the road out to the ocean was horrible! The view is great from there but getting there in a rental car with a low carriage is more than bumpy.

Not much to see here really, just an pile of rocks on top of an earth bank. Yes you can see the outline of the old fort but not really any evidence of the former buildings inside.

There are the remains of an old fort here. There is one small educational reading area. I had the most fun exploring the beach nearby. The water is brown because it is near the river mouth, and I wouldn't swim here.

I stopped at Fort Elizabeth on my way back from Waimea Canyon. Few people know that the Russians had a minor military/trading presence in Kauai, outside history nerds like me. An information board near the parking lot provides a brief history of the fort. Don't expect Fort Sumter here; all that is left are the ramparts. The red soil of Kauai, caused by the high iron content, is particularly noticeable, and the fort overlooks a beautiful stretch of the coast. I spent about an hour at the fort, but I am an historian. The average tourist will probably spend between 15-30 minutes. It's good for a quick stop and short history lesson.

Did you know the Russians had a presence in Kauai? They tried to establish relations with the Hawaiians but lack of support from Russia ended their plans. The site contains a history of the events along with the base remains of the fort near the mouth of the river. A short add-on as you visit Waimea Canyon. The Hawaiians took it over about 1817 and maintained it until 1864.
