Owner description: Princeville Botanical Gardens is a family owned and operated garden paradise located in the Princeville area on the magnificent north shore of Kauai. The Robertson Family, with the help of their close gardening friend, Michael, have transformed their 8-acre retirement home into a breathtaking garden with dramatic landscaping in two steep valleys. The Robertsons grow a small cacao (chocolate) grove and part of every tour is a chocolate tasting and lesson on how chocolate is made. Longer tours include samples of delicious tropical fruits. The fun, educational tours of the garden include ethnobotanical and medicinal uses of plants, stories and information about native Hawaiian and "canoe" plants, and much more about a diverse collection of species from around the world. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Visitors can experience the garden on pre-scheduled tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tours are not recommended for children under 6 years. We strongly recommend good walking shoes. Please be sure to call us before visiting. Thank you!

“Great tour!!”
Reviewed June 5, 2012

This is a great tour and something relaxing to do on one of your days in Kauai. Jason, the guide, is very knowledgeable and personable. You get to walk around the gardens and taste a lot of different fruit they grow there. Their honey is delish!!! We went with 6 people and everyone kept talking about it though out the whole trip. We were able to identify plants all over Hawaii from the stuff we learned on this tour. Chocolate tasting at the end is just the cherry on top of the cake!! Definitely worth your time to do this tour and support a family owned company. Only downside is they do not sell their chocolate, honey or fruit, so enjoy your one taste of it.

“Ahonui Botanical Garden-Kauai”
Reviewed May 23, 2012

I have visited all 5 botanical gardens on Kauai and none have disappointed. This is the newest and it's highlight is a chocolate tasting at the end of the tour. We tried 7 varieties of high quality chocolate including one produced on site from their cacao trees. The tour and chocolate tasting/presentation lasted 3 hours and cost $40/person. The tour guide was very knowledgeable of the grounds and plant life.
I have been to the "University of Chocolate" at Hershey, PA and the presentation and tasting here exceeded the quality of the Hershey Chocolate program. This was great for adults who have an interest in tropical plants. I would not recommend for kids or those who have difficulty with mobility.

Jason, the guide, was really versed in the flora without being stuffy or a "know it all." He was sensitive to the people on the tour allowing us to ask all sorts of questions. The tour provides opportunities to pause for a breather, to take pictures, and even sample fruits of the garden ending with a cacao/dark chocolate sampling session. Yum! It was well worth the price of admission...I highly recommend it!

“Chocolate and Plants? Could it be any better?”
Reviewed April 27, 2012 via mobile

We took the delightful tour lead by Jason, the son of the garden owners. He was entertaining, approachable and knowledgable about the gardens. Following a walk through the garden where Jason discussed his experiments growing cacao beans, we gathered for a chocolate tasting. Much like a wine tasting, Jason educated us on what to look for and gave time to hear what we thought. The final chocolate was the family's chocolate which we now understood how was made. This wouldn't be a fun tour with young children.
