St. Regis Princeville Resort
Ranked #3 of 4 Hotels in Princeville
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed May 2, 2013

The St. Regis Princeville is one of the most amazing locations on the face of the earth. The views from the property are incredible to behold. The multiple shades of blue that make up the bay, with the backdrop of the mountains and waterfalls have everything that I could imagine. My wife and I discussed how we literally could not think of anything else that we could add to improve the scenic arrangement that greeted us each morning.

The grounds to the hotel were well maintained, lush, and plentiful. The only exception to this were the ledges immediately outside the windows of the room. We spent five nights at the property, and it was not until the second-to-last day that I even looked back at the hotel itself. By this point I had seen enough of the sun for a little while, so I moved my lunch chair into the shade and had to look towards the hotel. The building itself is not spectacular on the outside, and it frankly looks like it could use some type of facelift to match the warmth of dark woods and views that you find on the inside.

I would definitely recommend staying at this hotel for at least a couple of days. We have been to many places around the world, and you just cannot find a better view. Our room was on the third floor, which we actually preferred, as the higher rooms looked over some trees and into the bay where you could see buildings and cars…in other words, signs of life outside of the resort. From the third floor, all of this was blocked from our view. That vantage point gave the illusion that we were the only property on the island.

There are tons of nearby activities: surfing in the sandy Hanalei Bay, kayaking up the nearby river, hiking to Queen’s Bath, or relaxing at numerous spots in the town of Hanalei itself.

We absolutely hated to end our stay, but I do have to mention that one aspect that was very frustrating was the service. Although everyone was exceptionally friendly and willing to help, the staff was spread way too thin. It took a minimum of 15-20 minutes to place an order by the pool or beach every time. One gentlemen actually got up from a cabana and walked up to the restaurant to eat because he got sick of waiting for someone to come by. Regarding the food itself, we were a bit disappointed. The lettuce in the salads was often wilted and browning at the edges, and my wife received what I would call “medium rare” chicken that had to go back one day. Also, the prices for items are not the same throughout the hotel. A bottle of soda is $2.59 in one of the shops, while $6 at the poolside restaurant for a fountain version. The exact same sunscreen at the pool is 40% higher than in the sundry store inside.

The room was very comfortable, and the shower had a great feature of a window that you could switch from clear to opaque. If you are coffee addicts, then you will have to negotiate who goes first, as the in-room coffee maker only does one cup at a time. The WiFi seemed to be quite sporadic, as well as the cell phone coverage, even though I appeared to have a good signal on my phone.

We had a wonderful week here, and we would definitely come again. The food quality and service levels need some improvement, but the view creates our memories, and this view is unbeatable!

Room Tip: As I mentioned in my review, we preferred the 3rd floor because it hid the presence of human life fr...

The St. Regis Princeville was just moved up to a category 7 Starwood property (the highest category), and, having just spent five nights there, this change strikes me as a slight to the other category 7 properties. The St. Regis has spectacular views -- no doubt about it -- but is mediocre in every other regard. The room -- and especially the bathroom -- were dated. The shower had very little water pressure, and, like many reviewers have mentioned, there was paint peeling from the ceiling. Our room had one of those long trails of hundreds of ants stretching from the bureau to the desk; housekeeping took care of the issue as best they could as soon as we called, but their solutions were temporary fixes and the ants were back within hours.

The staff is probably top-notch but some people's standards, but I found them to be too engaging and friendly for their own good. My wife and I felt that we couldn't leave the room without small bills, because everyone -- and I mean everyone -- was hungry for tips. You want to retrieve your car from the mandatory $30/day valet? Well, then you'll have to answer a host of questions from a bubbly valet guy. Want a towel by the pool? Then you'll have to endure a 5-minute speech about the hours of the pool bar and all sorts of other things you already know (because you were told them the first time you wanted a towel). Everyone just seems SO eager to please that it's intolerable, frankly.

This is our second time staying at the St. Regis. We usually rotate between the Four Season on Maui and the St. Regis annually. This was our first time traveling with a child, she just turned one. We found the staff and hotel to be amazingly accommodating. We were brought a mini fridge, microwave and crib to our room. We were also given a little baby welcome package full of travel sized toiletries and a baby menu which was amazing. One of the best perks. The staff was more than accommodating at the pool bringing out a pack and play and moving umbrellas to shade our little one. There was a guy named Rocky working the pool and he is one of your BEST employees. He was amazing! The amount of kids activities on the premises is outstanding. We would never stay anywhere else on Kauai.

We have been to the St.Regis 5 times in the past 3 years, so you can tell we love it. The views from the rooms are incredible. Service is excellent. nothing is too much trouble for the staff, and everyone is really polite. We always stay in a prince junior suite a bit expensive but it's nice to splurge. The time before we were up graded to the presidential suite ( the movie The Decendants was filmed in there ) so it was really fun being the "George Clooney" room. Will never forget it. We will be back sad to leave. Sunday brunch is also good a bit pricey but expected at a place like this. We also went to Kauai Grill there another great place to eat. Go before sunset and get a window seat. Lovely views of the bay. I miss the place already !

Enjoying sunset at the St. Regis has become a tradition, and an experience that first timers to Princeville must not miss. Arrive early for a seat on the balcony, or at one of a handful of window seats at the bar, to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a drink or two. A half hour before sunset the bar manager takes great pleasure in opening a bottle of champagne on the viewndeck with a saber to the delight and applause of the crowd. The bar wait staff are excellent sports and great photographers, and will gladly take your photo with the sunset in the background. Don't miss the experience.

My buddies and I literally stumbled into the St Regis impromptu very (very) late one night in April 2013 and we needed a place to sleep and eat. Andrew England, St Regis Manager, set us up perfectly and made us feel welcome. I'll never forget waking up, opening the curtains, and seeing that view across Hanalei Bay...

Highlights: View, pool, grounds, interior, staff (all of them!), excellent service!!!
Rants: Frozen burger patties used for room service cheeseburgers; small room for the price
