“OUTSTANDING EXPERIENCE, all around”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

I have been to the JG restaurant in NYC and the food and service were not worth the high price. The Kauai Grill is almost perfect and was great for our celebration. The food could not have been bettered and our waiter was helpful and attentive without being intrusive. The bill was a bit hefty, but what we had expected.
The restaurant appears very well organized and everyone conducts themselves professionally.

Keep it up - We'll be back for the next celebration.

“Satisfied”

Dining in Hawaii is....well, not the highlight of visiting this beautiful place. That being said, our meal at the Kauai Grill was very good. The view is amazing but the acoustics are terrible....very noisy. Ginger chicken was very nice and the pavlova for dessert was excellent. Even better is Bar Acuda in Hanalei.

“not to Jean Georges standard”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

My wife and I have eaten at the Mercer Kitchen and JoJo several times. In fact JoJo is one of our must do meals in Manhattan. We recently visited Kauai for a destination wedding and met my wife’s brother and wife for dinner at the Kauai Grill, located in the St Regis hotel. We had a spectacular meal years ago when the hotel was under different ownership and hoped Jean Georges would at least meet those expectations. We were wrong. Everything was overpriced, even for resort dining, and the service was at best odd. We ordered asparagus with our meal and received five rather tasteless breaded spears, hardly worth the twelve dollars, or about a dollar a bite, we paid. (We spent over $250 for dinner and wine per couple.) The waiter was often attentive, but sometimes absent and the busboy who cleared our salad plates left behind dirty utensils. They also tried to clear the dishes before all of us had finished our meals. Very good bread, but when we requested additional from the busboy, he smiled and disappeared. The fish entre was tasty but in an overproduced manner that did little to highlight the flavor and instead relied on flamboyance which seemed in keeping with the extravagance as the overdone lobby, very unlike his restaurants in Manhattan. The experience felt more Donald Trump, than master chef.

“Ew.”
Reviewed July 14, 2013 via mobile

You know when you leave a restaurant after paying an over $200 bill for 2 people and you become increasingly outraged/angry at the experience you paid for? Yep, this is what happened to us at the Kauai Grill.

We were on our honeymoon at the St. Regis and decided to try the Grill on the 4th of July. It was apparent that the staff was annoyed to be working as we were rushed through the meal as if we were in a Steak-N-Shake in suburban Illinois. The decor was also reminiscent of a suburban shopping mall circa 1986.

We had a bottle of Catena Malbec which was 66 dollars- our mistake for ordering an 18 dollar bottle of wine on a huge markup- but it was the only highlight of the dining experience.

I ordered the "Kona Lobster" - the server told me it was "sautéed" - and my husband ordered the Ahi Tuna.

The tuna dish was fine, nothing special. The Kona Lonster was the most disgusting meal I have ever had. It was in a gooey kitty litter type coating and was pieces of lobster- probably out of a can. Sauteed???? It was indelible but at 68 dollars and on our honeymoon, I didn't want to be an annoying guest, but I really should have demanded a new meal. For 280 dollars, go to Bar Acuda down the highway in Hanalei to get some real food and good service.

Gross. Shame on the St. Regis for having this restaurant in your hotel.

“Feeling Let Down”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

Atmosphere- If you are going to the restaurant, book ahead and ask for a sea view table during sun set hours. I arrived well after sunset and was not impressed by the atmosphere, it was on the dark and noisy side. Halfway through our meal the sound system seemed to play a feedback noise that lasted for about 5 min.

Food - I ordered the Cherry Tomato Gazpacho, Roasted Carrot and Avocado Salad with the Rack of Lamb. The Cherry Tomato Gazpacho consistency was that of water, and my personal preference for a gazpacho is more like a puréed, there were added tomatoes and cucumbers but like the avocado salad lacked thought. Kauai has so much availability of fresh produce and don't understand why produce was not farm fresh to table. My avocado salad only had two pathetic pieces of avocados and was filled with spouts. The availability of organic farms on the island are plentiful and an option but obviously not used. Lastly the rack of lamb was very good , however we were told we would get 3 bones and only got 2. The lamb was from Colorado and was under cooked to how we asked.

Service was on the slow side but wait staff was attentive.

I give the Kauai Grill 3 stars as there is room for improvement. Being that there are many other options and would not recommend finding an alternate place for a special meal.
