My husband and I visited Maui this past week and could not have asked for a better experience! If you want safety, this is it! The bikes are strong & sturdy and these guys take nothing for granted in getting you down the volcano safely. There is a guide at the front and the van/driver at the back - sandwiching you in. They communicate with eachother about vehicles waiting to pass, etc. and we pull over to the side if they need to get by. Other groups that we witnessed had a free for all down that mountain with no guides present and those people are the ones we witnessed wiping out! We had a rider from the very beginning who wasn't confident in her ability to ride so she opted for the van - the guys know if you're capable enough or not to get down safely.
I definatly recommend, although it is very early in the morning, catching the sunrise from the top of mt. haleakala. It's one of those things that will move you and shake you to your core. So beautiful!!!
We'll rave about this experience for years to come. Our driver was Darin and our guide was Rico - thank you so much for making this experience so memorable! If people can't find happiness in this adventure they don't know what true happiness is.

(bring your camera - the guys make stops on the way down allowing you to take pictures and they'll take pictures of you!)

I must admit, this "Excellent" rating is based solely on Kirk, our Cruise Leader, being a great guide! I had some general concerns with Maui Downhill, but the trip itself was fantastic. In addition to making sure all of his riders were enjoying themselves (and being SAFE), Kirk has the best information of all the guides we met while on Maui. He even took the time to show me the research he has done, and look up information for me - all the other guides just guess or make it up as they go. As for the review below titled "A waste of time and money" - it sounds like you had no clue what a "group" activity entailed and have an "it's all about me" attitude. Kirk had to stop twice on our trip due to a couple of younger riders screwing around, but he never raised his voice, or was disrespectful - and you could see he was doing his best to make sure everyone made it down safe and had a good time. Sounds like you are making excuses for your horrible behavior - shame on you!

Thanks again, Captain, you MADE our trip and we'll ask for you when we come back to Maui!

PS: I was disgusted to see people walk away without tipping! You tip when you go out to dinner, right? I would say this service is BEYOND bringing you food and drink. They got you down the volcano safely and with memories of a life time - show some aloha. If you can't afford the tip, you can't afford the trip.

This was the worst experience of our trip in Maui. I will not recommend this company to anyone, a total waste of time and money. Choose another company that allows you to ride the bike at your own pace, or better yet, skip the bike and just take the car to the summit to save yourself time, money and hassle.

My fiance and I booked our tour through the Expedia specialist in our hotel hoping to see the sunrise over the volcano and experience the adventure and freedom of riding the bikes down hill. The van picked us up at 2:45 am, about 15 minutes later than scheduled, not a big deal. They then took us to their offices where we hung out for 30 minutes and were fed muffins and coffee, and given our bike riding gear. We were then taken to the top of the volcano to see the sunrise, which was scenic, but extremely chilly.

After the sunrise our "anti-adventure" nightmare began as we started the decent down, stopping at points of interest until it was time to get on the bikes. I felt like we were back kindergarden. We were lined up by height and given a bike. We were not allowed to ride in the order we wanted, so my fiance and I were separated. We were not allowed to talk to each other and had to follow captain "A-hole" who kept stopping and pulling in every 2 minutes to yell at the kids who apparently were not following his commands. For the two adults who came to experience the adventure and enjoy themselves it was an absolute nightmare. We spent more time stopping and listening to his yelling than actually riding.

We finally got fed up with the situation, and at one of the stops where for some reason we had to get of the bikes and spend 30 minutes shopping at a local store, we decided to bail. We hitchhiked down to the bottom and caught a cab to the hotel.

This was the opposite of a good time. I would want them to pay me money to be on this tour, not the other way around. If you want to be back in kindergarden, take this tour and enjoy being yelled at by Captain A-hole. But if you are looking for adventure, just take a car to the summit and skip the bike tour. Or book with a company that allows you to use their bikes and ride at your own pace and discretion. Maui Downhill is a waste of money and time!

We did the sunrise bike tour and the staff was very friendly. It was rough to get up that early but my husband had a blast. We were very lucky to have a good group with us.
TIP - eat ahead or bring some food. The restaurant that you hit on the way down the mountain does not have very good food.

The only bad part of the day was having to wake up at 1:45 a.m. in order to be picked up at 2:15. Other than that, the trip was terrific! We were in our lobby at 2:10 a.m, and the driver was already there waiting for us, and we were the first pickup. Our van was spacious and the driver was friendly. We got to the office location at 3:30 a.m. where a light continental breakfast was served. We left the office and arrived to the top of the mountain at 5:15 a.m. As other reviewers mentioned, dress warmly! It was about 40 degrees at the top of the mountain, and we took the advice of dressing in layers (including sweatpants and gloves) - and we were warm. There was a park ranger at the top of the mountain and he was very protective of the land - it was easy to see how passionate he was about the environment and not straying from the paths. The sunrise was beautiful - the top of the mountain was above the clouds, and it was amazing to see the sunrise. After the sunrise, our driver took us to two other stops at the top of the mountain while giving a brief history of each. After the second stop, we drove down to 6,500 feet and met our guide for the biking portion. Our driver left, and our tour was led by Zep (who rode with us) and a new driver (whose name we cannot remember, but he was also nice). Zep was fantastic - as one of us hadn't biked in over 10 years, we had to disclose this - and Zep was patient and focused on safety. He made sure even the least experienced riders were capable of making to the bottom (and stressed that we could stop anytime and ride in the van instead). We made 2 stops while biking to the bottom - one for pictures and the second for a late breakfast. The ride down was almost entirely downhill and beautiful. We biked at speeds of 10 mph-23 mph (you are not allowed to participate if you go slower than 10 mph, and average speeds are 15-20 mph). The ride was very controlled by the leader of the group. The van follows the bikers in case anyone needs to stop. Our only suggestions are to dress in layers, be ready to wake up early, and bring a bottle of water and some snacks. There was a gap of about 6 hours from the time we left the office to the time that we got to the late breakfast stop.
