Four Seasons Resort Lana'i, The Lodge at Koele
Ranked #2 of 3 Hotels in Lanai City
Reviewed November 8, 2012

I am familiar with other Four Season properties. Lanai is somewhat unique. On Lanai, there are two Four Season's properties, the Manele Bay down by the coast/beach and the Koele Lodge near the town in the higher elevation and bordering the golf course and forest reserve. If you like the beach and dry weather, stay at Manele. If you like the plantation style setting and cool climate, the Koele Lodge is what it is. The atmosphere at Koele is relaxing and tranquil. The food at Koele, in my opinion, is better at Koele than Manele (over the years, I've stayed at both places several times each). The service at both hotels are excellent. The golf course at Koele is very different than Manele. I prefer the Manele Bay golf course. Now, with the recent ownership change of Lanai to Oracle's Larry Ellison, the local residents and hotel workers are upbeat and encouraged with Mr. Ellison's plans to rejuvenate the island, not only with environmental issues but with "real" talks with management, staff and local residents to also establish Lanai as a niche destination. In the near future, you will see some minor improvements and changes. Down the road, you will probably see a more comprehensive resort melting both the laid back atmosphere with an eco friendly environment... one that visitors will embrace and remember.

It is difficult to put into words what it is like to spend a week at the Lodge at Koele on the Island of Lanai. The restful tranquility that one experiences will never be relinquished by your senses. It is a world of never-ending calm that cleanses the soul and rejuvenates the spirit. The untouched beauty of this Island is Mother Nature at her finest hour.

It would be hard for me to imagine that there is anyplace better, anywhere. The minute you arrive at this elegant oasis, you are treated like royalty. You see grounds tailored with impeccable definition. The air you breathe is fresh and your life is about to be transformed forever.

The rooms are well appointed, clean, and very comfortable. The food is prepared better than some of the finest restaurants on the planet. The service is unsurpassed anywhere.

There is a one time, reasonable fee for shuttle service to and from different locations on the Island. You can spend the day at the Manele Bay Hotel. Or, possible take a ferry ride to the Island of Maui. Maybe rent a four wheel drive vehicle from Dollar Rent a Car and explore the Island. You can check out the Garden of the Gods, or possibly Ship Wrecked Beach.

If you are considering a trip to the Lodge at Koele, consider no longer. JUST DO IT. You owe it to yourself. I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. If you have ANY questions, feel free to email me and I will be more than happy to help.

Hats off to the Manager and staff of this fine facility. You guys are the best.

We recently stayed here for a week to celebrate my husbands birthday. It was wonderful!
Right from the moment we got off the ferry we were treated like royalty. Everyone was so genuinely friendly. We golfed both courses and it was fantastic! There were wild turkeys everywhere and the views were to die for. We rented a jeep for the day and that was definitely worth it. We saw some beautiful, abandoned beaches. We ate at the resort and it was always great. It is pricey though, so we also ate in town and never had a bad meal. I suggest eating in town where locals eat, especially the Poki. It is great. We both had massages at the lodge but wouldn't do it again there, but at the other resort. it has a much nicer spa and is the same price. We enjoyed the beach at Manele as well. The service was awesome and they have complementary snorkel gear for you use. When we go back, and we will, we will 4 wheel drive and horseback ride as well. We just ran out of time! If you want a completely relaxing, old Hawaii, non- touristy, luxurious vacation, this is for you. NO nigh-life but pure relaxation and bliss.

Room Tip: The room was nice but outdated. However, the wonderful bed and housekeeping made up for it. Not wort...

We've just returned from our first stay here. I had read other reviews complimenting the friendly, helpful service at this resort so were unprepared for exactly how inconsistent the Customer Service was for a Four Seasons Hotel, either Bad or Good, no ’ in-between’! Some Members of staff seemed to be complacent & not interested in making sure you had a great time for example. served black coffee by Waitress, asked for Cream & was told to get it yourself, everything seemed/appeared too much trouble.

This place will absolutely blow your socks off or flip flops/thong sandals off!! If you are in to serene atmospheres, striking ambience, and simply the best accommodations you can ask for, then this place is for you! We could not have asked for a better place to spend time for our friends wedding. My wife and I took our first trip to Hawaii for a really good friends wedding and it was an absolute treasure! We loved every single thing about this place and our time spent there. Everything from the service to the breathtaking garden and its panoramic views!! Truly first class, five star, diamond service with everything they provided. Meals were really tasty, employees were super pleasant and professional, drivers were punctual and courteous. I can not say enough great things about this place. They say you get what you pay for. It may be a little pricey to most, but you definitely get every dime of what you paid for out of this place. Both Four Seasons resorts on Lanai are well worth the time and definitely the experience. Two totally different atmosphere/experiences but the same outstanding service at both. I urge you to try one of these places out or both. Those that know Four Seasons know to expect the best!!

Room Tip: Any room is a great room!! All of the views are phenomenal!!

Lana'i is for travelers seeking an authentic Hawaiian experience and are satisfied with no night life or shopping. Our "upcountry" stay was quiet, relaxing, peaceful, uninterrupted by sales people, loud music or tour buses. It is perfect for those who want to luxuriate in the cooler mountain air of Hawai'i and want to sit quietly by the pool or walk the lovely grounds.

I hired a guide with Rababca Tours (I am not sure of the name of the company, but they will recognize the name at the Lodge if you come close), Garret who hailed from Lana'i. He took me to the Garden of the Gods and Shipwreck beach. We hiked out to see petroglyphs while there. You won't find them on your own. If you choose to do this, you might want to consult with your guide ahead of time to pick the best time of day.

Don't miss the Cultural Center in Lana'i City, it is worth a bit of your time to read up on the local history. Also, have the kalua and cabbage plate lunch at Blue Ginger while you are there. Lana'i City is really a tiny little town. No malls or name brand stores...not even a Hilo Hatties or ABC store. This island is like slipping back in time to the Hawai'i of the 1950's.

Room Tip: Our room faced the stables and ocean so it was GORGEOUS, but there was a road in front of the hotel...
