and we felt like we experienced true Hawaiian hospitality.

Room Tip: We really liked cottage #8, tucked away in the back corner and quite private.

Aloha rachelmiura for sharing your lovely thoughts about Nona Lani Cottages. I know it has been a while since we were able to post "Mahalo's" to all who take the time to leave a message, including yours. We have been busy bees at Nona Lani Cottages making renovations to the buildings, infrastructure and grounds, and welcoming new members to our team and so we apologize for not responding in a timely fashion here at TripAdvisor's review site.

We certainly loved hearing that Nona Lani Cottages was a great base camp to see the rest of Maui from. It is definitely located just at the right spot to get to the North, South, and West quite easily from. You made everything sound so wonderful that I want to vacation at Nona Lani Cottages!

For us, the most important idea you shared with the world of travelers is that you felt we shared old fashioned hospitality with you and your family. We cannot tell you how much we appreciate you choosing Nona Lani Cottages to create your family memories of happy traveling!

We look forward to your return with your children as they grow up and call Nona Lani Cottages their "home away from home". We can't wait to introduce the new children's gardening classes in Summer of 2013!

Our stay at Nona Lani Cottages could not have been better. We wanted a comfortable place to just be ourselves and close to the outdoor beauty of Maui. The setting of the cottages across the street from the ocean and farther north in Kihei, away from the congestion of development, was perfect and relaxing. The gardens are beautiful and swinging in my own hammock under the clearest blue sky brought a sense of peace. Barbara and Cheryl were helpful when we had questions about what to see or how to do things or get places. Babara even helped us before we got there with our trip planning. The central location was convenient for getting to other spots on Maui. We wish we could have stayed longer! There are not many places we want to go back to, but this would be one of them.

Room Tip: We would recommend the cottages in the middle of the garden as they are more quiet. Kihei Road is v...

Aloha LarkinsDubuque_IA !

Mahalo for your time to mention how our staff helped make your vacation on Maui the "best getaway".

Wow, talk about pressure to top that when you return! :)

As I had just mentioned in another review response, we are so fortunate to have a great staff that welcomes guests before and during their visit. But it is so much easier for us than you think because we have a lot of "hidden advantages" our guests don't always consciously know about.

First, our guests love having "THEIR OWN little home away from home". It really does feel like you are on a special vacation, alone and away from the hustle and bustle when you don't have to share a common wall with other guests on the property. But there are other happy guests around if you enjoy meeting folks.

Then we have a magic potion called "mother nature". Because of the vast and beautiful grounds that look park like here at Nona Lani Cottages, each day our guests wake to the sounds of the birds. Then in the evening they witness the beautiful sunsets at Kong's Cove Beach.

And lastly, they really get relaxed as they tune into the lullaby of the ocean in the evening and the whole cycle of joy starts again the next day!

See, we really do have secret help. So in fairness, you make our daily work a pure joy.... We, the Nona and David Kong Sr. Family, humbly thank you for your business!

Keep in touch with us for our friends and family referral and our return guests promotions programs that we will start after this Summer.

Aloha & mahalo,

Cherlyn Kong, Mgr.

Just wonderful, the STAFF most helpful when I explained I wanted my grandsons to experience the aquarium and she managed to fit us in. The boys enjoyed the beach to the fullest,(outdoor shower the best) daughter loved whale watching and since we had arrived by ferry from Moloka'i we used public buses for it all. Enough stuff in kitchen you bet, when we showed up with coffee beans the owner's family provided us with grounds instead. The hiway traffic magically shuts off early in the evening...no worry. You WILL enjoy every minute

Room Tip: any one seems to be lovely...do your grocery shopping before arrival, kitchens are great

Aloha Sandra,

Thank you for letting readers know that our Staff is great. We pride ourselves on greeting our guests and finding out what their needs are before and during their stay with us. When you mentioned Kong's Cove Beach across the 2 lane road was used daily by your grandchildren, it brought a smile to my face as now my grandchildren are swimming and playing where I did as a child (over 50 years ago :) . Hope that when they returned to the Nona Lani grounds after the beach that they not only enjoyed the outside shower (as opposed to the indoor one), but also relaxed and had your meals at the BBQ at sunset.

Please do keep in touch as we expand our marketing and are looking forward to our rewards program for return guests like you and your family. We are so grateful for your business. We thank you for your time to write your lovely review!

Sincerely,

My husband and I decided to have our honeymoon here in November of 2011 and it was amazing. I researched MANY places to stay on Maui and this place sounded great and and great reviews. It is litterally across the street from the beach and in a fairly quiet area. Yes you can hear the cars go by but its not bad at all. When we first got there we went to check in and we got our first taste of how relaxed it is there. Our keys were actually waiting for us outside incase the owner wasn't there. She was there so we were able to talk with her and she is great. No problems with the cottage at all. The bed was comfy and the whole place was clean. There is a nice porch to hang out on and hammocks and lounge chairs for everyone. I can't say enough about how wonderful Nona Lani Cottages are. We had the ocean view and we had a beautiful view of it. The beach is very quiet and not busy at all. During the sunsets was the busiest and that was less than 10 people. We are looking forward to our next trip to Maui and we will be staying here without a doubt. Next visit will be with our child. Can't wait! Thank you Nona Lani.

Aloha Angela,

Wow, there were 10, count them TEN, whole people on the beach at Kong's Cove at sunset !!! That is busy! When you return to Maui remind me to tell you about how we as kids had the whole 1 mile beach to ourselves.

Aren't the sunsets from Kong's Cove in November wonderful? The whales were not out at the time of your visit, but it is peaceful and beautiful none the less. You actually missed the busier season and got our great secondary season rate!

We cannot thank you enough for your kind thoughts and choosing to share your special honeymoon time with us. That we are part of your memories of your beginning are special and I personally wish you a long and wonder-filled life together.

Though I have not met you personally as I am not in the office daily, I look forward to meeting you on your return. Please address an email to me personally before you arrive so I can put together some sand toys for your little one to use while here. We look forward to serving you in the future and meeting your little one!

Sincerely,

Cherlyn Kong, Mgr.

Nona Lani was dubbed a solid gold value by Maui Revealed. In the high season the cottages are 165$ to 175$ a night. They were not well equipped with kitchen utensils. It was-little shabby and they did not pay attention to details. There was no housekeeping. All of this would have been fine if the price were compatible with the facilities, The grounds were lovely and unique. The faimily who owns NonaLani was delightful. However they need to either spruce it up or drop the price

Aloha Lottridge,

Thank you for your review and for bringing to mind those things you felt were not up to par during your stay here at Nona Lani Cottages. Yes, the pricing during the Winter months is a bit higher (we see you stayed with us in Jan.) than our secondary season (April 16th through Dec. 15th). But regardless of the seasons, we know your money is hard earned and we value your opinion. On that note, we are happy to relay to the public that we are scheduling interior updates to our cottages and they should all be completed before our 2012-2013 Winter Season begins.

We are often told our gardens are the most valued asset and so we continue to maintain the tropical and relaxed grounds. As you can imagine, having only 8 cottages and maintaining gardens on over 2-1/2 acres is a financial challenge. So to offset some expenses, many years ago we reviewed with our returning guests what was important to them. One of the items of least importance to them was daily maid service. And with that, I must apologize. I looked over our website and the home page implies that you are to take care of your own daily maintenance needs (starter linens & coin-operated laundry). But it was not spelled out clearly. I know we mention that to our guests who call, but it should be posted so you can easily read that starter linens and daily care thereafter is taken care of by the guests themselves. I take responsibility for that oversight and will be updating our website within 24 hours. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

About our kitchens: We do equip them with a wide variety of small kitchen appliances and utensils and so we apologize if there was any essential appliance missing during your stay. We will take better care to inventory those items when each guest checks out. We would have loved the opportunity to serve you better had we known that something you consider essential was not in place or those items listed on our website's "Home" and "Rooms" pages were not there. We welcome any specific suggestions in how to make your next stay one that makes you feel totally at home in your own kitchen.

I thank you for your lovely comment about our family. It is so timely and appreciated as in Nov. of 2011, we suffered a major loss: the patriarch of our family, David Kong Sr. He would be proud to hear that guests make honest assessments of our business, and still take the time to say that we did a great job on the part of opening our hearts to strangers, who we hope become friends. Daddy loved his family very much and so like family, I hope you will give us another opportunity to serve you if you return to Maui. Mother is continuing (as usual) on doing a wonderful job of seeing us carry on with their tradition of "Aloha" to visitors.

Again, thank you for your spending your vacation with us, the time taken to express your thoughts, and the opportunity to serve you better in the future if allowed.

Sincerely,

Cherlyn Kong, Mgr.

P.S. Please forgive the delayed response. I have just returned from my long vacation and am now responding to the reviews posted in March.
