“Excellent cruise”
Review of Liko Kauai Cruises

Overall this was a memorable event in our vacation. We traveled with two young kids (age below 10) and we all loved the cruise.

The crew was relaxed, friendly and professional. They seemed to know a lot of things about the Na Pali coast history, the wild life there and also e.g. the hiking trails that go along the coast. And they provided this information all the time by casually chatting with the guests and pointing out interesting facts about the surroundings.

Their bigger boat felt safe and clean even with kids. Good seats and half of the seats were in shade (if you don't like to be under blazing sun all the time). But the boat was still small enough that we had a good joy ride back with waves splashing big time.

We decided that we wanted to spend our last day on Kauai on the water. We'd already done a wild, rafting expedition along the Na Pali coast and thought that a larger boat would give us a different perspective. We were luckily to book last minute on the Na Pali Kai III catamaran and even luckier to find that there were only 12 of us on the trip (the vessel seats much more!).

When safe, the captain (sadly, i don't remember his name) allowed us to sit at the front of the boat with the railing to hold on to - we were able to see pods of dolphins swim closely by, one even turning on it's back and flapping it tail at us! The first mate (again, i've forgotten his name) was extremely knowledgeable and shared loads of information with us. Due to high seas, we weren't able to get into caves but we got very close. And we were able to stop for a short swim.

On the return, the captain allowed us to sit at the front railing again and took us on a roller-coaster ride - rising and falling with the swells! it was such great fun. Sadly the waves got a bit rough, and we had to return to our seats, but it was an experience while it lasted. The perfect way to spend our last day on Kauai!

If it's not saying enough, we plan to book again and again with these guys on our next (and subsequent) visits. First off, it is neither fair nor reasonable to hold the crew responsible for things that are beyond anyone's control, such as choppy seas, vog, lack or marine life, tiny or absent waterfalls, etc. That said, at the end of our trip on Dec 6 we felt like we won the lottery! Although it was early in the season, we saw about 7 or 8 GROUPS of humpbacks consisting of 3 or 4 individuals. Ove the course of the 8:30 departure/5 hour sail/snorkel we also saw about 15 PODS of spinner dolphins (in and around the boat, in the air, spinning), as well as two pods of bottlenose dolpins feeding. It seemed like every single dolphin had to come check out the boat and swim with us for a while! Our daughters aged 7 and 9 were enthralled the entire time (no small feat for Disney-conditioned kids!!). At the snorkel stop we saw a number of sea turtles; I would rate the 'reef life' as only ok. Regarding the crew, you will not get the 'mainland marketing style-resort-polished-at-your-service-ma'am' artificial service that some reviewers seem to expect. Rather, you will get a group of locals with both a broad and diverse understanding of the Na Pali coast and its history in combination with a genuine, profound respect for the ocean and its natural history. After lunch was handed out you could tell they were honestly worried about garbage getting thrown overboard and were constantly asking to collect your used packaging!! The sandwiches were tasty and homemade (maybe in Mary's kitchen that morning?) along with pop and chips. Definitely hit the spot after snorkeling. The snorkel gear that was made available was quite good, and in the right size for our two girls. Unfortunately my eldest dropped a fin in the water to our horror; the crew was very gracious and non-chalant in the face of our profound embarrassment, spending a good 5 minutes trying to locate it on the bottom (mahalo guys). On our third trip to the islands in three years we have lived and breathed by Kauai Revealed and Big Island Revealed; despite their 'pretty good' review of Liko Kauai, I would say these should have gushed more in their book - in our minds these guys are A REAL GEM!!!

We did a lot of research on various catamaran/snorkeling tours and picked Liko Kauai and weren't disappointed. These folks are different because the boat is a bit smaller and is crewed by locals (born and raised on Kauai) who really know what they are doing. The boat is smaller so you get into tighter places and get to see some things that you can't see on other of the larger boats. Liko Kauai also leaves from the marina farthest north so you are at the beaches, coves and various sights long before the other boats. The snorkeling was the best I've experienced! We saw flying fish, spinner dolphins, Sea Turtles (one swam within six feet of me!!) and an amazing array of fish. Overall: Outstanding!

We stumbled across this cruise while searching the internet for snorkeling gear on Kauai. Booked it for the next day and we're so glad we did. The tour was simply top-notch. Captain and crew were easygoing and fun while still maintaining a high standard of professionalism. They relayed TONS of fascinating information about the island and its wild creatures as they took us to one jaw-dropping view after another. We got to see pods of spinner dolphins and several Pacific green sea turtles, plus other wildlife (and hikers on the NaPali cliffs!) The tour never felt rushed, and the captain was very flexible in terms of finding out what his passengers were interested in and what we wanted to do. Still, he made it clear that safety was number one, which we appreciated and respected. We were lucky that day that the boat could go into two sea caves, plus we were able to snorkel. It was my first time snorkeling and I was a little nervous, but the captain and crew were helpful, fun, and encouraging. I spotted a Pacific green sea turtle swimming a few feet below me...WOW. The ride back to Waimea Harbor was simply thrilling with the catarmaran riding the waves. My only regret is that I didn't sit way up front in the bow with some of the other folks...they said it was better than any roller coaster! All in all, it was five hours of magic. We don't often repeat experiences when we travel, but this will DEFINITELY be an exception.
