Owner description: Princeville Botanical Gardens is a family owned and operated garden paradise located in the Princeville area on the magnificent north shore of Kauai. The Robertson Family, with the help of their close gardening friend, Michael, have transformed their 8-acre retirement home into a breathtaking garden with dramatic landscaping in two steep valleys. The Robertsons grow a small cacao (chocolate) grove and part of every tour is a chocolate tasting and lesson on how chocolate is made. Longer tours include samples of delicious tropical fruits. The fun, educational tours of the garden include ethnobotanical and medicinal uses of plants, stories and information about native Hawaiian and "canoe" plants, and much more about a diverse collection of species from around the world. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Visitors can experience the garden on pre-scheduled tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tours are not recommended for children under 6 years. We strongly recommend good walking shoes. Please be sure to call us before visiting. Thank you!

We live on kauai and love to garden. This tour exceeded our expectations. The guide was genuine and knowledgable. he was able to answer my questions, which is something as I have some knowledge in this area. the site itself was just lovely and for someone wanting to learn more about tropical plants and there cultivation this is the tour to go on. we ended the tour with a chocolate tasting. This was kind of like a wine tasting and we now have a deeper appreciation for chocolate... which can't be bad.

I can't recommend Ahonui Gardens enough. It was interesting, with several different kinds of planting areas, including some cacao trees, where we got to learn about processing cacao into chocolate (complete with samples of different kinds!). There was time to see everything, and really enjoy the experience. It was different from other garden tours my wife and I have been on over the years since it was like being invited into a friend's private project (actually, it is someone private project that grew into something even more, but it maintains the feel). I look forward to seeing it again in the future to find out what else they come up with!

The Ahonui Botanical Gardens is a truly unique, private, and authentic experience on Kauai, if you are interested in doing something a little out of the ordinary. Loved every second of the private tour of these lush and beautifully landscaped grounds, the exotic fruit-tastings along the way, and the very informative (and yummy) chocolate tasting at the end. These grounds are owned and maintained privately by one family, from what we understood, and their son Jason gave us the two hour tour. We lucked out, as the family that was supposed to come with us cancelled, so it was only us two - and we had a private tour!

The owners and tour-givers for these gardens, clearly possess a respect, love and knowledge of flora and fauna (both native and introduced species) that is really astounding. Jason was enthusiastic, incredibly helpful, entertaining, and provided an amazing tour. Among other things we learned about traditional medicinal plants, native species to Hawaii, the process of making chocolate, and history of Hawaiian culture. During our tour, there is quite a lot of walking (and you do need to be careful and bring some bug spray) but there's so much that Jason pointed out along the way, that the pace did not feel strenuous. He also picked several fruits for us, split or cut them open during our walk, and we got to taste the fresh fruits. Totally amazing and really down to earth experience!

At the end, we went inside the house porch and Jason taught us about the process of making cocoa and chocolate. We tried several kinds of fantastic dark chocolate bars, along with the nibs of the cocoa bean.

We left happily having bought several bars of chocolate, feeling wiser, and happier, knowing that there are fantastic places and tours like this. Would recommend for everybody.

What an unexpected delight! My wife and I found the few hours we spent touring these spectacular gardens to be wonderfully enjoyable and enlightening. The tour guide had a great way of sharing so many insights about the remarkable plants and the related culture and history of the Hawaiians. Surprisingly engaging... tasting the fruits and smelling the various blossoms while learning about them.

There were savvy botanists along as well as novices like us taking in the scenery and all seemed to come away happy and enriched. The chocolate tasting at the end was also a nice bonus experience- really informative.

Of the many ways we have spent a few hours on this magical island over the years, this has to move to the top of the list. A magical place that lives up to its billing. Worth every penny - will do this again next time we are on Kauai. Kudos to the team at Ahonui.

Our group thoroughly enjoyed spending the morning touring the gardens with Jason Robertson. He is an excellent guide and allowed us to move at our own pace since we were a small group. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful - eye candy, indeed! - full of color and unusual plants. The lesson on the cacao bean and chocolate was very ineresting and tasty, as were the fruits we got to taste throughout the tour. This is a "must see" while on the island of Kauai!
