“Great place!”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

We stayed in their ocean front room #3 for 2 nights. It was located right next to the beach and we had a wonderful view. The room was clean and comfortable. It was also very spacious and relaxing. The room has no air conditioning or tv so you can open the windows and listen to the ocean and read a book. The kitchen is set up very well as we cooked breakfast each morning and we had everything we needed. We very much enjoyed our stay. I have one complaint about our stay. We were on the 3rd floor and on the 4th floor was a family with kids. The ceiling is very thin and the noise kept us up late and we were up very early due to the floor noise. We were captive to their awake hours. If I were to go to Hana again, I would stay there again. It's like being in old Hawaii!!!

We are looking at ways to minimize the noise transfer from upper to lower floors at Hana Kai. We are constantly improving our units, our grounds and our guest experience and this issue was discussed at our annual owners meeting this past weekend. Our staff manages the property and rental business with great care and concern and our owners have shown such dedication to this property and their individual units over these past 6 years especially. This will be just another step in making Hana Kai an even better experience and value in the future. The absolute beauty of this property and location make Hana Kai a great choice, regardless. I want to note that we have only 3 floors in the oceanfront building. The ground floor is office and public area; accommodations are 1st and 2nd floor only.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom and absolutely love the place! It was exceptionally clean and the staff were always super friendly. The sound of the ocean is unbeatable and the lanai was where we spent the majority of our time. It will be an experience I will cherish for a lifetime. I will say that the building is old and the walls/floors, etc are very thin so you tend to hear other guests more during your stay or if you have children, depending on the type of guests below you, they may say it is loud. But we did not let it bother us ... it is part of the experience and expect to have extra noise when you are staying in any place with more than one rental unit.

Room Tip: If you are visiting with small children (mine were 17 month old twins), maybe choose a room on the l...

Our flight to Kahului was delayed a couple hours out of Portland, OR, so we started out on the Road to Hana in our rental car just as the sun was setting and the rain was starting to fall. It was like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride as we crawled back-and-forth 50 miles down that 1+ lane road to our destination in Hana (we drove through Paia without stopping for food, not realizing it was the last bit of civilization before Hana). By the time we pulled into the parking lot (and there was *one* parking place left), it was past 8:30, and we'd left our stomachs on the road long ago. There was a note on the office door with our key and we dragged ourselves to #205, upstairs in the closest-to-the-road building. We fell asleep as the wind howled and the surf crashed all night long. In the morning, we woke at dawn (the time-difference will do that to you) and peered out the lanai-window at a spectacular, huge, ocean-view--our first daylight glimpse of the place. Tears of joy. Three nights in Hana, such a beautiful and rare treat, eating at the excellent Thai joint across from the ball-field or at Braddah Hut's. Walks to Hasegawa Store. The Kahanu botanical garden and the O'heo Pools. We loved Hana, and we loved staying at Hana Kai Maui. Mahalo plenty, and a hui hou, we hope.

Room Tip: Second floor on the closer-to-the-road maximizes the view. The road is very quiet. There are stair...

Comfortable Condo for an overnight at Hana Bay. Lovely view, but a fair number of stairs on the grounds. We stayed for one night to break up the drive. Take food for breakfast as there is not a lot available in Hana. We wre supplied with local coffee, which was great.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a view; that's the whole point of being there. Handicapped accessi...

I just returned from a 3-night stay at the Hana Kai resort. We stayed in room 103, which had a nice but partially obstructed view of the ocean and the black rock beach in front of the hotel. The unit was a good size with a living room (with an impressively sized and very comfortable futon) a separate bedroom and bathroom and a full kitchen that was very well stocked with essentials to cook/prepare meals. We had a lovely large lanai with a full sized dining room table which was where we spen a majority of our time while in the room. The favorite part of my stay was sleeping on the comfortable futon with the sliding door open (with the screen door closed) and falling asleep with the ocean breeze blowing and the sound of the waves crashing on the beach.

The service at the hotel was good, and it was nice that they offered beach towels (as many as you needed) which you could return in various bins located around the property. It should be noted that there are no televisions in the room (no issue for us) and also don't believe there is any air conditioning (also was not at all an issue, but something to consider during the summer months). A few things to keep in mind before coming- go grocery shopping before getting on the road to Hana! While there is a general store and a few convenience stores in Hana, these should be used as a last resort as selection is extremely limited and the fresh produce sells out fast. As far as food for purchase- there are a couple of restaurants (Travaasa is nice but expensive and the Hana Ranch is quite satisfying and not at all as bad as some of the reviews would have you believe). We ate quite a few lunches at Hana Fresh, which is a tent stand that offers fresh prepared food.

Overall, I was very impressed with the Hana Kai and I would definitely stay here again on my next visit to Hana!

We just visited for two nights at the Hana Kai Maui in Unit 202 - two queen beds, one up and one down, although there were just two of us for the visit. Our lanai with teak furniture overlooked the gorgeous bay where we could watch surfers, swimmers (if they were brave enough), and we slept next to the sliding glass doors listening to the waves crashing on the beach. We probably could have walked to the very limited shopping and eating, but we had a rental car, so it was perfect. Since there is no A/C, the doors and windows are vented, and sound does carry, but it is drowned out by the ocean for the most part. Our last night we did hear little ones, but they are music to our ears missing our grandchildren back home. The units are lovely - everything you need to cook and have a wonderful time. We will definitely stay there again and recommend them to our friends. Hint: Book VERY early.

Room Tip: I would go for a top floor since sound does carry. Maybe the views are better up there, but when yo...

First of all, if you are heading to Hana, spend the night. Out and back in one day would be brutal. The area is so beautiful and relaxing. Hana Kai is in a great location on the bay with a nice view. It is very close to other good beaches and hiking. The room was very nice, clean and well equipped. The staff was very friendly. We stayed in room one an oceanfront unit. I would recommend the oceanfront rooms if available. The "backside" road from Hana was very scenic and not as scary as advertised. I would recommend taking it on the way back for variety. Echos Snack Shop between Koki Beach and Hamoa beach has the best burgers ever.

Room Tip: I would recommend the oceanfront rooms if available.
