Owner description: Princeville Botanical Gardens is a family owned and operated garden paradise located in the Princeville area on the magnificent north shore of Kauai. The Robertson Family, with the help of their close gardening friend, Michael, have transformed their 8-acre retirement home into a breathtaking garden with dramatic landscaping in two steep valleys. The Robertsons grow a small cacao (chocolate) grove and part of every tour is a chocolate tasting and lesson on how chocolate is made. Longer tours include samples of delicious tropical fruits. The fun, educational tours of the garden include ethnobotanical and medicinal uses of plants, stories and information about native Hawaiian and "canoe" plants, and much more about a diverse collection of species from around the world. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Visitors can experience the garden on pre-scheduled tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tours are not recommended for children under 6 years. We strongly recommend good walking shoes. Please be sure to call us before visiting. Thank you!

“A wonderful garden tour”
Reviewed January 30, 2013 via mobile

My wife and a friend took the garden tour and both felt that they had never taken a tour that provided as much great information.
The leader has a PhD and was able to pass along a wealth of useful information. They particularly enjoyed the chocolate tour and discussion of the processing of chocolate.

“Step off the tourist train for a peaceful interlude”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

We did two garden tours on our week-long trip to Kaua'i in December (the other was an anthropological treasure, Limahuli Gardens, also on the north shore).

Although the current name sounds like an official municipal establishment, this is really a private home that the owners generously share on these tours, and we felt like privileged guests in our small group (10), led by an extremely knowledgeable and personable college professor (Holly) through an impressively varied and aesthetically divine setting.

Umbrellas (we decided not to carry one) and bug spray were thoughtfully provided at the gathering point and we also brought sunscreen. They warn that some areas are steep, but we found the terrain to be very well graded and switch-backed, easily accessible to anyone who can enjoy a moderate walk with many opportunities to stop, learn about the excellent examples of beautiful plants and even taste some of the fruits of the owners' labor. The contours of the garden afford a great variety of restful views, from shady stream side forest, to sweeping open vistas, verdant terraces, a special picnic area, and a gazebo. This was the most photogenic place we visited on the island!

The last site was where we sat in the shade and learned about the chocolate making process. It was really nice to understand how the fruit of the small grove of cacao trees (which are amazingly productive due to a clever cultivating strategy) we just walked through is transformed. We sampled an interesting variety of finished product, and had the chance to buy similar kinds of chocolate (plus photo cards and noni products and T-shirts) at the end of the tour.

The few hours we spent here were a delight, and a welcome relief from the other, more touristy things we did on Kaua'i. It was abundantly clear how hard this family has worked to make their 7 acres a thoughtfully planted and impeccably maintained private paradise and we felt the fee for the tour was well rewarded by the renewing time we spent there, the expertise of our guide and knowing we might help sustain this gem of a garden.

“My new Happy Place”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

We're all supposed to have a "Happy Place" we can go to when we need to decompress ... I found a new one. Truly the most lush garden and landscape I have ever seen. The group was small - 10 total; so we had all our questions answered by an incredibly intelligent guide - Nadia. I learned about the chocolate making process and tasted enough chocolate to last me til ... the next day.
Wear comfortable tennis shoes - there are steep climbs.
Take a camera so you can remember what your Happy Place looks like!

“Our return visit didn't disappoint.”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

This was our second visit to the gardens. Last year the tour was conducted by Jason, the son of the owner who has now left. That day was very wet and rain fell throughout the tour. This time it was sunny, which also made a tremendous difference and really brought out the stunning colours of the various plants. Jason's place has been filled by Dr. Holly. She was extremely knowledgeable, full of enthusiasm and gave a great tour.

We will return to see how these beautiful gardens develop.
