“Absolutely amazing and very family friendly!”
Reviewed July 4, 2014

My family travels to Kauai every other year and always chooses Hanalei Bay Resort to stay at. The views are absolutely breath taking, the pool area(s) are amazing and a nice place to relax at, also it is walking distance to the beach (Hanalei Bay) with is superb! HBR is near a very convenient shopping center/grocery store so you don't have to travel far to get everyday items plus beach supply which comes in handy for the many beaches only maybe tens minuets or less away from the Resort! I would say if you were looking for a nice place to stay on the North Shore HBR is the place to stay!

We just finished an 8 night stay - our 2nd over the years - at HBR. You can rent a very nice condo here for a fraction of what it costs to stay at the top rated St. Regis and get nearly the same idyllic view. The grounds are impeccably maintained, the staff is courteous, warm and attentive, and the views from many of the buildings across Hanalei Bay to Bali Hai are breathtaking. One cannot overstate how nice it is to have a full kitchen and a washer/dryer, which many units have. Dining out is exorbitant on Kauai and the ability to mix it up with periodic dining in, makes ones stay more homey. The grill cabana is conveniently located and has 3 very nice Weber grills. This is one resort where your experience will hinge to some degree on location. All the buildings in the 8000 series and the front building in the 9000 series (the Plumeria and Bamboo buildings) abut an adjacent bird sanctuary, which makes for a very wonderful view and experience as your serenaded on your Lanai by the birds. Almost all of the buildings have water views, but it is prudent to consult a resort map carefully and ask questions before booking - there are some buildings here I would never want to be in. If you like tennis they have numerous beautiful courts. They have a very nice lagoon style pool with a waterfall and an adjacent hot tub. Access to the beach is down a long path but, frankly, we spent most of our time on other nearby beaches due to better snorkeling and boogie boarding. It will be a 5 star resort again once the restaurant and bar are rebuilt - a process that has taken innumerable years, but is supposed to be completed soon. We think it is the nicest place to stay on the North shore for the money and will be returning again.

Room Tip: Opt for a unit with a full kitchen and a washer/dryer if possible. Carefully consult a resort map b...

We have stayed at Hanalei Bay Resort many times, as recently as January 2014 to as far back as February 1990. Many of the units are quite dated in their decor, as they are individually owned and have been around for awhile now. The services have changed over the years, especially after the fire which destroyed the old Bali Hai Restaurant as well as the Happy Talk bar. Fortunately they are nearing the end of the rebuilding process and these two venues should be back in service.

Having said all that, we keep returning for one reason: this place is paradise! The quiet and peaceful setting, the incredible views, and the consistently well-maintained grounds are unforgettable. We've had some units that have been updated and some that are badly in need of this. However the bottom line is that we really don't care that much about the inside! Once you step out on your lanai with your coffee in the morning, you are sold!

If you have mobility issues, this isn't the place for you. There are no elevators and the paths around the property are steeply inclined in certain places. There is golf cart service for check in and check out, and they will also drive you around the grounds when needed. Access to the beach (which is adjacent to the spectacular St Regis Hotel) is by a steep, winding path and even if you walk down, you can use the phone at the bottom to call for a lift up. If you are in good enough shape and don't mind the walks, you will love it!

Room Tip: Closet to the pool with good views would be buildings 3, 5, and 6. Buildings 4, 8, and 9 have more...

We stayed at Hanalei Bay for a week for our honeymoon in Kauai. We were very pleased with the staff, the rooms, and the grounds. Everyone was so helpful and nice! We worked with Dai at the concierge desk and she was so nice and was very helpful with getting information about our excursions. The pool is a lagoon style pool and is very pretty! The hot tub was unique in that it had stones as the bottom; very cool! The room we stayed in was newly redone and we loved it! We actually had a one bedroom/one bathroom but then we also ended up with the adjoining room with a kitchen, living room, and another bathroom. The bathrooms were huge! The appliances in the kitchen were all new and it came with a coffee pot, blender, and toaster! We were happy to have the blender to make Pina Coladas since there was no bar on site to get drinks. That is why I gave it a rating of a 4 instead of a 5. The restaurant, bar, and lobby are under construction (and from what we heard, have been out of commission for 5 years). I am sure we ended up saving a lot of money making our own drinks, so maybe it was a blessing in disguise! We went shopping at the Foodland in Princeville, which was 7-10 minutes away. I signed up for the Makaya club (only by giving my phone #) and saved a bunch on prices! It was very convenient!
The grounds of the resort are really pretty! It is very hilly and steep - which add to the character. We didn't mind the walk down to the beach (and back up!) but if it's too much for you, you can call up the front desk and they will send someone with a golf cart! We did that for using the laundry facilities but found out it was much closer than we thought!
I would recommend this resort if you want to stay on the North Shore! It was a pleasant stay and was close to some of the excursions such as Ke'e beach, kayaking, hanalei bay, etc! If you want to do other excursions on the south side, you will have to drive an hour to an hour and a half to get there!

We stayed here a week and thankfully we could upgrade to a bigger apartment and we got a huge apartment with Amazing views of the Hanalei bay. The sunsets from the resort are magical and there's a private beach that the resort shares with the St Regis just a short walk down where you have the most perfect sunsets. The resort is big with lots of condos, choose a private one or a large one to get a decent standard. They were renovating the lobby so the front desk is in a small apartment which makes for a boring first impression but it didnt matter much. You could hear some Construction and see it from the main pool but it was not too disturbing. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere here is very relaxed and familiar. Close by there is a small shopping center with restaurants and a Foodland.

We have just spent 3 nights at the HBR and loved it! The view from our lanai was spectacular. The room and lanai were lovely and the hotel facilities were great. Only negatives were that the restaurants were closed for renovations however from what we can see the views of the bay when these re-open will be magical. The resort also seems to be full of an "older crowd" but that was fine for us. About a 50 minute drive from the airport. You definitely need a car if staying here to see the sights of the island. The staff we're friendly and welcoming. We booked a privately owned condo and the price was very reasonable. We would come again.

We have rented a condo at HBR via VRBO twice. Plumeria 8232 (2 bedroom with kitchen/washer and dryer) and Palms 4106 (studio). We would highly recommend both (however somewhat reluctant to do so because we want them available for US on our next trip, ha!). I'll include photos from both lanais, but you can check out pictures and amenities for either place on the owner's websites on VRBO. All pictures are exactly as they seem, nice furniture and very clean. Comfortable beds and nice sheets. Both owners were extremely helpful with all questions that we had prior to our departure.

Resort fees of $15/day include beach towels and Wi-Fi. Nothing out of the ordinary these days. Both pools are beautifully landscaped, amidst stunning views of the coast. Ditto for tennis courts. Yogi's and meditators have beautiful spots overlooking the ocean to renew their spirits. Parking is free. Prime spots closer to the condos fill up fast, but once in while you may get lucky. The grounds are extensive and hilly, so golf-cart transportation is available if you would like to use it (highly advised for checking in and out, or after a run to Costco). If you rent a studio, there are laundry facilities on-site (one located right across from the front door of 4106.) There is a grill pavilion- 3 grills and a large counter with a sink and stove- located next to the lower pool. There are tables and chairs under the pavilion and surrounding the pool. Do as the time-share locals do... pick up a fillet from Hanalei Dolphin market (they will sell you a cup of olive oil for a few cents if your condo is not stocked, and they have THE BEST fish seasoning), grab some lettuce from Food Land (your fridge is probably already stocked with left over salad dressing), pick up a papaya off the ground from one of the many trees on the resort, and grill out. It will be your best meal of the entire trip. HBR will give you a discount key tag to Foodland in Princeville on your key for your condo. Sure, you will find $8 organic eggs there, but you will also find reasonable (for Kauai) options. If you didn't stock up in Kapaa or Costco, Foodland is still a practical option for groceries due to the convenience of the proximity to HBR.

If you are a runner, this is great location for spectacular runs through Princeville. The golf course trees on Ka Haku Road provide shade for the majority of the route on that road.

Photographers, there is a bird sanctuary in between the resort and the bay. This means there are tons of opportunities in the am to capture great shots of birds found only on the island. Plumeria and the 7000 end of Banana condos would offer you the best shots from your lanai. You can fill 10 photo albums with flower shots- every inch of the resort (horizontal and vertical- love the orchids grafted on the trees!) is beautifully landscaped with a large variety of tropical flora.

There is a steep paved path to Pu'u Poa beach, below the resort. Easily walkable (approx 5-10 min?) if you are in decent shape, or use the resort transportation. Beautiful walk/drive through a dense tropical jungle. Phone/bench located at the beach end of the path so that you may phone up for a ride when you are ready to leave. It's usually about a 5-10 minute wait. Bring bug spray if you go down to the beach for sunset and plan on using the golf-cart for your return- the bugs are out in full force at the bottom of that path once night falls.

The resort is under construction (restaurant and lobby fire years ago). Yes the construction seemingly has gone on forever. Because of this, there is not a restaurant on-site. Disappointing to see so many reviews griping about the noise and lack of restaurant. If you've done your research and you are aware of this fact, then please plan accordingly. A) There are other choices for a place to lay your head or B) Enjoy the grill, your kitchen, and the multitude of restaurants in the area. Enjoy all the island has to offer during the day, when construction is at it's peak. You can enjoy serenity at the pool or your lanai in the mornings and evenings.

The resort is a fantastic value in the heart of Kauai's beauty. Enjoy!!

Room Tip: First floor condos offer the advantage of no stairs. Second and third floor condos offer better vie...
