“Exquisite views with beautiful pool/beach combo”
Reviewed March 18, 2014

The St. Regis Princeville is situated in a breathtakingly beautiful site on Kauii. This could be the most gorgeous hotel site in the State.

The pool area is exquisite with wonderful luncheon dining along side it, serving top notch food with timely service. The pool area is steps from the beach.

The views from the beach are glorious but the beach itself is on the small side and the sand is not soft to walk on--many ground up shells, perhaps. Also we had been told, and this is correct, that the swimming is not great at the beach. There are a great many rocks as you enter the water and you have to get fairly far out before you wade past them.

The staff is very friendly and helpful and the food at the Makana restaurant is delicious. However the Kauai Grill, a Jean Georges Vongerichten restaurant, was most disappointing. The decor is ordinary and so is the food. Although the menu is similar to his NY locations, the result that is served is not up to the quality of his other restaurants.

The rooms are lovely and large. We were upgraded to a Monarch suite which was superb.

I recommend staying here highly, especially if you want to be on the more scenic side of the island.

Have always wanted to experience the St. Regis Princeville Resort and finally had an opportunity for a 2-night stay in a Monarch Suite with terrace, and was not disappointed.

PROS:
- fabulous view from the room with sliding glass doors out to a lanai. Hint: the best view is free from the balcony beyond the 9th floor bar/lounge.
- best hotel bathroom ever: large tub by the window; double sinks, plenty of towels
- butler service that spoils you: restaurant recommendations and reservations, suggestions for day trips, morning coffee service in your room, advance notice to valets to fetch your car, etc. Actually, service throughout the property from valet to beach was excellent.
- breakfast buffet at the Makana Terrace with great views of Hanalei Bay and Bali Hai mountain was the highlight of every day. Warning: Sunday breakfast buffet ends at 10:00 instead of 11:00. Dinner at the Kauai Grill was not memorable, i.e., delicious, but can't remember what we ate.
- view from within the pool just as beautiful as in the advertisements
- we were going to only splurge on a deluxe ocean view room, but the very competent St. Regis reservation person (Venessa) alerted me to the availability of 1904 Legacy Rates for Suites which basically lets you stay 2 nights for the price of 1 (plus $4) which was cheaper than the original plan.

CONS: for balance in this review
- there was a dirty spot on the living room carpet about the size of a quarter which was immediately noticed by my sharp-eyed wife who usually catches these types of imperfections.
- there was no awning over the lanai so we couldn't make much use of it in the sun and rain; there was a patio umbrella, but it wasn't set up and the chairs still got wet from the overnight rain.

OTHER:
- Suggested activity: an island helicopter tour with Sunshine Helicopters out of the nearby Princeville Airport is well worth it. Also worthwhile is paying the extra $50 for the DVD of your actual flight, because the photos taken as a passenger will mostly likely contain your reflection in them. Paying extra to sit in the front (First Class) was also worth it. In hind sight, the early morning flights have a strong sun that ruin photos shot into it, and cast dark shadows on the landscape; probably the same problem for late afternoon flights.
- Suggested activity: take an early morning drive to Ke'e Beach (the end of the road - Kuhio Hwy) in the morning for scenic views and an uncrowded road, then return to the St. Regis for its buffet breakfast at the Makana Terrace.
- CAUTION: Hawaii does not observe Daylight Savings Time, so if you are there on the day everyone else jumps ahead (second Sunday in March) and you do the same, you will be an hour early for all events as we were. Trust your smartphone.

Room Tip: When making reservations, avoid doing it on the website, but call the reservation service and speak...

The St. R Priceville is a great property for kids. We recently visited with our two year old and she was treated incredibly well by the staff. from a welcome basket of toys to free pickings at the breakfast buffet. Each room has a mini-fridge so storing snacks and milk for her was a breeze. All the pools are great but a small kids pool gave her room to roam safely. Would definitely go back.

This St Regis is not up to their usual standards.
It is in need of a major renovation, their employees need to have attitude adjustments.
Prices for food in the restaurants are over priced and service poor
Your better buying a sandwich and sitting on a beach somewhere then throwing your money on this dump

This is our second visit to this fantastic resort (most of our trips to Kauai have been to the Grand Hyatt in the south) and here are some things to consider when choosing the St Regis:

1. It's expensive. If paying $16 for a drink, $70 for lunch for two at the pool, or $30 per day to park your car ruins your experience, don't come.
2. The service is superb. I'd give it 6 stars if I could. Every employee was as open, friendly, and helpful as the next.
3. The view from the Makana Terrace restaurant at breakfast is unbelievable. Come early and watch the surfers and the changing colors on the mountains across Hanalei bay as the sun rises.
4. Aside from the Makana Terrace and the porch off the bar, the common areas of this hotel are enclosed although with lots of windows. For a breezy, open air experience with a large courtyard filled with tropical plants, parrots, and Hawaiian music, choose the Grand Hyatt.
5. The bar is great- think colonial elegance. The live music is jazzy rather than Hawaiian.
6. The pool is very good (with great service, see #2) but the Grand Hyatt has the best pool on Kauai.
7. The beach is nice with OK swimming but also surfing, kayaking, and paddle boarding.
8. It can be rainy on the north side of Kauai (although our week was perfect).
9. While it's a great honeymoon spot, it skews older than the Grand Hyatt, more multigenerational families than parents with toddlers (see #1).
10.The on-property restaurants are very nice (and expensive, see #1). Come early for dinner to Makana Terrace (very good sushi, closed Tuesday and Wednesday) or Kauai Grill (sophisticated) to watch the sun set.
11. The choices for offsite restaurants are limited. It's a windy dark road to Hanalei town where there are a few nice restaurants (The Dolphin and Postcards do not take reservations). We prefer the restaurants on the south side of Kauai- Merrimans, Joslyns, and Roys.
12. The fitness rooms (there are 2) are good, with standard machines with individual TVs and free weights. They were mostly empty on our visits (see #9). The fitness room at the Hyatt was often pretty full.
13. We did not use the spa (see #1).
14. It's a longer drive to Princeville (than, e.g., to Poipu) from the airport after a long day of travel.

We love both the Hyatt and the St. Regis. Our solution is to split our time between the two properties, starting in Poipu (see #11 and 14) and ending in Princeville (see #2 and 3) when we visit Kauai.

Wow. The view here is incredible. We were lucky and had an upgrade to a suite. We never tired of waking up to the view of the Napali coast from our bed. A special treat, the shower had the same amazing view.

Other pros
- great location to explore the north. Close to haneli bay and kapaa which were our favorite towns.
- beautiful pool and beach
- suite came with coffee and delicious chocolate macadamia biscottis each morning. The butler service was also quite nice as they unpacked for us.
- excellent service
- Pilates and yoga on the beach each morning

Cons
- mandatory $30 valet
-expensive restaurants but we liked exploring the towns and didnt eat there at all.

We stayed at this resort for 5 nights and I must say st Regis staff made our trip very special. On arrival we were greeted. They upgraded our room to the ocean view. It was our 7th anniversary they had complimentary champagne waiting for us in our room on arrival with a hand written note. Food was amazing!! We loved every bit of our trip. Highly recommended. View is breathtaking. Staff is very friendly. 5 star from us!!!!

Room Tip: Highly recommend ocean view
