“Good Food, Service, and Atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 1, 2014 via mobile

We had a nice, pleasant meal with a killer view of the sunset. They have a side door that one can use to go out and take pictures of the sunset on the patio. I had the romaine salad to start and found it to be good but not exceptional. My wife and daughter had the hearts of Palm salad and they said it was delicious. The fish (Ono) was good and the chicken with the salsa was crispy and flavorful. We had sides of ginger rice and mashed potatoes, also quite good. The desserts of vanilla soufflé and the sundae with caramel popcorn were equally delicious.

“Pricey but worth it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2014

We had a wonderful dining experience at the Kauai Grill in the St Regis hotel. The service was friendly and attentive. I had the best lobster I have ever eaten and even had "leftovers". It was pricey at over $60 but worth every penny. Our first course was the yellowtail sashimi and it was fresh and beautifully presented. It's a great place for a special dinner. Our only disappointment was that it had been a cloudy, rainy day and there was no sunset !

“5-star view & service, 4-star food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014 via mobile

We made the reservation for just before sunset, cause let's face it, I'm not visiting Kauai for a Jean George meal (it's not very Hawaiian). When we asked the hostess for an outdoor table she did inform us about the a terrace restaurant (not the Grill menu or prices) which we would've been all over, but they had a private party out there. Still thought it was sweet of the hostess to attempt that option for us. We showed up early because they could not guarantee a window table on the reservation, but not early enough. All window tables were occupied by one hour before sunset. So we just walked out into their terrace during our meal to watch. Again the staff was accommodating on that. And the view if Bali Hai and Hanalei Bay at sunset was amazing.

Food - some delicious morsels on apps: octopus and French onion soup. But the hearts of Palm salad was disappointing - not the burst of flavor of hearts of palm I'd expect at a restaurant of this calibre (have tasted better hearts of Palm at a hole in the wall in rio). A side of their black truffle cheese puffs were eyes-in-the-back-of-your-head yummy. Our main courses were disappointing. The ahi was all about the pepper instead of the pepper complementing the fish. The mahi mahi was ok.

Desserts were amazing - we tried warm chocolate cake and cheesecake. Bellies left happy.

Wine was marked up ridiculously. Again, my fault for going to a place like this on a trip to Kauai. So we did not order wine. No big deal - great cocktails.

So the thing is - you can have this meal in any major city on the mainland. I'm glad I went for the view, but would just return for the view - not the super expensive and less than perfect meal I could get in LA, San Francisco or NYC.

“First night”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2014

We dined at this restaurant our first night at the St. Regis. This was a mistake after a long day of travel as we were to tired to really enjoy our experience. Our food was excellent, lamb for me short ribs for my wife, both prepared wonderfully, but keep in mind they pride themselves on simple preparation. The restaurant space was dark and intimate which was romantic but after our day we just wanted to go to sleep, sad because the food was really excellent.

“Not worth the price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2014

My husband and I had the tasting menu with wine pairing in late May 2014. While most of the courses were adequate the main fish course, Mahi Mahi, was awful. We complained and received another course. The wine pairing was excellent and the setting was nice. The service was a little rushed and felt a little off. Overall the meal was just ok and certainly not worth the $375 paid. This did not compare well to other tasting menus we have experienced. I would not recommend this restaurant.
