Owner description: Princeville Botanical Gardens is a family owned and operated garden paradise located in the Princeville area on the magnificent north shore of Kauai. The Robertson Family, with the help of their close gardening friend, Michael, have transformed their 8-acre retirement home into a breathtaking garden with dramatic landscaping in two steep valleys. The Robertsons grow a small cacao (chocolate) grove and part of every tour is a chocolate tasting and lesson on how chocolate is made. Longer tours include samples of delicious tropical fruits. The fun, educational tours of the garden include ethnobotanical and medicinal uses of plants, stories and information about native Hawaiian and "canoe" plants, and much more about a diverse collection of species from around the world. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Visitors can experience the garden on pre-scheduled tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tours are not recommended for children under 6 years. We strongly recommend good walking shoes. Please be sure to call us before visiting. Thank you!

“Great Tour !!!!!”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

We have visited several gardens on Kauai and this is a must see. We spent 3 ½ hours today on the 3 hour tour and had a great time. Bill and Lucinda have a wonderful garden and provide a fantastic tour.

Bill was our tour guide today. He was very informative and extremely personable. He shared many stories about the gardens which were very interesting. There are almost 500 different species from all over the world. Our tour was broken up at least 8 times with opportunities to sample the many fruits from the gardens, several of which we had never had before; guava, orange-tangerine fruit, papaya, noni, pomegranate, passion fruit, sour something-or-other (I can’t remember the actual name but you will like it), and others . And the best was of course the CHOCOLATE TASTING. Halfway through the tour we stopped for a chocolate tasting. We tried 6 different chocolates from all over the world and saw how different they tasted. We also tasted some of the chocolate that they grew in the gardens.

The tour was supposed to be 3 hours but Bill extended it another half hour as we kept asking questions. He seemed to enjoy our questions and not mind that we were going over. He even invited us back to walk the gardens and take more pictures. It is obvious that the gardens are a labor of love and not just a place to make money. If you take the tour make sure to ask him about the history of the gardens and the many different employees that he has at the garden.

This tour was terrific. Bill and Lucinda keep the tour to small groups, so you can ask plenty of questions and get a really great understanding of the garden and its contents. If I had friends coming to Kauai then I would highly recommend it. Reservations are a must. Thanks Bill and Lucinda.

“The family garden-one man's retirement project”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

My husband and i took the tour in July, 2012. We arrived at the hilltop meeting place on a day that threatened and promised rain. The tour goes on regardless of the weather with umbrellas and mosquito repellant provided. Our guide was the adult son of the owners and one of the other customers was an expert on tropical plants. We meandered down the terraces to a flowing stream, admiring the beautiful flowers and trees, not all native. One tourist photographed with her iPad. Chocolate tasting was fine. It was time well spent.

“Botanical Gardens to ourselves”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

No one was there. We had 15 peacocks, a ringside cock fight and a dozen morning doves to ourselves. There were a lot of musquitos however so bring repellent.

Thank you so much for your positive review! We're thrilled that you enjoyed your time in our gardens. For future visitors, a few notes: we own no peacocks, and we don't host cockfights, though you might see a dove or two. Private tours of our property are not allowed, even if no one is around. As in most places near fresh water on the island , there are mosquitos. We generally have bug spray available for our guests, but if this is a concern it is a good idea to bring your own!

“Great time, great guide”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

Staying at the Westin in Princeville, we really wanted to take in a botanical garden and we really didn't want to take another long ride in the car. The Ahonui was a great choice as it is right up the street, is quite beautiful, includes chocolate tasting and is run by the nicest and most personally involved people. A beautiful setting to see a wide variety of plants....and to taste homegrown fruits...many I had never tasted before.....a total immersion of the senses.

We later did go to another garden on the south side of the island....we had a much better time at Ahonui....now Princeville Botanical gardens.
