“Exceptional Resort, staff, cuisine and activities”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012

Just the right opportunity to relax and not do anything or you could participate in a wide variety of activities from jeep rides, golf, croquet, snorkel, shuffle board, chess, horseback riding, and enjoying the gardens. Excellent cuisine at reort as well as the town ranging from gourmet to great local takeout i.e. Poke Market, Ginger Cafe, the Grind. Mechanic for the sister resort came to th Lodge to show us how to play croquet. Staff very friendly and went out of their way to make your stay the best. The absolute best hotel I have ever stayed in.

Room Tip: Garden view room allows you to see deer, turkeys and sheep as well.

Aloha arrowhead5m,

Mahalo for taking the time to review your stay with us. Your stay truly captured the spirt of Lanai with the perfect amounts of relaxation, adventure, cuisine and most importantly comfort. From the incredible golf, snorkeling and 4x4 off-road adventure, there is an abundance of activity to experience, however it's also nice to relax and do nothing as you pointed out. Glad you found the perfect balance. Thanks for your great comments regarding our friendly and attentive staff! Our team, as well as the island, really exhibit true aloha to all of our visitors. I look forward to welcoming you back to paradise.

Warmest aloha,

Alice Bouman

First trip to Lanai, although we have been to Maui, Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island. Really liked the small size of this hotel and Lanai in general. Very few tourists. Hotel never felt busy or full.
I will give you some highlights/helpful hints possibly from our stay as my assessment of the hotel is just like reviews before, it is beautiful and tranquil, great service, and a great place to stay.

- The shuttle is about $50 per per person. We took it frequently either to town or the other hotel. The walk to town is an easy 5 min, but not well lit at all once it is dark. Tried it one night and thus waited for the bus the others. It was a bit frustrating to see people in town on the ferry from Maui for the day using the shuttle back and forth for free when guests of the hotel have to pay to use it, but I guess they can't police who gets on easily. One other comment- the shuttle only ran once an hour during the day Monday through Friday until 4:30 then ran every half hour after that and on weekends. Thus you had to plan a little carefully if you wanted to use the shuttle during the day. Miss it and you had a long hour wait until the next one.
- Eat in town. We tried Blue Ginger, Pele's Other Garden, and Canoes. Blue ginger was hands down our favorite. Good food, and very reasonable pricing. In fact we liked it so much we didn't eat at the hotel. Couldn't see paying the prices for food at the hotel when very good food was to be had at blue ginger (although probably not as gourmet, but at a fraction of the cost, we didn't care). Blue Ginger always seemed to have the most locals and non locals eating there as well - that tells the story right there.
- Loved the orchid house at the hotel. Don't miss stopping in for a look at the beautiful flowers. You don't see that at hotels every day!
-Loved the 18 hole put put and the lawn bowling courts. Again, you don't see that at hotels every day! They also had a game room with fuse ball, shuffle board and two pool tables. That was fun for the evenings.
-Complementary coffee, tea and muffins in the music room from 5:30am to 7am only.
-Loved the L'Occitane toiletries as well as the daily in room treats.
- The hike to Koloiki ridge, which starts right at the golf pro hut was worth it. About an hour each way. Has a great view of Moloki and Maui and two gulches that are really impressive. We also hiked to the end of the Munro trail during that hike and it also has a nice view point at the top of a pretty long climb uphill.
-Rented a jeep from dollar. You really only need to rent one day to see it all. Shipwreck beach is not that great. Polihua is the best. Dollar DID let you take the jeep there. Only place we couldn't go was Munro trail. Pack some food and drink and spend a few hours at Polihua. Definitely the best beach on the island. Hands down better than Manele.
-the pool is a little small and in need of updating. It was still enjoyable though and the hot tubs were hot enough on our visit. The one thing I have to say is they have three lifts to allow handicapped or aging individuals in and out of the pool and each of the two hot tubs. While I can say that they are really great to have and I can appreciate them on one hand, on the other it made the small pool and hot tubs feel very institutional and not much like a resort.
-Do bring a jacket. You will need it at least once.
- We flew to Lanai on Mokulele airlines from Maui. They were decent, but if you don't like tiny single engine planes and a bit of frequent turbulence due to the winds on Maui, you might want to ferry it over.
-Being from Oregon, and having the ability to buy fabulous Oregon wines inside security at the airport, we bought and brought in our own wine. The rooms at the hotel had wine glasses and a cork screw. Mokulele has no TSA security at the Maui airport.

I do have one more comment about the hotel common furniture. It is all quite dated and/or in need or repair or replacement. The cushions on all the outdoor furniture are either stained or torn. Many of the recliners in the great room also had issues. There was lots of chatter about the new owner Larry Ellison while we were there by the staff. Perhaps with a new infusion of money and new owner, standards will improve a bit. Not a deal breaker and I will be the first to admit I am very picky. Overall it was a great place to stay and relax on a very quite and relaxing island.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms have a balcony. Do try to get a view of the koi pond.

The Lodge was terrific. The staff was attentive, friendly and always helpful. Truthfully, the staff at the Lodge was much better than the staff at Manele. The lodge staff was much more personable and made you feel at home. We loved the room and left the windows open most of our visit. It was very comfortable, inviting and we had a great fire. Arrival and departure was great! We immediately felt welcome. When we left our bags were efficiently transferred to Manele and we did not worry about a thing. Food throughout our stay was great. Anything we needed, we got from the Concierge. They were great to help schedule activities, provide directions, provide a sewing kit. The Lodge was wonderful, peaceful, relaxing and it was really the staff that made it special.

we stayed 2 nights, breaking our stay on Maui in the middle to relax a little. the lodge is beautiful and peaceful, and the shuttle bus to the beach resort and Lanai City are great if you want to snorkel or swim. Don't overlook the grill in the Lanai City Hotel. It's not cheap, but it's cheaper than the big guys, and very good. The shuttle wil take you there. The shuttle cost us $50-ish each, one-time, for unlimited use. the landscaping has a definite Zen-garden feel. This would be a great place for a meditative retreat.

the 18-hole putter-only course was surprisingly enjoyable.

We stayed here last week during our honeymoon

We both loved the staff and the service we got from all. Bellmen, drivers, housekeeping all where above and beyond

Looks like changes are being made (fixtures going from Oriental to native Hawaiian) but we loved it

We wanted a slower pace and that is what we got

Saying that we found more than enough to do for our weeks stay.

We took a couple days to just hang out and enjoy each property. There is a lot to do close by

I would say the only slightly disappointing thing was the pool. The service was great but compared to other places we have stay it was quite small. Still enjoyed it and the peace and quiet of the area

We will go back someday

Aloha parcapecod,

Mahalo for taking the time to review your stay. I'm delighted to learn you selected the Resort as your honeymoon destination. It's such a romantic retreat and as you mentioned, avails both an upcountry and ocean experience with the beach just down the road. Thank you for the great feedback regarding our staff, service and our new Hawaiian inspired decor - it truly reflects an authentic sense of place. I look forward to welcoming you back soon. Thank you again for visiting and spending such a special occasion with us.

Warmest aloha,

The climate at the lodge is always a few degrees cooler than most other locations in Hawai'i. Surrounded by beautiful landscape, the atmosphere of the grounds is very relaxing and secluded. The resort offers a free 18 hole miniature golf course complete with bunkers and water hazards, as well as a regular 18-hole course with stunning views. Just a 5 minute walk to town.

Room Tip: We stayed in a Koele Deluxe room which offers a spacious interior and nice views of the grounds.

This place is magical. Grounds are impeccible. I love to relax and play the lawn games, enjoyed the live music. I can't think of any criticism of this place other than the pool area needs updating, but if I want a pool I ride the bus to Manele. Both the Lodge and the Bay are my Hawaii favorites. They just go the extra mile for you and it makes a huge difference. Don't go to Lanai looking for shopping or nightlife this is truly the place to unwind. I'm trying to come back sooner this time.
