Owner description: Princeville Botanical Gardens is a family owned and operated garden paradise located in the Princeville area on the magnificent north shore of Kauai. The Robertson Family, with the help of their close gardening friend, Michael, have transformed their 8-acre retirement home into a breathtaking garden with dramatic landscaping in two steep valleys. The Robertsons grow a small cacao (chocolate) grove and part of every tour is a chocolate tasting and lesson on how chocolate is made. Longer tours include samples of delicious tropical fruits. The fun, educational tours of the garden include ethnobotanical and medicinal uses of plants, stories and information about native Hawaiian and "canoe" plants, and much more about a diverse collection of species from around the world. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Visitors can experience the garden on pre-scheduled tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tours are not recommended for children under 6 years. We strongly recommend good walking shoes. Please be sure to call us before visiting. Thank you!

Jason, the guide, was really versed in the flora without being stuffy or a "know it all." He was sensitive to the people on the tour allowing us to ask all sorts of questions. The tour provides opportunities to pause for a breather, to take pictures, and even sample fruits of the garden ending with a cacao/dark chocolate sampling session. Yum! It was well worth the price of admission...I highly recommend it!

We took the delightful tour lead by Jason, the son of the garden owners. He was entertaining, approachable and knowledgable about the gardens. Following a walk through the garden where Jason discussed his experiments growing cacao beans, we gathered for a chocolate tasting. Much like a wine tasting, Jason educated us on what to look for and gave time to hear what we thought. The final chocolate was the family's chocolate which we now understood how was made. This wouldn't be a fun tour with young children.

This was a very pleasant surprise when this attraction opened in the Princeville area. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, the entire staff friendly and the small group tour was most enjoyable. They accommodated my wife who had some mobility issues at the time by allowing her to follow along in a golf cart. The walkway and trails can be steep in places and also a bit slippery as Kauai does have frequent rain showers. So walking shoes are far preferable to flip-flops. And, don't forget insect repellent.

But, the plants and the gardens are just beautiful. And, the amount of work that went into developing the tiers on the property is just amazing. This is both a scenic and educational experience.

It was raining the Saturday that we toured the gardens. Didn't know how I would enjoy walking in the rain. The grounds and walkways are nicely laid out and they provide umbrellas and walking sticks. There is a fresh water stream that runs through the garden; but there is a steep climb up the hillside near by. Be sure to wear tennis or some type of good walking shoe.

Jason, our guide, was so knowledgable. He treated us by allowing us to taste several fruits from the island and I saw my first nutmeg tree. They had just finisihed harvesting the cacoa pods to make chocolate. You will appreciate how much effort there is in growing, harvesting, and in making chocolate after the tour.

The chocolate tasting event was a real eye opener for me. I had no idea that there was so much variety in cocoa and its preparation. I would compare it to attending a wine tasting event.

This tour was well worth the time and money.
