If Your looking for somewhere that seems like "your own little place" and not some huge hotel chain, where you can cook you own meals,(Which includes a cute little rock barbecue for two of the units), and not feel like [--] when you pay the bill, you owe it to yourself to check these cute little cottages out. You have a private bedroom possibly two, a full kitchen and bathroom. Dont expect a TV, Radio, or Microwave, becaue this is what Hawaii was like before it got over commercialized. Mrs. Nakamura is a very gracious host. Just be considerate and make sure you are checked out on time, or early for the rates that they are charging are extremely reasonable, and they cannot affort to keep the rates that way if they are loosing bookings because your a slow poke. This is a place you can truely unwind at a fair price.

We stayed here, august 13th-19th. We were given a discount when arriving, (I guess because they are nice people??) and recieved a bunch of bananas and papayas on the second day. We also didn't get yelled at for not leaving on time since we left before 10:45am. I'm wondering if the people who were yelled at to leave were pushing their stay past check out time. Anyways... the only downside is that you must keep your windows open since there isn't airconditioning (it's cool enough in hana, so you really don't need airconditioner) and the one nighter guests don't understand that you can hear everything. The first night I was woken up to someone doing dishes at an ungodly hour, two other nights, days, and mornings i was woken up from couple clearing phlem from their throats, (really nasty sounding), oh yeah and one morning i was woken up to a women yelling "It's so beautiful HERE!" If you are going to stay here know that others can hear you, and would rather not.

hi there -

i am sad to report this story - my wife and i stayed at aloha cottages the last 2 nights of our stay in hawaii - i had no problem making the reservation, and found mrs nakamura a gracious host. the cottage we were in was clean and quite nice, and the location is fantastic. however, as we were still gathering bags at the checkout time of 10:45 and were not out of the room, mr nakamura began yelling and cursing at us just as the previous reviewer described, in english and in japanese (we understood.) after pounding at the door, he burst in through a back door and began stripping sheets, all the while on a violent tirade which included punching the wall. he kept shouting for us to leave immediately and to never come back. fortunately we met some other more typical hana natives while we waited at the airport - on hearing our story they said the cottages were misnamed, there seems to be no aloha there. he really was the most unpleasant person we found during 12 wonderful days on maui and kauai. if you check out early you should be fine, just be warned and give mr. n. a wide berth. we will find a friendlier place next time! -jeff m in new jersey

and as a postscript, after reading the previous review it seems this behaviour is routine! how sad! - my wife is japanese american, which didn't smooth things out a bit, it just meant she could understand the insults he threw at us. we were shaken but still had a good day.

Our recent stay at Aloha Cottages, in Hana, was marred by a bizarre incident. Check out time at Aloha Cottages is 10:45 and at precisely 10:44 on the morning of our departure date, my family and I were interrupted in our final stages of packing by the following incident. We were suddenly shocked by violent and unceasing pounding on our cottage door and intense screaming by the would be intruder. My first thought was to call the manager. After 30 years of worldwide travel, I know hotel management can react faster than most local police forces. Then I remembered there were no phones in the cottage.
Suddenly, I picked out a few words in the broken- English tirade only to realize the man was saying "You are Late, You are Late!" Thinking this must be some crazy inexperienced worker on his first day on the job, and assuring my wife and daughter that I could safely open the door, I saw that before me was an elderly gentleman who looked like he was about to burst at the seams! He jumped into the room with some cleaning supplies only to drop them and scream at me , my wife, and my daughter that we were late ( to check out)! I pointed at the clock nearby and said "It's 10:46...what are you talking about?". It didn't take me long to figure the checkout time had nothing to do with his motivation as the tirade soon moved into repetitive "You never come back again" -type commentary. Then, when I asked what could possibly be wrong, he responded by asking if I wanted to fight him! Needless to say, we hurried down to the car with our suitcases, my teenage daughter on the verge of tears, my wife and I dumbfounded. We contemplated calling the Police but decided we didn't want to ruin the rest of our Maui vacation, any more than this had done thusfar. A friend later told me that Aloha Cottages, like many of the accomodations in Hana, are not licensed , so we couldn't take the complaint to any travel association. A couple days later, I recall I mentioned to the very nice lady in the Office that my wife was from Central America. Although I sure hope I'm wrong, this is the only thing I can figure that caused the tirade. When staying in moderately priced accomodations ($100 range) in Hana, choose one of the other establishments listed on the WWW. In addition, Aloha Cottages, while clean, is on the way to being run down. There is a threadbare feel to everything. You can do better for the same price elsewhere. Oh, and be sure to check out at 10:30!
