“Tropical paradise”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

We loved this guest house. We reserved the 1 bedroom cottage. It was perfect. leokane and Chris have thought of everything a guest would need in this remote area. The cottage is decorated in a manner that reflects it's early Hawaiian origins. We love the color palate they selected that brightens up the interior. The location feels secluded despite the fact that we were only a few miles out of town. The only drawback is the distance from the water. It is a distant view from the cottage. Otherwise this lovely spot I'd definitely recommendable.

We had a wonderful time staying at the Hale Ulu Lulu cottage for one night in April 2013. The cottage is very spacious and clean, and has a very comfortable tropical feel. Our only regret was that we did not stay longer!

Our first night we brought beach chairs and wine to nearby Hamoa beach. What a gorgeous beach! We were the last two on the beach and stayed until dusk. The next day we visited Haleakala National Park and hiked to Waimoku Falls. It was amazing and is not to be missed!

We couldn’t ask for a more romantic setting for our Hawaiian getaway. The Guest Houses at Malanai, nestled against Hana's lush tropical backdrop, are utterly charming. Our cottage was spacious, immaculate, and completely comfortable; so much better than anything a big resort could ever offer. After each full day of sightseeing (hiking at Haleakala National Park, swimming at Hamoa Beach and Venus Pool), it was a pleasure to return to our private paradise: full kitchen, comfortable bed, the works. Truly, a perfect experience. We’ll definitely be coming back next year!

The only problem we had with our recent stay at the Guest Houses at Malanai was that we only had five nights. Our cottage, tucked privately away into a lush flower filled garden, made us feel as though we had stepped back in time to an earlier romantic era. Each piece of furniture and work of art seemed to be carefully chosen by someone who somehow knew our secret Hawaiian hideaway fantasy. Our sumptuous sliegh bed with unbelievably soft sheets was seconded only by our deep soaking tub. Usually, a place with this much character tends to lack in cleanliness, however everything was sparkling and fresh. We couldn't believe how ideal the location was: overlooking the oceanfront meadows between Hamoa Beach and Venus Pool. We are already plotting our next year's return to the magical Guest Houses at Malanai.

Hale Ulu Lulu was so welcoming when we arrived that it actually had an emotional effect on me. Obviously a lot of care and love have gone into appointing and maintaining the bungalow. We spent much time just relaxing there because of the serenty and comfort that the owners have created. We also appreciated tips amd details about food, hikes and beaches. I will recommend Hale Ulu Lulu enthusiastically to everyone who wants to feel pampered in a setting of peace and natural beauty, as opposed to huge resorts with thousands of tourists.

Ah, the reality check of arriving back home to our cold and rainy clime, trying to extend the sensory paradise that we lived for our much-too-brief 2 nights at Hale Manu!

The house--where can I begin? It’s real, true Hawaii, as if someone spent a lifetime assembling the perfect guest home. Discovering all of its touches and charms takes days to appreciate. Here, a collection of Tiki Men scowling harmlessly down on us from the living room shelf. There, a charming ceramic Pineapple Tea Set. A basket filled with beach stones and coral pieces, just begging to be played with. Fresh towels with beautiful hibiscus blooms tucked into them in the bathroom under two gorgeous framed vintage Hawaiian posters. And a jacuzzi tub! Are you kidding me? What a treat after a day of body surfing at the impossibly lovely Hamoa Beach.

Two equally inviting bedrooms, each with beautiful Hawaiian quilts and furnishings. I loved the blue armoire bedroom, but the mint green one with its writing desk would be a great place to pen a novel. May I stay for a few more months, please? A kitchen designed and furnished for REAL cooking--how often do you see that in a rental house? An open living/dining area, with cool breezes from the plantation-style ceiling. Lots of lounging room. And what do we have here? A mini- deck in the back, with two picture-perfect weathered white cast iron chairs, just begging for you to sit in for your morning coffee.

My treasured yet one-dimensional photos tell only part of the story. Flat snapshots on our deck from our padded lounge chairs, surrounded by paradise, cannot relay for you readers the sound and feel and smell of the tropical wind, sometimes rustling, sometimes whooshing through the huge avocado tree in front of us and the palms around us, while the ocean changes demeanor as the day progresses. Birds chirping during the day, sweet little geckos at night. A southern sky lit with more stars than you’ve probably ever seen. Betelgeuse was sitting smack-dab in the middle while we were there, with Gemini above it--celestial paradise, too.

And the sunrise! An early morning stroll to Waioka (Venus Pool), when that magical light is reflected in its calm, safe waters, as waves crash on the rocks mere yards from you--have you ever seen such wonders? Now we have.

And why do we never hear of the drive PAST Hana? More magical, private (in the morning--before crowds appear) waterfalls than we could explore in a day, with a journey through time at the end. Palapala Ho’omau Church, Kipahulu, you captured MY soul, too.

Leokane, thank you so much for an experience of a lifetime, with your music on the last night as the absolute perfect ending to our stay. I hope we can meet again!

We stayed at Hale Ulu Lulu for 3 nights. On entering the guest house my husband was almost speechless- he kept saying this place is so cool! There is so much attention to detail here with view to your comfort. The decor is fabulous, the bed is comfortable, towels are plush etc. It was spotlessly clean on arriving and very welcoming with soft Hawaiian music playing and Hibiscus flowers placed in various locations. After the long drive to Hana these touches were very welcome. The guest house is very well equipped from kitchenware through cooking staples such as olive oil. There were even coffee beans and a grinder if you hadn't brought your own. While there we did a little hiking and also enjoyed Leokane and his fellow musicians at the Hana Travasana. We enjoyed the Hula dancers as well. We are currently staying at a spectacular location in Kauai but it doesn't have the same welcoming vibe that Hale Ulu Lulu does. I would strongly recommend staying in Hana and while there staying at The Guest Houses at Malanai
