“Basic food - get the coconut pie. :)”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

This is your usual National Park type experience but with a little local twist. The food was good and basic. The highlight was the coconut pie. It was fun watching the baby chickens scrabbling around outside.

“Delicious food, great service”
Reviewed May 20, 2012

We stopped here on a foggy, sprinkling day for lunch. They had a fire going in the fireplace, very cozy, if not a little unexpected in Hawaii. They let us split a Kahlua Pork sandwich, it had lots of meat and really was delicious, plenty for a light lunch. We also split a Lilikoi pie, it was also very good. We had good service, and enjoyed watching the chicken families running around outside.

“Slow Service (for others)...Great Cornbread”
Reviewed May 1, 2012

This is basically the only place to eat en route to Waimea Canyon. Seemed a bit pricey for the quality and quantity of food. When we arrived it was pretty empty, but we must have arrived at the right time because we were noticed and got service right away (though apparently you serve yourself beverages out of a small fridge or pitcher). Shortly thereafter a couple of other guests arrived and waited a long time (~15 minutes?) before anyone noticed they were there, despite numerous attempts of "hello...??" to the kitchen. I'm pretty sure one person was the server and the cook so once they had an order they spent the time in the kitchen. The food in general was ok (I had a burger, others had chili), notthing to brag home about...except for the cornbread! Yum! It must have a lot of butter and/or sugar in it because it was delicious and a good size. If that's all you get there, you would be a happy camper!

“chili and cornbread”
Reviewed April 12, 2012

arrived before lunch. split the chili and cornbread with my wife, got a hawaiian drink out of the cooler. I enjoyed the taste, my wife thought it was average. Liked the meat in the chili. since we got there early before noon, got a nice window view of the park area, could watch the chickens running around. very homey atmosphere. unfortunately, we should have gone straight to the lookout point before the clouds came in, rather than stop for lunch. but since we were hungry, had to choose food before the view!

“A very pleasant surprise at the top of Waimea valley”
Reviewed April 2, 2012

The Kokee Lodge is NOT your typical hamburgers/hot dogs park concessionaire. The Kalua pork and 'homemade' portuguese soup were both delicious and the iced tea was the best I've had in Hawaii. The salad was straightforward and tasty and the kids had their choice of Hawaiian juices out of the fridge. Perhaps best of all was the warm coconut pie - a must have treat!

The server was quite nice and the while the restaurant is a paper plate/styrofoam kind of place the ambiance was charming - you sit in a wood filled room w/a fireplace in the background looking out over a great expanse of lawn with plenty of Moa.

Is this a 5 dot restaurant like Morimoto's of Waikiki? No...of course, not. But this was one of the better and certainly the cheapest meals we had on Kauai. This, combined with it's surprising location makes it worth a top rating.
